I hear a lot of White people in Britain saying that UK doesn’t have the kind of racism that America has. They might want to talk with Black and Brown Britons before making that determination.

“More than 2 in 5 Black, Brown & minority workers in the UK say they have faced racism on the job. Racist incidents included racist jokes, being subjected to stereotyping/comments about appearance, racist remarks, or outright bullying & harassment. ”

@Deglassco Yes, that's true. UK racism is its own thing. See Enoch Powell, Rivers of Blood; Paki-bashing among skinheads; and the entire British Empire.
@Mokurai Agreed. Although he probably doesn’t know who Powell was, many of Trump’s tactics were right out of Powell’s playbook.

@Deglassco White Britain has a long tradition of brushing things under the carpet or attempting to make them more 'palatable'. British slavery could be effectively erased from history as it happened thousands of miles away in the Caribbean, rather than on our shores.

Look at what's happening now with Megan Markle being utterly persecuted, but so many denying it's about race. Just one example of many.

@cathitza Agree that Britain abolished slavery decades before America and pressured others to do so. But that doesn’t mean racism still doesn’t exist. Brexit was all about racism. And as you say, the reaction to Meghan Markle is way exaggerated relative to what she and her husband are accused of doing.
@Deglassco 100%. And the abolition wasn't exactly what people are often taught. British-owned slaves still had to carry on working for decades after the 'abolition'. And at the time, Britain used 40% of its national budget to compensate slave-owners - nothing went to the slaves. British taxpayers like me were unknowingly still contributing to this until it was paid off in 2015. This only came to light a few years ago. The scale and ramifications of British slavery are still being uncovered.
@Deglassco
The micro-aggressions… they can be very subtle but they’re constant! Some people, especially older folks don’t even recognize them, but as the study shows, as people get younger in the study, the level of racist incidents goes up meaning that younger people recognize them more often than older people.
@nathaliaassaad Exactly. That’s what I see as well. You know, the United States basically shows its dysfunction out loud. But institutional racism (which we do have) and those micro aggressions that you mention and those covert racist activities point towards a deeper, foundational problem.
@Deglassco it’s definitely prevalent here. It’s a daily assault of micro aggressions, covert and overt racism on a daily. The racist here just think they’re smart by keeping it polite.
@SamYoung841 I used to say that it was better for racists to show their hand but after Trump, I’m not so sure that’s a good thing.
@Deglassco the problem was he was the President of the US. That legitimised racism in a way that Bob down the road just couldn’t on his own.
@Deglassco Whoever said that clearly lives in a very small box. I remember hearing racism uttered as casually as describing the weather, back in the 80's and 90's. Seeing the political landscape over the last 20 years, it's clear the issue has, in many cases, gotten far, far worse.
@TacticalGrace_ and continues to get worse. There was a period of time where politicians and others would only go so far with the overt racism. Those days are over.
