A Carved Stone Cross Amidst the Whispering Gums

Angaston Cemetery, Angaston, South Australia.

As the town of Angaston grew and the original cemetery became too small, twelve local citizens purchased four acres from Johann Gottfried Hanisch in 1867 to establish a new cemetery.

These men, among them Charles Holmes, James Jepson, and David Tavender, ran it as a private concern until the District Council of Angaston acquired it in 1911.

The cemetery has since remained a key historical and genealogical site for the region. It’s now located at 302 Angaston Road, with thousands of memorials documented and photographed.

Die Vergangenheit des Ortes wird auf dem Friedhof von Viscri spürbar. Viele Grabsteine tragen deutsche Inschriften und spiegeln frühere Generationen der Siebenbürger Sachsen wider. Nach der Auswanderung im 20. Jhd blieben diese Spuren zurück.

The first recorded burial took place on 9 November 1851, for Christopher Biggs, who tragically drowned at Light Bridge.
