So tired of people not knowing what clickbait is and accusing every title or phrase of being clickbait.

Hey, you don’t like the title? Cool. You don’t like what the title talks about? Sure. You don’t like that titles have to be short? I can dig that.

But unless the title is a gross misrepresentation of reality, or the content of what you’re going to watch or listen, it IS NOT CLICKBAIT.

@thelinuxEXP Going forward, just title all of your videos "I literally died to make this video for you."

If people are going to complain about clickbait, then double down. 😉

@KuJoe Hahaha yeah, I guess just being catchy gets you as much criticism as making your titles so cryptic they don’t mean anything 😂
@KuJoe @thelinuxEXP another title could be: "This is my last video on YouTube"
@skyglobe @thelinuxEXP followed by "This is my last video on YouTuber Part 2", then part 3, part 4, and so on.
@KuJoe @skyglobe And then a public apology to apologize for the clickbait! The content writes itself!
@skyglobe @KuJoe @thelinuxEXP Yeah. And when I see a title like that I unsubscribe, if they do not intend to quit. Only happened to me once, though...

@thelinuxEXP "the title made me click it. Therefore it's clickbait!!!"

Folks seem to lump any title that is enticing them as clickbait. When in the end it's just marketing, not a flat out lie or misrepresentation of the video. The definition of clickbait has really shifted over the years. Ugh :(

@ThatGeekZen Yeah, and sure it’s all clickbait: it’s designed to get you to click and watch the stuff.

Why it became a negative thing, I don’t know.

@thelinuxEXP The meaning of clickbait is often misunderstood. Clickbait can be good. Something like a title that doesn't give a lot of information to make someone curious without giving any false information is an example of good clickbait.
@thelinuxEXP whoa whoa whats with the clickbait paragraphs… 😝🤪
You don’t have clickbait titles man, don’t let those idiots distract you with their nonsense 🥳
@thelinuxEXP every time I’ve been accused of it the result is they simply don’t agree with the point and shout clickbait
@gamingonlinux It’s generally just that, yeah
@thelinuxEXP @gamingonlinux keep on doing what you guys are doing, ignore them.
@gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP Literally every time you talk about CoC's I see people shouting this.

@thelinuxEXP

But why didn't you use a CW as a clickbait here, I wonder ?! 🤔

Can't be worse than the movies' teasers though 😂

@thelinuxEXP well unless you have your own definition then no it doesn't have to be a gross misrepresentation. the definition is simply, "content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page." so a great many title formats, phraseology, styles, grammar, linguistics etc could fit that definition.
@thelinuxEXP if you can say that a title is doing something besides encouraging a click, then you can see it's not clickbait. but in this capitalist economy don't you think clickbait titles are actually what people are incentivized to use? why then would it upset you if someone says to you that a title encourage clicks as it's main purpose?
@thelinuxEXP
the middlefinger is made for situations like the...
you are allways on top on my list...uuuu can ring my bell...:)
@thelinuxEXP literally the point of the title is to grab attention. This means if you are making a good title, it will inherently be "clickbait". Clickbait isn't inherently bad, but bad clickbait does exist. Too many people throw around clickbait with no clue what they are talking about.
@thelinuxEXP Wait a second, that doesn't look like the Twitter sync I am used to! Welcome!
@gamey Oh it’s been a while since I moved to Mastodon entirely!
@thelinuxEXP I am not especially active on social media but it's nice to see you here! :)
@thelinuxEXP  just title all your videos "clickbait", solves the issue

@thelinuxEXP

Preach!

Kids these days must’ve forgotten the pre-adpocalypse YouTube.
Classic example — thumbnail has a girl in a bikini with a shocked face, a big red arrow is pointing at something pixelated, and the title says „SHE DID WHAT???“. The video has no girls (or bikinis) and the topic is only tangentially related to the title.

If a video has an enticing thumbnail and a good title, AND also includes what the thumbnail and title said it would, that’s not clickbait. That’s good SMM.

@notthebee Yep. Before there were any rules for monetization, YouTube always WAY worse.

@notthebee @thelinuxEXP

This is a really good video from vertasium about the topic of clickbait which is even hard to define:

Clickbait is Unreasonably Effective

YouTube
@thelinuxEXP I like Linus‘ distinction between „click bait“ and „click enticing“ and that’s the difference: Lying about the content of your videos vs. creating tension that pushes you over the edge and makes you click.
@hiiaminfi Yeah, exactly! And sure, Linus sometimes has super cryptic titles that only bear a passing resemblance to what happens in the video, but it’s never a complete lismatch or lie
@thelinuxEXP Yea I mean the man is a master at his game. But what’s maybe even more important than if the title is 100% representative of the content is if the video can hold up to the expectations the title set. And usually LMG delivers.
@thelinuxEXP
you think people call articles clickbait for no reason?, you are severly delusional, take your meds.

