The religious dimensions of January 6 were almost entirely overlooked by the J6 report and have been under-covered by the mainstream press. This piece makes a strong case for seeing Christian Nationalism as a crucial dimension of the insurrection. And importantly, that religious movement has not waned or changed course in any significant way since it led the "spiritual warfare" at the US Capitol two years ago. https://religiondispatches.org/evidence-strongly-suggests-trump-was-collaborating-with-christian-nationalist-leaders-before-january-6th/
Evidence Strongly Suggests Trump Was Collaborating with Christian Nationalist Leaders Before January 6th

On December 22, the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th Capitol Riot released its report, reopening the question of what forces and figures incited the insurrection as we observe its two-year anniversary. Yet, as numerous observers have noticed, the Committee neglected (or, indeed,

@sethcotlar I followed the House elections this past week, and often heard the long and bizarre prayers that were crafted before every session opened. Sounded pretty partisan to me, calling people to a holy war.
@sethcotlar that's crazy. it's not like we've ever seen nationalist Christian "socialists" before...
@sethcotlar Ttump Jr. Just started selling "patriotic" bibles. It's all connected and very scary.
@sethcotlar My guess is that was deliberate. The committee chose to focus on the conduct of Donald Trump and his alleged co-conspirators.
@AlgoCompSynth @sethcotlar these Christian nationalist pastors are also coconspirators. They're out there giving religious cover for a lot of this nonsense. Knowing people from years ago who have drifted into this stuff, I can say it seems to be a lot more mainstream than most of us outside imagine.
@philtor @sethcotlar Oh, I don't doubt that. I just think it's a mistake for a House or Senate committee to *directly* investigate a religious / quasi-religious entity instead of individuals, especially given the current Supreme Court.
@sethcotlar At the end of the day we will learn that the J6th report was as far reaching and as comprehensive as the Warren Commission.
@sethcotlar The moment in ancient history when some guy realized organized religion could be profitable and acted on it, the entire world was screwed.

@sethcotlar

Christian nationalism absolutely had a role in J6. Getting Trump back in office is what the nutjobs think they need to continue pushing their twisted, extremist religious views on the rest of us.

@sethcotlar Religion breeds extremism. Extremism breeds war. History is full of examples
@sethcotlar Genuine question from across the Atlantic. Why havent the lot of them been fatal injectioned? I mean you have the death penalty. I would have thought storming congress to overthrow the election would be *The* reason the death penalty would be on the books.
@sethcotlar you would have to be pretty religious to believe the absolute tripe that the maga-qanon headbangers & libertarian free thinking bellends rattle out, only blind faith could explain why people still believe, follow & trust these moronic criminals.

@sethcotlar Religious dimensions pervaded the radicalization of Muslims around the world. It has shocked Christians and sowed fear.

People never learn. Politicians will use anything to further their positions of greed.

@sethcotlar
And it isn't going away.

The Family is worth watching for a cautionary tale of power and religion.

@sethcotlar Believing in something you can't prove, be it election rigging or a deity. That's the problem.
@sethcotlar whatโ€™s the friggin point about Jesusโ€™ false prophet stuff if theyโ€™re gonna worship a charlatan bankrupt of cash morals and decency
@sethcotlar An incredible article. Thank you for bringing this to the surface.
@sethcotlar it's pretty clear that Christian Nationalists and right wing Christians believe that Christian beliefs should be baked in to government and the basis for law. In Australia, we have this as well. Christians vying for control of government who have no problem with democracy as long as it's Christian principles you are voting for. RW Christians will ride Trump into power then use him as a puppet to institute Christian theology in legislation
@sethcotlar TIL that the January 6th insurrection was courtesy of the #AmericanTaliban.
