You see that thin line of light? That's the edge of the atmospheric skin surrounding our planet. All the climate occurs in that little collection of gases, and that's what we're flooding with greenhouse gas contaminants.

@petergleick I crave the idea that we scientists could convince others (either on the fence or dead-set against reality) by showing them such clear and compelling images and data. Persuasion is slightly better in medicine, but not by much. Makes me feel like we are all Cassandras warning the Aegean fleet of their impending doom.
@petergleick horrifying is that people cannot comprehend the difference between weather and climate ... that's where the problem begins imho.
@petergleick It's very beautiful, but reading the toot I feel a faint sadness...

@ScriptorViator @petergleick

That is, how I felt. 🌍🌎🌏

@petergleick Wunderschönes Bild, wie ist es entstanden? Also was macht den roten Streifen?
@junior42 @petergleick Vermutlich auf/untergehende Sonne?!
@petergleick Do we just need an oil change maybe

@petergleick
I still like George Carlin's take on all of this. "The planet's fine... WE'RE fucked!"

@petergleick I've saved that picture to my phone. I've tried to explain this to people in the past but this really shows it.
@petergleick as i understand it, it is still less than 0.1%. Not exactly flooding it.
@at0micandy @petergleick it's true: the CO2 forms 412 parts per million of atmospheric air. But without that, the global temperature would be around -20 Celsius. A little has a big effect.
@at0micandy You're making the classic mistake of confusing a small amount with a small effect. Even a tiny amount of something bad can poison you. Even small amounts of greenhouse gases can, and do, affect the #climate.
@petergleick ISTR that most of the mass of the atmosphere is in the bottom 10,000 feet or so. Which is the thin dark blue onion skin you can just see. The rest is important, but the blue onion skin is the bit we're filling with crap.
@petergleick Buon anno đŸ„°đŸ™â˜źïž
@petergleick Does anyone have a source for this photo?
@emperor4 Screenshotted from my TV. High-resolution image from a camera on the ISS.
@petergleick cool! Would you happen to have a link to this camera feed on the ISS?
@emperor4 I don't, sorry. Maybe a NASA link somewhere.
@petergleick A similar picture showing just how thin the soil layer is would have a similar impact...
@petergleick how many tonnes of CO2 are released when a volcano erupts ?
@VornyWorld Very, very little compared to CO2 from burning fossil fuels. Negligible in fact
@petergleick to be fair everything and everyone you have ever known or even known about is in like the bottom 10% of that tiny shell. We have to take a long view or we will be limited (sharply) to a short one.
@petergleick which is to say, nice pic, I agree, but it’s in my nature to add that bit of disaster porn because we might as well look at precisely how thoroughly we have fucked ourselves. Pardon my language. I’m genx and “fuck” is my other Oxford comma.
@petergleick and thanks to corruption greed and ignorance, it's not going to stop anytime soon!

The engineer and remote sensing scientist in me feels compelled to clarify that “that little collection of gasses” includes everything below the orange layer of ionized upper atmosphere.

@petergleick Curious what part of the spectrum was this image taken in? The clouds look trippy.
@petergleick I wish more folks would think about that for even a minute.
@petergleick
And yet, how many people that post these toots, boost this toot, favorite this toot, or reply thoughtfully to this toot - are STILL going to burn gasoline TODAY?
@petergleick I don’t understand how people don’t believe in global warming the science is settled the same science that says men can’t get pregnant small children are not capable of engaging in sexual relationships and there are only two genders so oh wait we are only supposed to believe the first one right? sorry I’m trying to fuck this chick and she is one of those shit for brains liberal so I’m trying to pretend that I believe some of the stupid shit she talks about
@petergleick Yup, the top of Mt Shasta is roughly where the death zone begins.
