Australians may be known for a laconic, easygoing, laidback attitude; but then we also have Australian Standard AS/NZS 2007.1-2005, which prescribes how we should stack our dishwashers
real talk, but what are the chances one of the members of the EL-059 (Dishwashers, Clothes Washers and Dryers) committee at Standards Australia included this just to quash a long-running argument with their spouse about the optimal stacking of the home dishwasher
@600v_DC followed closely by the retort “since you’re the ‘expert’, you should be doing the dishes from now on 😡”

@600v_DC if I’ve not had dessert today, do I still need to wash the dessert bowls? Also, if I don’t own soup bowls, will my plates still wash up to the Standard specifications?
These are surely the biggest questions.

@600v_DC I am printing and lamenting right now.
Also don’t get me wrong, ich bin heiß für normüng so much that I put the ‘Stan’ into ‘Standardisation.’ not hating, just appreciating
@600v_DC Neat! I’m not that surprised, in a world where there’s a standard covering “biodynamic” products (AS 6000–2015 Organic and biodynamic products), and the more believable wheelie-bin-colour standard (AS 4123.7–2006 Mobile Waste Containers – Part 7: Colours, markings and designation requirements). AS 1657 is a personal favourite (paging @Kels_316) and AS 3000 remains an absolute banger.
@600v_DC
Righto, dishwashing done. Now let’s get started on the laundry:
@600v_DC this is great, but is there anything in there about whether the cutlery goes in 'handles up' or 'handles down'?
@larrylong don’t poke the bear, or you’ll trigger civil unrest

@larrylong @600v_DC

Depends how I feel on the day.

Handles up - life is good
Pointy bits up - back away slowly and do not make eye contact

@WendyMsGator @600v_DC I like that. Just point at the dishwasher without saying a word when people walk into the house on those days
@larrylong @600v_DC
Handles down.
Per the Spülmaschinenentladungsgesetz section IV paragraph 20.
At least in Germany.
@BlippyTheWonderSlug @larrylong wasn’t this further clarified in the Spülmaschineneinleitungsgesetzermächtigungsverordnungausnahmeobjektbestimmungen to exclude sharp objects such as knives?
@600v_DC @larrylong
You're right! It appears I didn't read the small paragraph on the penultimate page!

@600v_DC Mmm, valuable knowledge that - definitely worth $186.21...

Wonder if S*I Gl*bal would try and send you a nastygram for this post (lol)

@600v_DC @timrichards This just may solve a long simmering feud in my household.
@600v_DC But god forbid if you buy the tumbler glasses that are just a little too tall for the glassware section.

@600v_DC

Where the hell does my pasta cooker go? And I don't even own that many plates.

@600v_DC I see you've met my husband...🙄
@600v_DC Of _course_ we have a standard for that.

@600v_DC for the record, https://store.standards.org.au/product/as-nzs-2007-1-2005 is a test specification. So for standardising purposes I believe it's quite reasonable to specify a dish/cutlery layout.

Of course, though, people will take it too far.

AS/NZS 2007.1:2005 | Standards Australia

@600v_DC I clearly need to buy more saucers and soup plates for optimum stackage
@600v_DC sorry, but only plebs have dishwashers with cutlery baskets. Good dishwashers have a cutlery tray at the very top
@600v_DC Wait a minute... do you mean you don't wash pots in the dishwasher? Only dishes and cups?
@600v_DC
The standard specifies a "standard method" of loading a dishwasher for the purposes of conducting comparison tests between dishwashers.
@600v_DC @Binder Copying this to send to my partner.
@600v_DC you can tell this one is from the kiwis because of the "cutlery besket".
@600v_DC they're laid back especially because of stuff like this. They're not going to waste good beach-time on inefficient dishwashing.
@600v_DC Anyone who thinks this Aussie has a laidback attitude hasn't seen my precision packing of the DW's cutlery basket. 😉😄
@600v_DC I used to work at @choiceaustralia and I can guarantee you that the NATA-accredited dishwasher testing lab would have referred to this standard in their dishwasher testing protocols. Those cats don’t fuck around.
@600v_DC Tried moving the cutlery basket in the dishwasher as per this. I can advise, anecdotally based on a few test runs, that it seems to wash cutlery better now.👌 Standards. Who knew.
