You no longer fully own the movie you bought, your next car will not work 100% even though you bought it if you don't keep paying, your smartphone is not fully yours since you are not free to repair it even though you own it, your home devices "betray you" by sharing data with companies even though you have welcomed them into your home...

I'm sick to death of this technological modernity.

@alejandrobdn SAME.

As a sidebar, #MST3k and #RiffTrax both sell their movies DRM-free, meaning YOU own them for as long as you want. One of the few places that does.

@Bullix @alejandrobdn A very good point! That doesn't excuse you for being so elusive
@70sgayspaceangel @alejandrobdn
What can I say? I'm just sad because I'll never be half the mellow turkey that Ben Murphy is :)
@alejandrobdn We really need some rebellious start-ups to offer hackable moddable open design smart phones and other items.

@alejandrobdn The Philips Momentum screen seems to be a breeze of fresh air for a living room display.

Hopefully #LinuxMobile will continue progressing in the mobile space. Still lots of work before it's ready for the mainstream.

@alejandrobdn I don't understand any of yr examples except the appliances one but I don't welcome them into My home. Are you thinking of Rosie on the jetsons?

@alejandrobdn the best we can do for this point is buy DRM free media such as games from GOG.com and if that's not possible, pirate them.

For smartphone, Fairphone with CalyxOS.
For smart devices, raspberry pis (or equivalent) with open source software.
For cars, I have no clue but I would think mahbe a repairable second hand.

It's not ideal and we definitely should be able opt out but for anyone who is in despair, there are alternatives!

@alejandrobdn for the phone thing, I recommend #fairphone @Fairphone -- I know they're not US focused, but they do a fabulous job with repair-ability!

[I'm in the UK] - Love my Fairphone 4 & that I can take it apart with a single screwdriver, and replace all the bits & bobs inside. Oh, they do things like fair-trade gold too.

A great product & a groovy company ❀️

@alejandrobdn
Get a #fairphone next time you buy a phone, and degoogle it if you can.

@alejandrobdn And fully functional hardware gets EOL'd because it has to stay connected and the vendor can't be bothered with updates any longer.

Looking at you Sonos, Unifi, Clavister et al.

@alejandrobdn fight modernity, pirate everything, jail break it all, set up your home server and don’t use services that require a monthly fee.

@alejandrobdn You should vote with your money. Don't buy a Google/Apple required phone. Don't buy smart home devices that are cloud connected. Ask your colleagues and family to do the same. I am slowly learning to do this myself, and it is a bit of a struggle.

Sure, it will be less convenient. It will be more expensive. But that is what it costs.

@alejandrobdn It's not the technology, it's the economic system we've permitted to be built around us.
And I honestly wouldn't mind not "owning" a lot of things, if only it weren't the case that a relatively few people on this planet own fucking everything, and make the rest suffer for it.
@alejandrobdn
I follow a "nothing that i don't fully own will ever enter my home" policy. This gets increasingly difficult.
@nobilor
@alejandrobdn the worst part for me is: trying to find/use alternatives makes me feel it's somehow criminal
@alejandrobdn you say that like it’s a bad thing
