Scientists say planet in midst of sixth mass extinction, Earth's wildlife running out of places to live - 60 Minutes

Leading biologist tells Scott Pelley humans would need "five more Earths" to maintain our current way of life.

@JoshuaHolland Right ! Only looking on the devastating climate events, humanity should wake up.
We are extremely close to the point of no return.
@JoshuaHolland It really should... along with a nice clear description as to how it was caused.
@JoshuaHolland I saw that story last night. It was an important and we'll reported story, but it struck me as "Oh great - here's yet ANOTHER thing we all should be worrying about."
@JoshuaHolland
Humans have wiped out 70% of vertebrate wildlife in just 50 years. The last major extinction lasted 1 to 2.5 million years.
This should be a massive story.

Honestly, I'm glad we don't have kids. Humanity is not equipped to deal with this kind of shared human catastrophe. There's too much money to lose by people whose only metric of happiness is more money.

@JoshuaHolland “In what year will the human population grow too large for the Earth to sustain? The answer is about 1970.”
That bit stopped me in my tracks.
@JoshuaHolland I feel completely powerless to do anything about this. We need so many changes.
@hydrocabron @JoshuaHolland Do what you can. A world full of people trying to improve things is still better than one where everyone has given up.

Do you know how honey bees ward off a hostile species like those killer hornets? When a hornet comes to prey on their honey, greedy and mean, the victims cluster in a big ball of buzzing bees, raising the temperature ever higher, until the hornet dies, and the bees - barely - survive. There’s an analogy here on the earth, and us, in our time. Maybe those Qanon folks will end up being right, reptiles rule. Just after we get killed off because they keep enabling the hornets among us.

@JoshuaHolland

Watched with difficulty, the sound and pictures would not work without my keeping touch on and off thru whole time of it for almost 14 mins....

This is very factual and if there is no evolution thinking on making changes, it will get shorter in time for sure for many and this also makes one think that Covid was and is a population control thing...
This brings to mind as well as those not affected by covid could be something in its self a new population beginning ...

@JoshuaHolland maybe we should help Elon accelerate his move to Mars and have him take 6 billion of his closest friends there too...

Although actually we probably only need to send about 1% of the population which would be 80 million. They just need to be the right ones... The rest of us will figure it out without them in a few generations and reduce the population naturally.

Earth on trajectory to Sixth Mass Extinction say biologists

Mass biodiversity extinction events caused by extreme natural phenomena have marked the history of life on Earth five times

@JoshuaHolland
And with all of this facing us we still have to deal with the selfish politicians in DC and around the world who care more about themselves and their party than they do the life on this, our only planet. I wish the 6th extinction could be more selective and make extinct those whose selfish motives (and we all know who they are) stand in the way of reversing this catastrophe.
@JoshuaHolland
It should be top story agree.
@JoshuaHolland It might have been with just Ceballos. Erhlich has 50+ years of being wrong to recommend him. 60 Minutes knows that, too.

@JoshuaHolland The signs & warnings have been around for decades yet politics are damning all of us.

"Biologists and fishery managers had been warning for months that preliminary indications show the stocks in trouble, with rapid declines suspected to involve multiple ecosystem conditions. Those range from variations in ocean temperatures and season sea ice extent to predator pressure." https://www.nationalfisherman.com/alaska/alaska-shuts-down-crab-seasons-after-dismal-survey-results

@JoshuaHolland We have IDIOTS running our government, which includes other governments through out the world.

It's all about money, not the planet for those in power, very few care even tho many know this to be the truth.

I live in the NE, you rarely needed A/C, now it's essential from Late May- Sept (give or take a few weeks here and there).

@JoshuaHolland Can't wait for the NYT Opinions saying wildlife should quit buying avocado toast and mobile phones.
@JoshuaHolland
Earth’s wildlife (including most humans, but excluding the super-wealthy) running out of places to live.
@JoshuaHolland If you think wildlife has it rough, try buying a home in a G7 nation.

@JoshuaHolland

This is a serious issue that should be a top priority for governments, organizations, and individuals around the world.

Protecting biodiversity and the habitats of plants and animals is essential for the health of the planet and all the species that call it home.

@JoshuaHolland I wish I could say we had a good run but, seeing as how this was entirely preventable...

I just hope we can leave behind some concrete knowledge/info/instructions for the next set of civilizations and species...

@JoshuaHolland

Let's point out that we can be MORE comfortable and MORE secure by doing things in sustainable ways. Bioplastic is creeping in, all unnoticed. We are now able to house and sustain people far more locally by using dirt differently and better.

Container based microfarms can help stave off malnutrition; larger aeroponic and hydroponic farms can feed cities while reducing fuel use dramatically.

COVID proved that most desk jobs should be remote and the impact is dramatic.

@JoshuaHolland

That's why I roll my eyes and groan every time this issue comes around.

We can reduce population, but China is evidence that mandates work out badly for people and society.

Broadly available birth control and reproductive health care will move the needle on global population, as part of a suite of policies, but as the solutions are generally hyperlocal, that's where the decisions need to flow from.

That means everyone needs to be as well educated as they have time for.

@JoshuaHolland

So we need to stem the tide of anti intellectual politics. Considering what they have cost us, I believe the time has come to send the Calvinists and con artists to the ashbin of history.

Audit churches strictly; tax those who do not comply. The benefits of clergy must go to those actually doing the work. That ain't any televangelist!

We need a government that provides the means for folks to do for themselves with less telling them how it's done.
