Some inconvenient facts about immigrants that MAGAs hope you ignore:

•Seeking asylum is a legal & human RIGHT, protected by the US Constitution and the UN Convention on Refugees (to which the USA is a signatory)

•Both documented AND undocumented immigrants have LOWER crime rates than US Citizens (and usually higher vaccination rates too)

•Undocumented immigrants pay MORE in taxes ($12B annually) than Trump ever has or will (and get none of the tax benefits)

RT if you learned something new!

@QasimRashid boosted because I know that stuff and just had this conversation with a neighbor an hour ago
@QasimRashid might want to add that any treaty we signed also becomes the law of the land but I'm not an attorney or whatever just a high school diploma down here trying to make sure the fascists aren't in charge
@Gilda Yep once we sign and ratify a treaty, it is absolutely law of the land. And we have signed and ratified the UN Treaty on Refugees
@QasimRashid I had to go double check myself 😊

@QasimRashid

"Treaties are binding agreements between nations and become part of international law. Treaties to which the United States is a party also have the force of federal legislation, forming part of what the Constitution calls ''the supreme Law of the Land.''

https://www.senate.gov/about/powers-procedures/treaties.htm#:~:text=Treaties%20are%20binding%20agreements%20between,Senate%20does%20not%20ratify%20treaties

U.S. Senate: About Treaties

@Gilda @QasimRashid Well, history demonstrates that treaties and "international law" work as well as the US balance of powers. It only takes one to stop acting as a gentleman and all falls apart. And it takes years to rebuild.
@QasimRashid I'm the daughter of immigrants and I love that I have history and relatives in other parts of the world.

@QasimRashid All true. The self-destructive behavior of Republicans truly astonishes me.

Latino immigrants are extremely diligent and eager about paying their taxes, buying a home, paying property tax, etc. Unlike most USians, who complain and avoid taxes as much as they can.

On the other hand, it's all about power. Republican politicians know that a large segment of the population responds strongly to xenophobia and hate, so that's what they push in the hope of taking over.

@shuttersparks @QasimRashid True. And many businesses rely on immigrant labor, including human-rights-abusing bosses of illegal immigrants.

CEOs and factory farms are all too happy to profit from the cheap immigrant labor—jobs that entitled white people don’t want—while donating disproportionately to anti-immigrant (and anti-union, anti-environment, anti-science, anti-education, anti-women, xenophobic, antisemitic, anti-democracy) GOP candidates.

Wave that flag!

@QasimRashid @shuttersparks clarification: I edited my initial response, adding “bosses of.” Without that, my original wording incorrectly implicates the immigrants, not the real abusers of human rights
@QasimRashid
I knew all that already but I'm boosting it anyway, in case it lands were it needs to ☺️
@QasimRashid I already knew this but others do not seem to know
@QasimRashid another inconvenient fact about immigrants / refugees that maga want everyone to forget is that the majority of maga believers are themselves the descendants of immigrants / refugees.
@itslifejimbutnotasweknowit
Unless they are 100% First People they are ALL descendents of immigrants, the majority of whom would have been refugees had the definition existed.
@itslifejimbutnotasweknowit @QasimRashid I’ve always wondered. How many generations before a population becomes indigenous? Because all people are descendants of immigrants if you go back far enough.

@beowuff @QasimRashid

I've wondered that too.

I'm not sure what others think about this question, but it seems to me that to not recognise a person born to parents who were born in a country as indigenous seems a little arbitrary, maybe even elitist, if everyone is descended from immigrants / refugees.

But I do believe some sort of distinction needs to be made between later colonisers of a country (and their descendants) and the indigenous inhabitants (those in the country before the later colonisers arrived) even if just for the sake of seeking to recognise and undo the damage done by the later colonisers to the indigenous inhabitants.

As far as the maga stance on immigration / refugees, though, if everyone ('indigenous' or not) is essentially an immigrant / refugee or the descendant of an immigrant / refugee, then that just makes the maga stance all the more absurd!

@QasimRashid My wife is a volunteer ESL teacher, so we know several US immigrants, mostly (but not all) Hispanic. They are incredible people.
@BertL bless her. ❤️ Please give her my gratitude. I still fondly remember my ESL teacher Mrs. Voss, and miss her immensely. She was an incredible person who had a deeply positive impact on me.

@QasimRashid

Didn't learn something new, but boosting anyway, bc it bears repeating

@QasimRashid Didn't learn anything I didn't already know, but "boosted" because it's important that everyone should know.
@QasimRashid trump loves America so much that he pays no taxes to fund anything in America 😂😂
They have better family values than those on the right and contribute way more to society as well! That’s what offends them the most. Thanks for the facts!
@QasimRashid Thank you! There are so many people out there who don’t know or have a clue about any of these facts.

@QasimRashid I always have to educate people on the taxes thing. I've had so many people repeat that to me over and over and I'm starting to lose patience on it. THEY PAY TAXES. And they don't even get to vote. Undocumented immigrants give this country SO much and get so little in return.

Conservatives, on the other hand, take and take and take and give nothing in return. They're absolute grinches.

@Okramonk @QasimRashid you are so right. I lived as an undocumented immigrant (even though my mom, dad and older brother were US citizens) for 8 years. One employer didn’t pay 3 months of my salary and told me to go complain, if I dared! It took 8 years to become a legal citizen. 8 years of hardship and abuse.
@QasimRashid I also booted because I want others to learn something new. Thank you @QasimRashid for continuing to counter the false narratives that have taken hold. If we don’t counter false narratives with truth then false narratives become the truth.

