@siracusa's birthday cake, Samsung's new monitor, and why Overcast isn't moving to CloudKit after all.

Accidental Tech Podcast: 516: One of My Fits of Rage

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm @siracusa I doubt the new Samsung display will probably be too expensive to tempt me, but on top of that, I’m already used to running a 27” 4K at full resolution, so I’m not sure how I’d deal with 5K.
@atpfm @siracusa I’m in the middle of listening to the rest of the episode but spending the first 5 minutes talking about cake was just the kind of energy I needed to start off my morning commute. 👌
@atpfm would pay for a podcast without Marco! Would pay more for one where Marco's ramblings are edited down by 80%. Would pay most if Marco could self-edit in real time and come close to Siracusa-levels of conciseness. ✂️
The reason is I'm complaining instead of just unsubscribing is that I thoroughly enjoy what you are doing, when each of you are given reasonable airtime. Do you have a sense of the distribution right now?
@atpfm “can you give the 10 sec summary of your 29 minute podcast”
*checks chapter length*
*is 50 minutes*
😂
@atpfm Re: Apple Studio Display camera vs. Samsung Viewfinity S9 camera. The Studio Display has a 12-megapixel camera, so it is also capable of 4K resolution like the Samsung (just like 12-megapixel iPhones have been able to capture 4K video). If the Samsung camera gives out a better image, that has to be either thanks to a larger lens, a larger sensor, better processing or some combination of them.
@tuomas_h @atpfm 12MP is for the full 122 degree lens though - 80% of those pixels will be ceiling/floor/walls.
@abhibeckert @atpfm Sure. But since the Samsung camera is claiming to do auto-crop and follow just like Center Stage, it also needs to have an ultra wide-ish lens.
@atpfm I was a bit worried about the Time Machine + iCloud Photo Library thing, but it seems like it’s included in Time Machine backups: https://support.apple.com/guide/photos/back-up-the-photos-library-pht6d60d10f/mac
Back up the library in Photos on Mac

In Photos on your Mac, back up your photo library in case image files become corrupted or are unintentionally deleted.

@atpfm @siracusa Two-client tactic for “reply with individual account to toots read in shared account” is two clients. EG left-screen is @atpfm, right-screen is @siracusa.
@tlholaday I’m on my phone, mostly, but my client app can switch accounts pretty easily. The main annoyance is copying the post URL and then searching for it in the other account.

@siracusa

In two Mastodon clients that I tried (Toot! for iOS, Fedilab for Android), you can long press on the reply button to choose the account to reply from.

@tlholaday

@siracusa I wonder whether { switch-account; search; reply; return } can be implemented on iOS with a fewer-than-ten-statement Shortcut on the Share sheet using the Mastodon API and the `Get Contents of URL` Action. Mastodon Toolkit for Shortcuts waiting to be born.
@siracusa @tlholaday guessing hundreds have mentioned but in toot! you can long press on reply/fav to change the acct you perform the reply/fav as, im doing it right now

@atpfm @siracusa I haven’t seen a reply specifically stating that 4K is 8.3 MP (or almost 9 MP for 4K cinema, but where do we ever see that). This is still less than the 12 MP on the Apple Studio Display.

Sorry, spent too much time reading about and researching various security cameras.

@atpfm @siracusa probably my hearing declining but anyone else finding John’s audio more challenging? Noticed since about half a year that I need to raise the volume when John talks (compared to very crisp Marco/Casey).
@[email protected] for the record, the Ina Garten chocolate cake recipe is also a winner.
