The 3 parts of the GOP โ€” the fiscal conservatives, the cultural warriors, and the MAGA anti-democracy Trumpers โ€” have come together behind fiscal conservatism, draped in warrior language, with the potential for a MAGA anti-democracy outcome. They are as dangerous as ever.
@rbreich what exactly is "fiscal conservatism"? It certainly is not fiscal responsibility. As far as I can tell, it's merely (fiscally irresponsible) tax cuts for the wealthy, and service cuts for the poor.
@jamesmarshall @rbreich yeah, I agree. I think mostly what people think of when they head fiscal conservatism is fiscal responsibility, and being responsibly fiscally is an admirable goal. However as you note the GOP has done a stunningly bad job of that.
@rbreich if you think there's any distinction between MAGA terrorists who follow Q conspiracies and MAGA terrorists who don't, you're fooling yourself, and anyone else who listens. It's a distinction without a difference. There is no Moderate Republican. There are only different flavors of crazytown.
@LadyDragonfly @rbreich easy there please. There are plenty of normal conservative Republicans and that rhetoric is what will prosecute the Democrats. To make things sane you need to treat opponents with a certain respect for conversation. Goals may be the same if means are different. Blanketing a whole group is counterproductive.
@Blcksmth @rbreich "prosecute the Democrats"
๐Ÿ˜† Buddy I don't know what point you think you're making but you just made mine for me.
@LadyDragonfly @rbreich ?? Sorry, that's not a coherent statement. Saying that everybody on the other side is evil is not a great place to start from. I don't think that's where you should want to be. But that's up to you.
@Blcksmth @rbreich if you think I give two shits whether I hurt a fascist's widdle fee fees, I've got a bridge in California to sell you.
@rbreich whatโ€™s the prediction of the next few months to come for House GOP? Lauren Boebert tweeted โ€œIf yโ€™all thought that was good, just wait till we take the fight to Joe Biden and the radical left!โ€ ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

@rbreich they are fascists. They are anti-government obstructionists. They are hateful bigots. Many are insurrectionary accelerationists.

But you knew that. I said it for the others who might not.

@rbreich
And Dems didnโ€™t support a moderate Republican to get things done either.
@AprilShowers99452871 @rbreich I imagine the Democrats might have been willing to support a moderate, but the GOP has shown time after time that they're unwilling to work with Democrats even a little. The ball is in the GOP's court to be bipartisan. Every single House Republican consciously decided to join with the crazy fascists rather than reach across the aisle.
@rbreich Rampant fascism. No need to mince words here.
@rbreich Perhaps its better to "do unto they before they do unto us"?
@rbreich so, let's just call them what they have become - the fascist party. Whether the current centrist members of the GOP (who just two decades would have been far-right wingers) want to admit it or not, they have ceded their party to fascist authoritarians. And they probably can't even see it... Or simply refuse to do so.
@rbreich this is why the Dems should have cut off the head of the insurrectionist snakes by voting for McCarthy on the 2nd ballot.
@daphsci @rbreich only problem being that he is also an insurrectionist. There was no one nominated in all the rounds, other than Jeffries, who was not an insurrectionist.
@rbreich I'm a cradle Republican. My party today is not the one I joined at 18 in 1973. I quit being a precinct committeeman & state delegate years ago because of the takeover by the non compromising people. My experience tells me Speaker McCarthy is, at best, steering a runaway vehicle with no brakes and shakey steering.
@rbreich is there no way to stop their desire for a theocracy?
@rbreich ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ
@rbreich Fiscal conservatism is refusing to water your plants. They die, your constituents die and youโ€™ve created a desert.
@rbreich There haven't been fiscal conservative Republicans since George H. W. Bush. I'd call them the "fiscal kleptocrat Republicans" since their goal is to cut taxes on the rich at the expense of everything else.
@rbreich Theyโ€™re not fiscal conservatives, Mr. Reich. Theyโ€™re fiscal terrorists.
