@Perowinger94
Traurig, alle beiden Bilder
@Perowinger94 I'd boost this if it had an image description
@Perowinger94 @neileroberts it’s weird how my first reaction to the golf one is that it’s tone deaf and elitist but the ski one is “hey, you have to do what you can to enjoy the last of it” #ski #climatecrisis
@Perowinger94 @neileroberts granted I plan to take my kids skiing this weekend in what looks to be 40-50 degree weather, so that may explain my bias
@tylopoda @Perowinger94 @neileroberts Here's the story behind the golfer - not really pure ignorance, rather some normalization of sad circumstances: https://www.inverse.com/article/36286-photo-viral-reddit-fire-golf-oregon-washington-eagle-creek-why
Golfers From Viral "Flaming Golf Course" Photo Reveal What Happened

"People would play and then pause to stare at the fire...swing, and then stare again."

Inverse
@mstengel @Perowinger94 @neileroberts that’s somewhat how I feel with skiing as well. I feel like I have to get in as much as possible now before there are no places left. It’s impossible not to recognize that like golf, the water and electricity use of ski resorts is only hastening their own demise, but it’s also very hard to give up what you love
@Perowinger94
Das muss dieser "unendliche Spass" sein.
@Perowinger94 Bildbeschreibung? Please? 🥺
@Perowinger94 January 4th in Vermont, it's essentially mud season and the maple sap is flowing. This is not okay.
@Perowinger94 I happen to know where that fire photo was taken (in the Columbia Gorge). The golfer was on the other side of the Columbia River miles away from the fire which was on the Oregon side around Multnomah Falls. In short, it was a very deceptive photo which gained a lot of traction. The golfer was in no danger...
@rebeccawb @Perowinger94 It doesn't make it a lesser symbol: a golf course demands acres++ of short grass and thousands of liters of water, only as a hobby for rich people. From a biodiversity standpoint, it's a dead zone. And yet it steals water that would be needed elsewhere when it's so hot the trees are burning. In the meantime individuals are asked to do "small gestures for the planet".
It's the essence of uncanny human priorities in front of the disaster.
@jeolen @Perowinger94 The Columbia River scenic area being destroyed by a fire caused by an errant firecracker thrown by a goofy teenager who was on a hike is the real tragedy. The environmental impact of the golf course? Well. indeed, that may be an issue, but I think the real issue is how forest management/controlling of fires is such a complex problem with no easy answers. Especially in a scenic wilderness area where access to firefighters is limited by the terrain.
@rebeccawb Thanks for the background info, but I don't see how that lowers the symbolic charge of this photo.
I'm not saying erasing golf courses is a solution to wildfires. I'm saying this picture is a potent symbol in a world of human-made global warming.

@jeolen I get your point. But as a symbol, we need to be aware of both its power and at the same time its lack of nuance.

By the way, I am an not arguing that this is in anyway a fake photo (it was not)...but that there is / was more to the story than that photo conveyed. The world literally was not burning down around that golfer. And the photo was amazing.

@rebeccawb @jeolen

I'm reminded of this art work. It's a composite image, Tony Blair was never in danger.

I think a better word than symbol might be metaphor. We're generally comfortable with this in written language, there's no reason that photography must always directly represent reality.

@rebeccawb @Perowinger94 I don't think the point is whether the golfer was or wasn't in any danger. I think the point is that there was an ENORMOUS FOREST FIRE happening where dude could easily see it if he just happened to look in that direction, and his response was to look the other way and keep playing golf. The exact distance from the flames isn't germane.
@KeithAmmann @Perowinger94 Well...actually I remember this getting a lot of discussion in the Oregonian. The fire wasn't that visible from the Washington side of the river. And yes, while this was a devastating fire, it wasn't that the golfer was inconsiderate. But indeed, it is a provocative photo, I'll give you that.
@rebeccawb @Perowinger94 I'm aware, as a photographer, of how long telephoto lenses collapse distance. I still don't see how you could miss a fire like that from a space that open. The photographer herself was able to see both the golfer and the flames. Even if the line of trees between the golf course and the river blocked the golfer's view, the smoke must have been clearly visible—and voluminous.
@KeithAmmann @Perowinger94 The smoke actually doesn't blow that way (across the river and to the north). The smoke was visible to the south...and I remember flying over the scorched area on the way home from a trip and being horrified and saddened by the damage done to that scenic area. I'm still saddened by it.

Klimawandel in Echtzeit.
@Perowinger94 A few years ago we had a very dry spring and early summer (Ruhr Area, Germany). While trees and plants in a wood and natural reserve, situated near a drying out creek, began to suffer and freshly growing crops turned brown in early May, the large impressive green meadows of the golf course nearby were sprinkled with water fountains for hours every day. This was a very vivid example of the perversity of our modern way of life for me.
@Perowinger94
Was soll ich sagen? Vielleicht 👇
@Perowinger94
Stimmt. Warum sollte der #klimawandel Einfluss auf meine Freizeitaktivitaeten haben?
Es ist so ernüchternd.
@Perowinger94 Fossil energy, to be exact.
@Perowinger94 But the punch line is not that everyone is waking up now because it's so bad. The point is that golf and skiing will become more and more expensive and exclusive because there will be areas for it for a long time to come, albeit more and more remote and difficult to maintain.

There is 180 forms of cognitive bias. Ignoring climate change action is only one of them.
@Perowinger94 I had *Exactly* the same thought...
@Perowinger94 depends on the direction of said energy. Do you blame the golfer/skier or everyone not pictured? As a skier and terrible golfer, most skiers especially are concerned about climate change and act accordingly though obviously not substantially as an unorganized cohort. Given the amount of golf in places like Arizona, I think there are very different constituent attitudes. Personally and IMHO, golfers on the whole could give a shit about climate. Golf can be played on graveyards.
