For #TombTuesdays. In #Aoyama #Cemetery in #Tokyo there is a section where foreigners are buried. In it, this tombstone, Annie Mary Baty, 1872-1945. I did some research; Annie, her sibling Thomas, and their mother are all buried in Aoyama. They were all born in the UK but followed to Japan when Thomas went to work as an adviser to the Japanese government in 1916, through WWII and after; their citizenship was revoked, and so they are buried here. 1/2

2/2 But what's even more interesting is that Thomas also went by Irene Clyde, and was one of the founders of _Urania,_ a journal of what we'd now describe as #feminist #gender studies. Irene would likely identify as #GenderNonconforming, possibly #transgender, #NonBinary, or #TransWoman. This more than 100 years ago.
