The Abandoned Pittsburgh Post Gazette Headquarters | Abandoned America

The Post Gazette's facilities old facility was closed when the new suburban one was built, leaving a perfect time capsule.

@AbandonedAmerica Boy, this brings back memories. My Dad worked for 40 years as a pressman for the LA Times. He would take me through the pressroom when I was a little kid. Later, when I was in college, he got me a part time job as a paperhandler, moving rolls of newsprint to the presses down in the reelroom, one level below the photo. All the presses were Hoe, except one was a Goss press. The Times downtown pressroom closed when they opened the new plant on Olympic Blvd around 1990.
@brownsbay that must have been amazing. I would have loved to have seen this in motion
@AbandonedAmerica
I can't figure out why there's still newspaper in the presses, stopped midstream.
@cjordahl @AbandonedAmerica It’s a time saver. When an edition is done the press is slowed to a stop and the paper left in place. That way the pressmen do not have to re-web the press for the next run. Even if there is a configuration change, it makes it easier to re-web if the paper can be cut where the change occurs rather than feed it all the way through the units.
@J_T @AbandonedAmerica
Aha! That makes sense! Now that I've heard your explanation it's almost obvious. Very cool, thanks!
@cjordahl @AbandonedAmerica my pleasure. They’re amazing machines. The presses we ran could put out 40,000 copies per hour. Every second counts and wasted time is not tolerated in a newspaper pressroom!
@J_T @cjordahl thanks, I wondered about that too!
@J_T @cjordahl @AbandonedAmerica Webouts suck. At least ten minutes to web up and another three to perfect the alignment and tension.
A lot of paper waste for that whole operation as well.
@AbandonedAmerica At least, when they shut it down, they left the newsprint web in place.
@kennysmith probably didn't know they weren't coming back?
@AbandonedAmerica the extent to which traditional journalism is dead is one of the least understood stories of the last half century.
@DaveWellmanB yeah. It's hard to believe such massive empires vanish so quickly
@AbandonedAmerica spent many hours of the day and late into the night watching presses run and lending a hand. It’s a hard business and it’s hard on families. I thought I loved it, but I know I hated it.
@AbandonedAmerica Love the little Daleks lurking at the end of each machine.
@AbandonedAmerica Looks like the last edition was banadoned on the press...
@AbandonedAmerica All I see are a bunch of Hoes.

@AbandonedAmerica Looks like we don't have material shortages at all...

We merely abandoned them.

@AbandonedAmerica Well, that’s heart-breaking to a former Pittsburgher and a former pressroom labourer…
@AKMA they moved out to the burbs but I'm sure a lot of jobs didn't make the transition
@AbandonedAmerica If this isn't a set for a steam punk film...
@AbandonedAmerica Straight out of Fallout. I dig.
@MrMisfit @AbandonedAmerica @MrMisfit God yeah they are gorgeous. The intensity of the greens is ridiculous.
@MrMisfit I think I'm going back to replay 4 soon, can't wait
