James M.@rbreich what exactly is "fiscal conservatism"? It certainly is not fiscal responsibility. As far as I can tell, it's merely (fiscally irresponsible) tax cuts for the wealthy, and service cuts for the poor.
Geoffdaddy@jamesmarshall @rbreich yeah, I agree. I think mostly what people think of when they head fiscal conservatism is fiscal responsibility, and being responsibly fiscally is an admirable goal. However as you note the GOP has done a stunningly bad job of that.

It's a distinction without a difference. There is no Moderate Republican. There are only different flavors of crazytown.
Local blacksmith@LadyDragonfly @rbreich easy there please. There are plenty of normal conservative Republicans and that rhetoric is what will prosecute the Democrats. To make things sane you need to treat opponents with a certain respect for conversation. Goals may be the same if means are different. Blanketing a whole group is counterproductive.

@AprilShowers99452871 @rbreich I imagine the Democrats might have been willing to support a moderate, but the GOP has shown time after time that they're unwilling to work with Democrats even a little. The ball is in the GOP's court to be bipartisan. Every single House Republican consciously decided to join with the crazy fascists rather than reach across the aisle.

@rbreich so, let's just call them what they have become - the fascist party. Whether the current centrist members of the GOP (who just two decades would have been far-right wingers) want to admit it or not, they have ceded their party to fascist authoritarians. And they probably can't even see it... Or simply refuse to do so.

@rbreich I'm a cradle Republican. My party today is not the one I joined at 18 in 1973. I quit being a precinct committeeman & state delegate years ago because of the takeover by the non compromising people. My experience tells me Speaker McCarthy is, at best, steering a runaway vehicle with no brakes and shakey steering.

Nicholas Weaver@rbreich There haven't been fiscal conservative Republicans since George H. W. Bush. I'd call them the "fiscal kleptocrat Republicans" since their goal is to cut taxes on the rich at the expense of everything else.
