I don’t drink much anymore because my body doesn’t like me when I do.

I love great wine though. If you appreciate wine and you understand what makes a good wine, and you have the palate to really taste the complexities — wine is wonderful.

But when you don’t feel good after, you might ignore that for a while — maybe even for years, but you become increasingly sensitive to it and bothered in smaller increments.

And this is where I am these days. #alcohol

Earlier this week I made homemade Irish cream. Boy, was it yummy! But not only was it loaded with whiskey, it was also packed with sugar.

So my body was reacting even more.

This morning, I got up and dumped the other half out.

And I’m so proud. I still plan to drink wine tonight, but to choose to get rid of the one I love because it’s bothering me so much more, that’s not something I ever would have done a couple years ago. Good for me. #alcohol

And yes, I’ll have wine tonight! I bought a red wine for earlier last week, and have a white for tonight and a rose bubbly for New Year’s. Then I’ll go back to seldom boozing.

It brings my bottles of wine consumed in 2022 to maybe 15 or so.

Down from about 350 in 2019. Progress! 😂 #alcohol

@snarkysteff Good on ya, Steff.
@voevolution Thanks, George. Hope you are doing much better this Christmas.

@snarkysteff I've mostly traded alcohol for cannabis and the odd craft beer. But I still love champagne, and we went to a Michelin star place for a tasting menu the other night and the sommelier did not disappoint with wine suggestions all around.

I just like stopping before I wind up being in a state I'll regret the next day. It isn't remotely worth it. Never really has been.

@NickTheSkydiver yeah, I smoke weed for sure. No problems with having vices but they have to be vices that don’t have a net negative effect like alcohol always has these days. I’d love to be able to have a glass a day and pay no price for it but my body doesn’t work that way these days. It is what it is. Maybe one day. We go through phases, so you never know.
@snarkysteff Yeah. I don't tolerate it well and don't miss it most of the time.

@NickTheSkydiver yeah, it’s harder to pass on it at Christmas but this is the year I’ve drank the least in my life since I was 17!

Pretty sweet. I’ll behave again next week, but I’m looking forward to it rather than dreading it, like I used to. Feeling better is a good thing.

@snarkysteff I've never ever developed a liking for the taste of alcohol (Poor me? Nah. I find it vile. Yes, I can still taste it in all kinds of drinks.) but I cook with it like nobody's business. A glug of good red wine (even a tablespoon) makes difference between "this gravy is okay" and "this gravy came out of a can but IDEC anymore because it tastes amazing."

It's a useful ingredient, since the alcohol cooks off (for those who are sensitive/averse) but adds a depth you can't match otherwise. Unless you go the soy sauce/MSG route, which is a different flavour profile, so.
