Followgraph for Mastodon

Find people to follow on Mastodon by expanding your follow graph.

@gabipurcaru this is awesome, thanks for putting it together
@gabipurcaru This is super cool. I was initially confused why it wouldn't work for me, until I remembered that I had checked the "Hide my social graph" option in the settings. Maybe one more line for your FAQ?
@gabipurcaru Thanks for making this. Really useful!
Just a suggestion: it would be handy to have a link to each user's profile on their home instance, so you can browse their posts before deciding whether to follow them.
@Yirba @gabipurcaru +1 for this suggestion.
The tool is great. Would be cool to have it in mastodon natively.
@gabipurcaru
This #follow tool is very easy to use, with good results, thank you Gabi!
@gabipurcaru I really like this idea, but it mostly suggests people I am already following. Maybe because it can't load the complete list of my 3.7k follows?
@gabipurcaru nice tool but uh is the graphic of people you're using supposed to be nice or is it intentionally terrifying 'AI' art?
@birlocke_ @gabipurcaru it looks nice as long as you don't zoom in ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@gabipurcaru This is pretty cool!

A little weirdness: it doesn't find me at [email protected], but does find me at [email protected]

I think that's likely because it doesn't traverse webfinger across redirects to WEB_DOMAIN as per: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#web_domain

(Or I'm confused and don't understand how webfinger is meant to work...)

Configuring your environment - Mastodon documentation

Setting environment variables for your Mastodon installation.

@rhys @gabipurcaru Had to do the same thing for my server as well, since I host on a different domain than my account name. Minor annoyance, but would be great if it worked with the WEB_DOMAINs.
@gabipurcaru out of interest, I tried it but it doesn't recognise my address

this in turn probably means I wonโ€™t show up in the results of other people trying it
@gabipurcaru Great idea. A very good working discoverability feature is following hashtags.
@gabipurcaru Instantly useful. Thank you.
@gabipurcaru this is awesome! Itโ€™s going to take me a while to follow everyone I found, but this was very helpful. Thank you!
@gabipurcaru Put of curiosity, did you use AI to generate the promo art on the homepage of your app?
@gabipurcaru This is extraordinarily useful
@gabipurcaru The lack of discoverbility is a feature, not a fault. We work to protect the vulnerable among us and provide a safe place for everybody. So we make it easy for people who want to hide, for instance from violent spouses or racists and neo-Nazis, to do so. That is why you cannot search by name or text outside your instance. The only search is by #hashtag. So if you want to be found, add #hashtages to your tweets.

@BertL thanks for the feedback!

I looked into this, and I see that Mastodon allows people to explicitly opt out of being discovered by setting a flag on their profile ("Suggest account to others").

#followgraph honours this flag and hides people who don't want to be discovered.

@gabipurcaru Iโ€™m getting no results. Is that because of a setting? I checked and believe my lists are public.

@gabipurcaru this is pretty cool.

1) I wish there was an easy way to save it send it

2) second wish - post/boost/reply stats is this person merely sharing out are they generating content

3) third wish - the warnings looked like an interesting tool all in itself, possibly pruning dead follows?

@scerruti @gabipurcaru The warnings are not useful for that, as whole servers are missed (qoto.org for example). So they can be false negatives.
@gabipurcaru This is fantastic, found dozens of great follows in minutes.
@gabipurcaru it would also be very cool to see the inverse: who follows the people who follow you but donโ€™t follow you?
@gabipurcaru Oh this is a cool tool! Thank you.
@gabipurcaru Thanks a lot. I wonder if anyone is working on adding such data to an graph database such as an #RDF triple store.
@gabipurcaru That's super helpful. The platform definitely needs to integrate something like this.
@gabipurcaru this is super helpful. Thank you!!
@gabipurcaru, this sounds like a great idea! I guess itโ€™s a basic version of PYMK! I tried to use it and it didnโ€™t work though, from the very quick response, I assume it couldnโ€™t get any information re: my account or something like that.
@gabipurcaru This is so cool. Thanks, Gabi!
@gabipurcaru great idea. Does it work for all servers? I seem to be getting no results, not sure why
@gabipurcaru This is great! Found some people that birdapp migration tools didn't pick up on.
@gabipurcaru
This is great, thank you!
@gabipurcaru I love the idea of this but canny figure out why it doesnโ€™t work when I put in my full handle.
@gabipurcaru I thought I've already found lots of previous connections here, and yet your tool allowed me to discover a bunch more, plus awesome new people! Thanks a lot ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
@gabipurcaru I canโ€™t get it to work. Could it be an issue with Hometown?

@gabipurcaru this is a great tool, thank you for it!

Using it on mobile I see how much friction there is in cross-server following on Mastodon.

Every time I tap "follow" I had to copy /rewrite the handle from server/handle format & paste back into Tusky / search until I started copying the handle text from the app & pasting /searching in Tusky that way.

A button to load a handle to clipboard or a way to redirect to the searcher's server w/ search prefilled might help a lot.

@gabipurcaru Excellent tool. I've added a bunch of new people that I know and have seen but missed following them. Thank you. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘
@gabipurcaru what a great tool.. thanks for that
@gabipurcaru mastodon only for now it seems. I wonder what it needs to support misskey and calckey
@gabipurcaru Wow this is great! I got lots of really high quality suggestions through this! A bunch of people I used to follow on twitter as well but movetodon.org somehow missed! So thank you for that! ๐Ÿ™
@gabipurcaru @dox Really found this useful and unobtrusive, thank you!
@gabipurcaru
Somehow it doesn't work for my handle even though i have the "hide your social graph" option disabled.
@gabipurcaru Wow! This is great! Thank you for immediately introducing me to everybody I wanted to know!
@gabipurcaru Love the avoidance of csv download and other automation traps. Wish the ranking algorithm were a little more transparent and configurable by the user.
@gabipurcaru It worked great, and I found interesting people to follow. Thanks!

@gabipurcaru There is nothing in this list yet. When members of this list publish new posts, they will appear here.

What struck me about my specific results was that they all had large followings.

Is there a bottom cut-off? I find this problematic in that I want to create a *peer* base here, and am DELIBERATELY AVOIDING FOLLOWING ORGS with paid social media reps and prolific RTers.

How about mining the next level? And including filters for max / min followers?

Followgraph for Mastodon

Find people to follow on Mastodon by expanding your follow graph.

@gabipurcaru is there a way to use this even if you have your followers hidden on your profile?
@sc no; Followgraph does not use and doesn't plan to use any data that is not already public.
@gabipurcaru i confirm just in case that it seems to not work on hometown
This is great to see a list of people who have interacted with you on Mastadon, and their bios. followgraph.vercel.app/ However I followed several people then got a notification that it was 'rate limited' and try again in a minute. Is there a limit to following new people on this server?
