McCarthy won’t make it as Speaker w/o giving the House away to the MAGA Freedom Caucus. GOP moderates and nearly all Dems must unite behind an alternative. David Joyce?

There is hope...

July 2017, Joyce said that U.S. political discourse had reached a "vitriolic" level. "I do know there's a level of frustration out there," "But we need to work together. [Donald Trump] has gotten into this tug-of-war with the national media. Now we're six months into his presidency ... and infrastructure improvements, tax changes and healthcare law are not getting covered. They are dealing with the tweet du Jour ... and [Trump's tweets] certainly don't help."

@xs4me2 @rbreich I am Joyce’s constituent. He is lying scum bought by the NRA.
@BabyShark @rbreich
Well he is a Republican of course (…).

@rbreich Dems shouldn't budge an inch. There are enough Rs in blue, and swing districts that will eventually consider their political futures, and only 6 are needed.

The longer this shitshow goes on, the worse it is for the republican party. Let the whole world see them as the unserious buffoons incapable of governing that they are for as long as possible. You'll get parry switchers on their side.

@rbreich also don't forget about all the illegal racially gerrymandered maps that were used in 2022 that won't exist in 2024. The Supreme Court handed them a reprieve, but it's a short one.

We ought not save them from themselves. I hope like hell our side is hammering home to the "moderate" repubs that their days are numbered, and they better get on board.

@lisas @rbreich

I tend to agree with this direction. Dems should let the Reps figure it out and do not try and fix anything for them.

Let the Reps really show who they are to members of their own party. The longer this goes the more cracks will happen in the GOP.

@rbreich They need to caucus with the 18 representatives from districts Biden won. That would make an unstoppable body capable of picking the next speaker of a coalition-esque House. Of course Democrats should demand some committee chairmanships. That's called politics.
@bluerootsradio @rbreich
They could bring in Liz Cheney as Speaker.

@clubbeb @rbreich

That's one possibility but probably too volatile for too many trumpists. Would be fun to see but I also remember Liz before the J6 days when she voted with Trump over 90% of the time.

That would most likely be the case with any Republican they pick.

Just pick one willing to do the peoples business and not fight petty cat fights with the opposition.

@bluerootsradio @rbreich At this point it all about the comedy. I have no faith the Repugs can find a leader from within their ranks that is able or willing to actually do the people’s business.
For the next two years Pelosi will coach new Dem leadership and remain unified. Election 2024 will wipe out Repug majority in House. I am Most interested in how the 20 or so Republican House members whose districts went for Biden in 2020 will behave.

@clubbeb @rbreich

I think there's a Republican willing to step up but they are most likely not a current member.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd track the 18 Reps who won in Biden districts and see if there is any negative media about them. Especially any rep who replaced a Democrat. Right now House Democrats have more raw power than the Republicans.

@bluerootsradio @rbreich
I think Republican gerrymandering in Florida and other states is the only reason they have their slim majority.
@rbreich Would it really be better to have a "moderate" republican running the House? At least with a MAGA clown show, they wont get anything done.
@rbreich there are no good republicans. Stop deluding yourself
@rbreich Someone I saw on [bluebird] claimed that Rep. Jim Jordan would be a good alternative to McCarthy, since he has "good relationships on both sides of the aisle." What sides, the far-far-far right and far-far-far-far right?
@rbreich Even if he does become #speakerofthehouse #kevinmccarthy will never wield the gavel alone.
@rbreich David Joyce said he'd vote for TFG were he the Republican nominee in 2024. That's a red line for me.
HARD NO.
@rbreich Robert, if they need us to make a Republican the speaker, shouldn't we get more for it than it just not be a MAGA house? How about a promise that all committees will be 50/50, like the prior senate did it?
@rbreich Are you CRAZY? I am a constituent of Dave Joyce! He has done NOTHING FOR US. He is bought and paid for by the NRA! He was the prosecutor on the Chardon Ohio school shooting case. He saw the grief of 5 families that lost their children and one that is paralyzed from the neck down. He saw the outrage of the community, he rode that conviction and celebrity he got to be elected yet, he has voted against any gun control measure put forth. He also tows the GOP line EVERY TIME!
@rbreich Absolutely agree! If Dems do this however they must demand true bipartisanship and moderation in return.
@rbreich What do you think of the idea of Democrats nominating a moderate Republican (there are a few) or even a right-leaning Republican who is honest (there are some of those)?
@rbreich Well, the #Democrats are already united behind an alternative for #Speaker: #HakeemJeffries. If the #GOP moderates were truly interested in forming a coalition government, 6 or more of them would negotiate with the Dems for power-sharing on committees and vote in Jeffries. Why would Dems cede to the #Republicans when Dems have currently have the plurality?
@rbreich The sad reality is that in a year, we will long for Kevin McCarthy because any likely alternative will be far, far worse.

@rbreich

Wish Adam Kinzenger was still in office.

@rbreich I’m for 6 R’s coming over for Jeffries. What you’re seeing right now is the MAGAts still blowing up government. This is what they want. This is the way they’ll govern if McCarthy gets speaker because he’ll do whatever they say. He already committed that to MTG. People just want a functioning government. Having Qevin as speaker will not do it. #NoQevin
@rbreich Can we actually trust anyone in the Republican party to actually be a moderate? My money is on "No." They wouldn't have been elected as Republicans if they weren't some level of extremists.
@rbreich whoever the gentle lady from Florida was who spoke in Kevin’s defense didn’t help any by slamming the Democrats in Congress. They need us, but they have no clue they do.
@rbreich — saw someone talking about Fred Upton from MI (voted for impeachment, then retired), in same vein.
@rbreich ACKK!! NOOOOO!! He's been my rep. for years and he is a spineless sellout readily available to anyone for a price. PLEASE find someone else.
@rbreich
Once the vote is called to raise the debt ceiling McCarthy is done.
