I needed to read this today. My New Years revolution is to live life vibrantly, like a benevolent alien.

I think it might help. 🧡

@autisticompulsive as a semi benevolent alien, I agree it does improve life to look at humans like oddities!
@autisticompulsive ooo that vonnegut quote is exceptionally fine
@autisticompulsive If you'll forgive an unsolicited book recommendation, 'Everyone's a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too' by Jomny Sun tells the story of one such benevolent alien, and it's lovely.
@autisticompulsive I love all of this so much. Going to try to head into the new year with this in mind
@autisticompulsive what an absolutely wonderful collection of bits. The Kurt Vonnegut bit in particular is so fantastic. “We’re here on Earth to fart around” that’s gonna be my motto from now on 😆
@autisticompulsive This is the perfect post to end the past year & begin anew in 2023. Thank you & Many Blessings. May 2023 bring you joy, good company, giggles & laughs, many hugs & safe adventures (COVID isn’t over please take care).
@autisticompulsive The sheer number of frozen pizza brands is a modern mundane marvel.
@autisticompulsive It really does make the world a bit nicer.

@autisticompulsive
Me: *explaining how multiple shops were visited looking for an oddly specific thing*

Them: You could have Amazon'd that?

Me: Sure, but then I'd have spent 5 minuets benefitting Bezos. This way I had a fun afternoon, supported local shops (or at least local instances of chains), and got some exercise without noticing I was doing it.

@autisticompulsive So, per Resident Alien, you will be binging Law & Order reruns this year? DUN-DUN-DUN... 😉
Yup, quite ‘revolutionary’, 🙂

@arinbasu1

LMAO, how did I not even notice that until now? You know what though, I'm keeping it. New Year's revolutions > resolutions any day. 😁

Actually at a philosophical level they are so true! 🙂
@autisticompulsive Thanks for this! I also love "new year's revolution", and that fact that this appears to be a real Vonnegut quote vs. the many misattributed ones.
@autisticompulsive By all means take on the world like a benevolent alien, but do remember to shut down your intellectual faculties first 😬
@autisticompulsive I think about that Vonnegut quote often and the people I’ve shared it with have told me it’s changed them. Keep sharing!
@autisticompulsive just finished a vonnegut novel i love his manner of writing and the way he turns a phrase.
@autisticompulsive honestly that first pic was me going to buy groceries for the first time since the 2020 Covid lockdown. Even through my mask I could smell so many things, new since *months*.

@mrbellek

Ohhhhh yes yes yes. This was me after being bedbound for four years! Not just the sensory delights, I had to relearn basic stuff like using a credit card because it had been so long and it gave me so much childlike wonder at things I had previously taken for granted. I need to tap back into those feelings. 🧡

@autisticompulsive

benevolent sociopathic...
its an easy mistake to make.

@autisticompulsive
Generally speaking I feel like this is my default attitude. I'm content to let people be who they are and appreciate what 'is'. I've often wondered how to suggest it and this is pretty good.
Except that part of the Vonnegut quote where he says, "We're here on Earth to fart around. And of course the computers will do us out of that" Clearly he has taken a more utilitarian view of them and certainly hasn't understood my usage.
Yeah, we need to move, but I always hated P.E.

@Batronyx

To be fair, he died in 2007 and I don't know that he was aware of all the amazing ways people make and find community online. Maybe I'd rephrase it as "the capitalism will do us out of that." Because of course we can, metaphorically speaking at least, dance with computers too. 🧡

@autisticompulsive I remember having this kind of thought while watching a foreign film. “Oh I wish I were in Paris, or Berlin, where everything's interesting…”, and then realising that everything's interesting EVERYWHERE, right outside my front door were all these things and people and foods I’d never encountered before.

@negative12dollarbill

"Everything's Interesting Everywhere" is an incredible book title and if you don't want to use it I'd love to nick it 😂🧡

@autisticompulsive I needed that too, thank you.

@autisticompulsive

Even as someone who's made his career in IT, I loved reading this, as I love reading everything Kurt Vonnegut wrote.

@nickdixon

Just such an amazing dude. Saw things in such incredible ways. 🧡

@autisticompulsive @briankrebs Boredom provides so many opportunities for creativity and inspiration.

@timothyreed
@briankrebs

“Human beings make life so interesting. Do you know, that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to invent boredom.” --Terry Pratchett

@autisticompulsive
Holy F–ing Crap! I love it when I'm in this frame of mind! And in my daily life I encounter some other human going about their activities, and secretly think to myself:

"Hello fellow sophont! How amazing to encounter another thinking being to interact with! What wonderfully constructive shenanigans do you think we can collaborate on today?" 😃

My brain isn't always chugging along in a way conducive to this outlook. But when it is: Yeah!

@PTR_K

Tbh that whole quote is basically how I interact with other autistic people 😂😂

I'm feeling like I can work on mindfully redirecting my mind to this kind of chugging along. It's regular mindfulness with an added extra step--first, notice your mind has drifted from the present moment, and then notice what's WONDROUS in the present moment 🧡

@autisticompulsive I am a benevolent alien who now lacks a sense of humor with shenanigans because of my experiences last year.

@nannybee

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope 2023 has some of what you need to heal. 🧡

@autisticompulsive

This, Humm, hit me in the feels. I am one of those “computer people” and I need to connect to the world more.

Thanks for sharing!

@autisticompulsive New Years Revolution: Be a #BenevolentAlien

@jpickell @autisticompulsive *Smiles in #Griffin from #MenInBlack III*

#BenevolentAlien #MichaelStuhlbarg

Griffin cackling a little running gleefully to the jetpacks in the movie is just pure love.

@autisticompulsive “fart around more” is my New Year’s resolution.
@autisticompulsive I personally believe that one of peoples biggest issues in the world is taking the magic out of everything. We take everything for granted, including people, and it makes us numb and pessimistic.
@autisticompulsive go to ALDI instead of your regular supermarket — it’s like taking an overseas holiday
@autisticompulsive I behave like this when out cycling, drinking in a pub or walking the dog -its what keeps me sane(er) :)
@autisticompulsive This is a terrific way to start the year!
@autisticompulsive

@autisticompulsive I'm bad at paying attention to how pretty my surroundings are, carrying a dedicated camera has helped a lot.
@autisticompulsive I love this overall, but oh my god, the only way I can withstand the grocery store is with the habit goggles! I went to a new-to-me Whole Foods the other day and was way over my head with too much sensory everything. It's bright and smelly and colorful and crowded...
@autisticompulsive tbf, part of the problem with that sentence is "Whole Foods". They're somehow so much worse than other grocery stores.

@inherentlee

Oh God yeah no, I'm very much taking the spirit of this myself vs the specific suggestion. I either dissociate or get sensory overload the second I get in a supermarket, lol!

@autisticompulsive they're such a nightmare!!
@autisticompulsive live each day as though it were your first 🌻✨
@autisticompulsive I don’t think I’m ever going to get joy from being in a supermarket. It feels like everything there was designed to give me headaches.

@enby_of_the_apocalypse

The supermarket was just an example, I suspect--it's not one that would work for me either. Right now I'm mostly trying this down the park. 🧡

@autisticompulsive I agree with the general message, life is more enjoyable that way. Like I could just hurry from place to place or I could watch the crows as I walk by and be happy about how they are such funny animals.
