Saw something like this go around last year and forgot to take part so let me ask, Devs what was:
1) the first game you played?
2) game you love from childhood/teen years?
3) the game that inspired you to become a dev?
4) game that inspires you to be a better dev?

#gamedev

1) First game I played? Probably Donkey Kong Jr., or maybe some Snake clone for DOS...
2) Game I still love from teen years? Clearly Settlers 2: Veni, Vidi, Vici. It's still great, and imho the best Settlers.
3) The game that inspired me to become a dev? I'd say: Kerbal Space Program.
4) The game that inspires me to become a better dev? Dwarf Fortress. It's amazing that this game is still maintainable, despite its complexity.

@BraveRobynArt

1) Oh geez, first game was probably some obscure MS-DOS thing like Dinosaur Adventure.

2) Game I still love from childhood: Majora's Mask, but also, ngl, Oregon Trail II.

3) Inspired me to become a dev: Majora's Mask (again) was the first game to show me the potential games have as a space for meaningful storytelling and beautiful art.

4) This is gonna sound cheesy, but all of my fellow small-time and hobbyist #VnDev people inspire me to be better. For real.

@BraveRobynArt
1) 1st game I played: super mario on the SNES, I was 5, it was awesome! Well it still is.
2) game from childhood: super smash bros melee. The definition of easy to play, hard to master.
3) the game that inspired me to start game dev: Dota Underlords. Their cooperation mechanics are really well made, and I thought "that's a good idea, but what if..."
4) the game that inspires me to be a better game dev: honestly super mario. It's so simple, it's brilliant. But also Dead Cells!
@BraveRobynArt
1) 1st game: My 1st home system was the Atari 2600 with Asteroids!
2) Childhood: Earthbound - An RPG that was also funny & weird.
3) Inspired me to become a dev: Grim Fandango/Psychonauts Tim Schafer's studio Double Fine inspired me to leave Pixar to try something new
4) Inspires me to be better: Breath of the Wild. Just love the world and art style.

@tashasounart What an amazing list! Yes, love Double Fine games as well!! Oh that sounds like you have already had an amazing carear and i wish you all the best in game dev!!
@BraveRobynArt Thank you, I'm glad I can still be involved in games in some aspect 💙
@BraveRobynArt
1) first: Prince of Persia
2) I still love: The Secret of Monkey Island. An engrossing, formative, wonderful experience at the time and it's still got that magic feeling in it.
3) inspired me to become a dev: a bunch of AGS games, including dozens of jam entries, showed what was possible and rekindled my desire to finish something myself...so, the AGS community.
4) inspires me to become better: A Short Hike. A mostly-solo effort with a beautiful personal signature throughout.
@BraveRobynArt
1) Probably Asteroids on a hospital console or Peanut Butter Panic.
2) Command and Conquer, Homeworld, Myst, Journeyman
3) No game, my dad. I was playing SMB3 and my dad walks up the stairs and says: You know people make those.
@robisnowtired What a great dad! Great list as well!
@BraveRobynArt Great selection of games! (although I haven't heard of Primal before 😅)
@Twinfox It was on the PS2, it was the game that introduced me to metal haha.

@BraveRobynArt

1. Wacky Wheels! Sprite animal racing game on Win95
2. Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale
3. Tribes Ascend. I got into gamedev through a group of people wanting to make a successor to the Tribes series. It morphed into a startup company
4. Sheesh, there's too many! Elden Ring for the past year though

@Voidie3D I have never heard of wacky wheels. OMG Tribes, I loved that game!! I remember playing it at a LAN party for the first time and just loved it so so much. That’s really cool how did the start-up go?
@BraveRobynArt
Oh it ended horribly 😂 We made a game called Midair, it was pretty bad and flopped. But I learned a lot in those 4 years!
@Voidie3D Also hard with start-ups. At least you learned a lot and hopefully you have gone on to bigger and better things since 🙂
@BraveRobynArt
1) SMB on NES.
2) Final Fantasy IV is probably my biggest sentimental favorite.
3) I've always messed around with making games, but I think Wizardry VI is what made me start taking it seriously.
4) Any great games made by solo developers help me visualize what I can achieve myself.

@BraveRobynArt

1) I'm not 100% certain, but it was probably Commander Keen in Invasion of the Vorticons

2) Thief 2! Even today its atmosphere is unmatched, and there are STILL far too few games that have mechanics as awesome as rope arrows.

3) Again, Thief 2. The fact that you could MOD A GAME?! Revolutionary for my teen brain.

4) Inspires me to be a better dev? TF2, baby. It did so many things right for its first few years, and it's a continual inspiration even if it's gotten weird.

@[email protected] needed to guess at the first game as well. Tetris is the first one i remember, that and doom.
I missed the Thief games growing up, as only has a Gameboy and then a Super Nintendo. I really need to go back and play them. Great list!!!
@BraveRobynArt The Thief games are pretty rough these days unless you're comfortable with ancient mouse+KB control schemes and super blocky graphics, but the atmosphere and voice acting are incredibly fun, and the mechanics are still super solid. Highly recommended.
@xavierck I’m better with that stuff these days, I used to be like “OMG is so clunky an old I can’t play this” but I see the attraction in older games now, also going back and playing my favs from childhood and catching up on things that I missed because we didn’t have a PC for a long time when I was little.
@BraveRobynArt
1) Super Mario Bros 3
2) Thief 2. Would love to see that redone, e.g. in a cyberpunk world
3) No game
4) The Witcher 3. You can just feel how much love for the story went into the work
@underdarkGIS The Witcher 3 is great. Really enjoyed what I played of it, I really hope the dev team get to take their time with the next project.
@BraveRobynArt
1) I have a vague memory of playing Super Mario 64 when I was very young, so probably that.
2) Let's say Spyro 2, still very fond of the world design and secrets in that game.
3) N (the Flash game also known as Way of the Ninja). It got me into programming and game physics, and every career choice I've made since has followed more or less directly from that.
4) Spelunky is a tremendously elegant design that never gets old.

QT @BraveRobynArt

1) "Played" video games before Zelda, but that was probably the first one I really *played*

2) Too many, but Planescape:Torment will always be in my memory. For me it has the best story & depth of all times.

3) Baldur's Gate. Before I was dreaming how it would be. After BG, I decided that I want to become a game dev.

4) Wizardry 7. As teen I couldn't imagine how to build up such a world, autonomous NPCs,... I wanted to create something like that!