@0 I’m not talking about articles but videos, specifically mine.

I’m not saying all things people call clickbait are not clickbait. I’m saying people need to stop calling EVERYTHING clickbait.

Stay polite and watch your tone, friend. This isn’t Twitter.

@thelinuxEXP
yes exactly this isn't twitter so I will say whatever I want, sorry bozo
@0 Wow what a pleasant person. So glad to have talked to you, now naff off and go troll someone else.
@thelinuxEXP just because I don't restrict myself when speaking means I am a troll ? wow, very interesting. Please elaborate on that, I think you are forgetting why mastadon exists in the first place.

@0 Dude, you came in, completely misunderstood something gens of other people had no trouble understanding, then replied in a nicely insulting manner and you wonder why people aren’t nice to you?

Yea, that makes you the very definition of a troll. Mastodon doesn’t exist to save your biased image of free speech.

@thelinuxEXP I don't care if you are nice to me or not. You can call me whatever you want. I fight for free speech and the ability to say anything. Please re think why the mastadon platform exists and the ability to self host your own servers.

@0 Well you might not care, but if you come in and start insulting me, I’m going to block or mute you. You wouldn’t do that to a stranger in the street (at least not if you’re a sane human being), no reason to do it to another stranger on the internet, or you’re getting the same reaction you would’ve gotten IRL.

Mastodon wasn’t created for free speech it was created to have a social platform not controlled by a big company ;)

@thelinuxEXP Exactly, I am not controlled by any big company, I am not on the mastadon.social instance as you might have (NOT) noticed. Therefore I am still going to promote free speech when possible, and in return say whatever is on my mind freely.
@0 Then don’t get annoyed if people mute or block you, or your entire instance. Free speech doesn’t come with freedom of consequence, it’s a double edged sword.
@thelinuxEXP That's perfectly fine with me.

@thelinuxEXP as you just said "this isn't twitter"
mastodon is a place where everyone is welcome to say whatever they want, it's an open world. If you're gonna be insulted because of what people say I'd advice going to twitter. Twitter has this report button. Here we go to say what you want. The rules you might follow on your instance isn't the rules others have. It's something we call a decentralized network :)

I love mastodon cause we can actually say what we want, not what guidelines say

@sisa Sure, and I’m also free to call that person on his douchy behavior and tell him whatever I want. Which is exactly what I did, so it’s kinda funny to tell me ne thing but not apply it to everyone 😏
Free speech goes both ways: you say what you want, but you also deal with the consequences.
@thelinuxEXP
Does indeed go both ways. Just saying mastodon is the last place to expect people to be polite as people can say whatever they want. So i disagree with the be polite this isn't twitter. How i see it that's what makes it less
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@thelinuxEXP Some people react to the title without stopping to evaluate the content, on a crowded platform like YouTube, not making a catchy title is not an option for those who do it professionally.
Keep up the good work. 🖖
@eddiecsilva Yeah, if you say “I review this XYZ laptop”, or “this laptop surprised me: XYZ review”, you’re definitely not getting the same number of clicks…
@eddiecsilva
O meu maior problema com oa titulos é que ás vezes parece meio clickbait
@thelinuxEXP

@tbss @eddiecsilva It never is clickbait though, on my channel. Not in the sense that the contents of the video don’t match the title: you always get exactly what the title says.

Now if we use clickbait to say « it’s voluntarily a bit mysterious to incite a click », then yes, of course it is, it’s YouTube, if you don’t do it, might as well not publish a video at all.

@thelinuxEXP
Sim, no diolinux labs,as noticias só colocam o ponto mais importabte das noticias do dia ou da semana, mas ás vezes os outros são tão ou mais importantes na minha opinião
@eddiecsilva

@tbss @eddiecsilva Ah yeah, it can be tough to write news titles. I try to put 3 in each one, but sometimes that’s too long, and it might also make the video less « clickable » rather than having just one big item.

I know Linus Tech Tips does it this way as well, just 1 big item per news video in the title.

@thelinuxEXP
Stop putting titles on your videos... Render-45664.mp4 is a valid title!
See how they like it
@Normand_Nadon More like video-v13-finalforrealthistime
@thelinuxEXP you forgot the _05 at the end
@thelinuxEXP "you won't believe what this widget does" doesn't fit either of your categories but is very much click bait
