So, a "PR" person, who was given some files she does not understand by an ex-twitter employee and has been "revealing" them (misleadingly) is now freaking out that that someone from the State Dept visited her public website, claiming that the gov't is trying to intimidate her. By... visiting her public website after she claimed to be releasing things. And she's asking Elon why it's happening. It's very, very silly and confused people all around.

Lol. Kristen found this post and claims it's "false" with no explanation of *what's* false. And now a bunch of people on Twitter are claiming that I am a "warmonger-oligarchy shill" which is pretty amazing given my history.

Twitter has become a site for idiots being idiots and nothing more.

@mmasnick Don't forget the nazis! Idiots, nazis, idiots being idiots, nazis being nazis, nazi idiots being idiot nazis, etc. It's a rich tapestry. Of idiocy and nazis.
@chriscaple @mmasnick And anti-vaxxers! They’re also running rampant on the bird site now.
@stopthatgirl7 They fit neatly in the idiots category though. Also they're not infrequently nazis.
@chriscaple They do deserve a separate mention because they’ve gotten so, so, SO very vocal as of late because of Damar Hamlin’s collapse. It’s like every kind of woodwork they could have been in, they came screaming out of.
@stopthatgirl7 They're a very special kind of idiot, to be sure.
@mmasnick
Just reply back to her ambiguous "False" with an ambiguous "False" your own and see how it goes. Haha

@mmasnick Or is the reply saying the claims being made by @[email protected] are "false", and the screenshot is being used as "evidence"?

To be honest, I started adding `twitter.com` to my browser's scripting blacklist when Elon-gate started -- I don't want that #toxicsocial nonsense running in my browser sessions.

@mmasnick The silliness of it all boggles the mind.
@mmasnick She seriously subscribes to email alerts for every visitor to their site? Now? ROFL. 🤣👍
@wurstsemmel yeah, i was trying to figure that out. It *can't* be EVERY visitor, can it?
@mmasnick I would assume this is primarily about visitor network resolution, so she may get an alert per institution/ISP/company that visits. Anything else would be too stupid to be real.
@wurstsemmel @mmasnick yeah my SaaS startup used to get these for prospective clients - when IPs from govt or Fortune 500 visited etc. so you could then decide whether to send them a note about your services…
@mmasnick Why are you trying to intimidate me by reading this?? 🙃
@mmasnick
Is that even a normal looking report? Wouldn't it show an ip visited her site? I'm not super familiar with website visit reporting
@PhilGastwirth @mmasnick It's doing a reverse DNS lookup to see where the computer was that visited the site. She's stupid.
@TheChrisGlass @PhilGastwirth @mmasnick
Are they confused, or are they projecting confusion to confuse others? Lying has a social function

@RnDanger @PhilGastwirth @mmasnick She's a paranoid moron that turned on 'security features' she doesn't understand. Interestingly none of the quote tweets or replies are even attempting to explain what it means.

It literally means someone on a computer at that company accessed the website. That's literally it.

I just ran it on my domain. Oh no! THE GERMANS ARE SPYING ON ME BY ACCESSING MY WEBSITE!

@TheChrisGlass
No I understand it saying a map location or ip address. But I'm just surprised it flat out says "state department". I mean I guess that ip or dns could be publically known.
@RnDanger @mmasnick

@PhilGastwirth @RnDanger @mmasnick Yup. All that IP stuff is publicly available. Granted, you can obscure it with a VPN, but it's something 99.999% of people should never care about.

And it's disappointing someone that's head of PR, or whatever her title is, is just pushing dangerous lies without any pushback.

@TheChrisGlass
Well yeah of course she is. I guess I would think government ip would be obscured
@RnDanger @mmasnick
@PhilGastwirth @TheChrisGlass @RnDanger @mmasnick As an IT person in the public sector: we don't do sneaky spy stuff. We don't want to give the impression we do sneaky spy stuff. And if we have a computer on our network with a virus on it we haven't detected, we want to be able to receive notifications from outside parties that have detected activity from our IP addresses. All that requires not obscuring IP addresses.
AS6966 U.S. Department of State details - IPinfo.io

AS6966 autonomous system information: WHOIS details, hosted domains, peers, upstreams, downstreams, and more

