Today, the civil war in the Republican Party has come into the open. But it’s not particularly civil and it’s not exactly a war.

It’s the mindless hostility of a political party that’s lost any legitimate reason for being. https://robertreich.substack.com/p/what-the-hell-is-the-republican-party

The Party's Over: RIP, GOP

Today's display shows it no longer has any reason for being

Robert Reich

@rbreich

They all agree on impoverishing or killing off the opposition and burning the Constitution, tho.

I think the civil war is just cosmetic.

@rbreich but with the US two-party system what other options are there? It’s not a lot better in the UK of course, but I find it astounding that there are literally no viable alternatives and seemingly no way to build any.
@rbreich We wish it was over. The Republican party still has a lot of power, and coordinated action to use that power. Power and influence far beyond voter support. That's not going away overnight.
@rbreich Spot on. There is nothing left. It’s completely illegitimate.
@rbreich All they know how to do is be angry.

@rbreich
The GOP has an impressive ability to unite and act as one, mostly to drive inaction. They'll keep that up regardless of which faction wins the party.

What else will they drive? Which faction will aim their repeals, regressions, and repressions?

@rbreich More reason Democrats need to stay cohesive as a party.
@rbreich Is it my imagination or are those Klan hoods between the elephant’s feet?
@rbreich unfortunately, people won't stop voting for them.

@rbreich yeah, but 40%+ of America keeps voting for their hateful, vengeful, out of touch candidates!

#GQP
#VoteBlue
#VoteBlueIn24

@rbreich But, what replaces it? I believe this is a coordinated effort by some Trumpers who remain in Congress to destroy the party while building around Trump’s recent threat to run as an Independant. So, … again, what replaces the GOP?
@rbreich Sorry, but the idea that the new GOP is a working class movement and the Trump base was distinctly white low-paid wage-workers has no basis in reality https://doi.org/10.1016/j.electstud.2019.102068 If liberals want change for the better, they need to drop this myth and acknowledge what is actually driving things https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/537A8ABA46783791BFF4E2E36B90C0BE/S1049096518000367a.pdf
@simulatedchollas @rbreich The claim that Trump victory could be seen as a form of protest voting may have been the claim of the Dem establishment and media, which I didn’t see promoted actually, but the voters recognized the racism. Conservative voters defending Nazi marches, the anti- BLM, the wall, anti antifa, all lives matter positions made it clear. It’s good that they did the research, but it’s not a revelation.
@GwladysPendlebury @rbreich I could have made it clearer but I was responding to Robert directly and to similar pundits who continue to use “working class” as a descriptor and explanation—as he did in the piece he wrote and shared.

@rbreich And so it begins. Roll Call has started. First order of business is electing #speaker

#kevinmccarthy does not have the votes.

We may see a tumultuous uproar after the first vote.

@rbreich I keep wondering what it actually means when people self-describe as “republican”. As far as I’m concerned it equates to “racist fascist evangelical” more often than not. It’s really not a political party anymore.
@rbreich this is the one and only thing I would like to thank tRump for. Such a masterful, singlehanded takedown. 😂
@rbreich for it to be a civil war you need two sides to be engaged, right now only one side is fighting, the other is kinda like mildly engaged
@rbreich idk, they have basically the Supreme Court locked down. That will keep them going for a while. And then, all they have to do is shift some policies and they'll be competitive popularity wise again. But that could be nice, a GOP made up of conservative Democrat policies.
@rbreich The GOP still has their party platform which clearly states that the support…let me see here. I know there’s a copy around here someplace. Here it is and…Nevermind.
@rbreich if they keep on track I'd say they have maybe 8 years at most before the entire republican party dismantles itself completely
@rbreich We need to scrap this Duopoly. Go to a Parliamentary type of government and reject MIP’s. #GetMoneyOutOfPolitics
@rbreich What's the over/under on the number of times there will be a vote for Speaker of the House?
@rbreich As opposed to the Democratic Party, whose sole reason for existing has become to suppress the detection of new and dangerous Covid variants while feeding working class families to them?
@rbreich
Parties tend to break apart when ideological splinters become so great they can't stand together, the Democratic Republicans just completely broke apart because of Jackson, the whigs because of increasingly radical abolitionism. That doesn't mean they are irrelevant even if it did happen, republicans split the vote and came back in force for 1860, it also likely isn't going to happen now. Republicans aren't fighting for positions with the speaker, just power, and Ron wouldn't split.
@rbreich I sincerely, truly appreciate your ability to say/write the facts so well. Thank you. Now, can we turn that elephant image so it really shows the end?
@rbreich if you sustain populists for too long in your party they will eat the party alive from the inside keeping the vital organs as long as possible.
@rbreich as the country song says “turn off the lights, the party’s over. “

@rbreich Metallica wrote a song about it. Like to hear it? Hear it go...