@QasimRashid Not that I really care about any of this, but your third point doesn't really make sense, nor prove anything.
A bunch of people together pay more taxes than one man... either you provide an income comparison or that single information is pretty much meaningless.

Frankly I'm a bit confused: I'm not American so I really don't know how this works.
How can undocumented immigrants pay taxes? I would imagine that since they have no documents they would not be allowed to pay taxes to the government.
Are you referring to VAT or is it actually possible for people that are not allowed to be there to pay taxes? Why would they even pay the taxes?

@rastinza @QasimRashid I'm pretty sure that people who don't live here legally often use a made-up social security number and pay taxes on their income (deducted from their pay). Then an actual return is never filed using that SSN, so the taxes are forfeit. Also, gas and sales taxes are paid by everyone spending money in this society.

@NoTwit @QasimRashid
This looks extremely strange to me, how can you just make up a social security number? When you go to pay taxes it would be clear such number is not associated with anyone.
I guess you may impersonate someone else who is American, in that case you'd use his SSN and pay taxes for him; this only works unless that guy decides to start working and in this case taxes are not forfeit as that guy will receive social security benefits. Taxes will be forfeit if this American is dead but his death was not declared; but I can't believe this is very common.

What I don't understand is why would they go through all these complications to pay taxes, you could just work illegally at that point and pay no taxes. I guess the only point for paying taxes is getting a job with a contract; but that's pretty much useless to you since the contract would be invalid. I guess you'd only do this if you cannot find a job without a contract or if jobs with the contract pay considerably more.

Sure, they'll be paying VAT, but that's not really what we think about when we're talking about taxes.

What I'm asking to @QasimRashid is basically this: I know nothing about these things but something seems off.
How do you know these things and how does it make sense?

@QasimRashid do you have sources for statement 2+3? I would like to dig deeper.
@QasimRashid you make me wish I had gone to law school when I had the chance!
@QasimRashid Republicans want to ban all immigrants. Democrats don’t. With a 50/50 congress, only executive actions can succeed. And then only temporarily.
@QasimRashid People believe what they want to believe in order to make sense of what they see when they look at their lives and their world. If the evidence shows them to be wrong, they will ignore the evidence. I honestly don't know how to get around that.
@QasimRashid No one is hoping that you "ignore" anything. They are hoping that you believe disinformation. Xenophobia - fear - motivates voters to come to the polls; debunking fears does not. Without mandatory voting, fear is a powerful tool to sway elections. (With it, fear is still influential, but less so because turnout is not a factor.)

@QasimRashid those are convenient facts about immigrants. Sadly a far broader than MAGA (including outside US) constituency wishes to believe and act otherwise.

Here's a moral fact: migration restrictions, including limitations on right to work, constitute international apartheid, and abolition is called for https://www.apartheid-international.org/manifesto-abolition-international-apartheid.html

@QasimRashid As far as I know, asylum is one of the sources that feeds the modern state. Initially religiously motivated, state institutions later intervened in a society characterised by blood feuds and constituted their claim to power through it: we determine who is judged and how.

Whoever sees himself as Christian and upholds a strong state must perceive asylum as his noblest duty.

@QasimRashid Didn't know about the vaccination rates but I'm not surprised.

Either way, Greg Abbott deserves to sit on Legos for a week straight

@QasimRashid Thank You. That's interesting information and sounds correct to me, but MAGAs will doubt it, so it would be useful if you provided cites for the second & third facts. It helps us have better conversations when we aren't just lobbing assertions back & forth without sources.
@QasimRashid Mm. Yes to all the above, but this is a *rational* response to deception. People who are knowingly deceiving perfectly well know what you're saying - it's not a matter of truth, or correctness - it's a matter of people, lying, deliberately, and that's the behaviour which is in hand. The supposed issues are irrelevant.

@QasimRashid

I do believe the Democrats forget too. I remember how many walking migrants have been turned back, how many Haitians were lassoed--by Democrat-led institutions. Too many rage against one side of the machine, when both are a big problem.

@QasimRashid Of course, the US has never complied with the UN Refugee Convention, which is why it's often excluded from lists of 'safe third countries', and under the Trump-Biden refugee refoulement policy, the country has reached a new level of open contempt for international refugee law.
@QasimRashid Wait, I'm a little confused. How can undocumented migrants pay taxes? If they are undocumented migrants, it surely means that they don't have valid papers to work/live in the country, right? Are you saying they pay taxes through third parties? How are they attributed without any valid ID to attach (SSN/NI/any other national identity)?

@QasimRashid For the record, I'm not in the USA. So I don't know how it works there. And, my points were only about taxes on income.

From my experience living in a couple countries, you NEED a valid national identity along with a valid work permit (of course) to be able to pay taxes.

@QasimRashid @dgoldsmith Americans really have astoundingly short generational memories. Every single person in America, excluding the original peoples, is either an immigrant or is descended from immigrants, refugees, and slaves.

America’s culture IS immigration, but we have decided to adopt unfettered capitalism in its place. Those who are against immigrants are denying their own cultural history in favor of capitalism’s “fuck you, I got mine” mentality.

@QasimRashid everybody needs to read all of this and boost.
