Catholic Church: “We most certainly did NOT evolve from monkeys.”

Me: “Okay, what’s the official title of the Pope?”

Catholic Church: …

Me: “Say it.”

Catholic Church: “Primate of Italy.”

@austinkocher Are we finally learning that organized religion is for the monkeys? It’s unfit for humans!
@austinkocher I grew up in the Catholic Church, Catholic School for 13 years including my first year in college. They fully embraced evolutionary theory. It’s important to know that there is an ugly, ignorant bloc within the Church that is ultra-conservative. Pope Francis is at war with them.
@cathymack I know. It’s um well a joke more or less.

@austinkocher

I do hope you consider taking this down. I get that it's a joke, but it's still based on a harmful misconception about Catholics, and people seeing this in the feed will assume the premise of the joke is true.

@webbureaucrat If I take it down, it will be to replace it with a litany of facts about the massive number of children raped by priests and the role of the church in covering it up, as well as a list of offensive things the church has said and done and still do to gay people and trans people and women. So either take a little joke and don’t whine to me about “harmful misconception of Catholics” or I’ll put the real harm, which is what Catholics have done to harm people for 2000 yrs. Your choice.
@webbureaucrat By the way, it’s a dumb little joke about the fact that the Pope is also called officially known as the Primate. You’re not being oppressed. Get over yourself.

@austinkocher

I didn't say I'm oppressed.

I think it's generally a pretty good idea to take down potentially misleading posts even when they *aren't* about marginalized people.

When the story about Andrew Tate getting taken down by a pizza box turned out not to be true, I unboosted the dumb little jokes about pizza boxes even though pizza boxes are not oppressed.

@austinkocher idk why you're acting like that's some kind of threat or something. What kind of monster do you assume I am?

Yes, of course we should talk about those things instead--those things are actually true. They are real problems affecting real people's lives. Of course that's what I choose.

@austinkocher
Well, I do agree, *some* people did not evolve 🤔

@austinkocher I know this is a joke... and it's genuinely funny...

But.. the Vatican has accepted evolution for a while now... although it does give them gas because of some weird fetish with this "soul" thing. :)

The Vatican And Evolution: Once More, With Caveats

If the Catholic Church is going to fully incorporate science into its theology, it will have to build a robust, new teleology, a science of purpose, that has long been out of fashion. It's not as impossible as it sounds.