@TheChrisGlass @RnDanger @PhilGastwirth @mmasnick Exactly. Years ago on my blog, looked up people visiting out of curiosity. Some were from government sites. As I had blogged about 9/11 and after, didn’t think it was nefarious just someone that worked at those agencies. They might have been curious about what I wrote, why I supported W or they might have come for the #Cats

Some people are clueless. Lots of those at the #Birdsite

@strong_sue @RnDanger @PhilGastwirth @mmasnick But it's not just being clueless, it's instantly thinking of the most "I am the main character in this world" pattern of thought where every conspiracy is about you. All the replies to her support her idea that she's being tracked and INTIMIDATED. No amount of explanation will ever fix that.
@TheChrisGlass @PhilGastwirth @mmasnick I used to work for the government and sometimes I used to visit websites on my work computer. Not for any nefarious reasons but because I am a person who uses the Internet.

@mmasnick I’ve been seeing this one it’s surreal. She got it from an employee leak though not him, it’s been mostly keywords/dictionaries for some abuse ML product.

On the other front though, yeah, I would have thought a PR person would understand what leadgen analytics products do…we have used these at every startup I’ve done…the paranoia is off the charts.

@Noupside @mmasnick at first i was surprised and confused that a guy who owns a company that makes rocketships and another that makes electric cars would know so little about technology

then i watched glass onion.

@Noupside @mmasnick She's well versed in creating narratives, full stop.

@Noupside @mmasnick She's not paranoid, she's selling conspiracy.

She knows what's going on, but she can cover it in scary words and implications and sell it to the rubes.

@mmasnick The Qorons (QElonons?) are a fragile species that, if disturbed, spray feces in random patterns in hopes of frightening predators. And auditors.
@mmasnick I'm not sure exactly how a reverse DNS lookup is "#AI", or why it would be "creepy" for Twitter to use natural language processing as part of automated moderation. Unless maybe she thinks it's the other kind of NLP?

@asherlangton @mmasnick

"AI" — artificial idiocy

@Spicewalla @asherlangton @mmasnick that's a scurrilous lie!! The idiocy is ALL that's real over there. And it's organic. 😈
@mmasnick At least she's honest.

@asherlangton @mmasnick

Perhaps she isn't used to people visiting her website.

@That_AC @asherlangton @mmasnick
I can sympathize with that. Hoo, boy, can I. :)
The video of Sharyl Attkisson getting "hacked" actually just shows a stuck delete key

Vox
@LizardSF @asherlangton that reminds me, Sharyl promised to sue me a few years ago and it never happened.
@asherlangton @mmasnick y'know... databases about people are generally creepy. that pretty much includes the internet. it's a creepy place.

@asherlangton @mmasnick I think there should be a ML powered app that prevents people from saying dumbass things on the internet.

Bonus points if you can get the rights to HAL9000 saying, “I’m afraid I can’t do that, $NAME”

@asherlangton @mmasnick it's ai because she was told it was ai by the salesperson?

@mmasnick "How did they find it? I put nofollow, noindex in robots.txt"

@mmasnick

Has anyone checked her FB for her post about how a swarthy man looked at her in a Target and she totally knew he was going to sex traffic her?

@mmasnick "Hi, it's me. The social media expert who has no understanding of how visiting a website works!" 😅

@mmasnick
The thing about Musk and guys like him is their pathologies are contagious. I mean that literally.

You can't stay in their orbit for very long without taking on some degree of their paranoia and persecution complex. I've been there. The cognitive dissonance of not being in alignment with them becomes too much so either you leave or adapt. And it's surprising to me even now how many otherwise smart, rational people unconsciously adapt and can't see it until we/they've gotten out.

@mmasnick WTF, she thought it necessary to black out the delve company name, but not the company logo? Clearly a master of espionage.
@mmasnick I agree, desperate sensationalism seeking Elon
@mmasnick I’m jealous. Nobody ever visits my site.
@mmasnick the name sparkling seems legit
@mmasnick She appears to be new to the internet.
@mmasnick how can we view people who turn everything into a conspiracy against them and the people while the lies that they communally repeat is actually an act against the people... It sounds bad, is it by design?
@mmasnick so what would the department of state do yo them exactly ? Diplomat them to death?
@mmasnick and the right complains that the left is a bunch of snowflakes? Projecting as usual!
