#72pencils arranged into four intersecting hexagonal prisms. Took me a bit to figure out how to assemble it after seeing a picture. Original design by mathematician/sculptor George Hart. #Geometry #Pencil
Here's a link to the original artist of the #72pencils #sculpture, the mathematician George W. Hart, he has MANY more! #Geometry

72 Pencils

@repepo Look, we’re twins! Super cool and the uniformity of the pencil erasers is really satisfying to look at.
@repepo Neat! Is there anything holding together beyond gravity?
@nmichalo there is glue on pencils forming some of the hexagons’ edges, those are the only ones that need to be kept in place.

@repepo

Nice original work, but could you repeat the study with each row of pencils in red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and violet?

@repepo
I made one of these 5 years ago (almost to the day!). Yes, a great combination of frustration and satisfaction :)

@repepo do the corner pencils have to be glued or does it hold together?
@repepo
Iets voor de kerstdagen😜

Matt Parker aka Stand-up Maths made a movie about it too:

@repepo @Poldermanie Too bad I haven't got enough pencils to try this ... ✏️ ✏️ ✏️ ✏️ ✏️ ✏️ ✏️ ✏️
@repepo I want to try this now
@repepo A good puzzle - one to ponder over a coffee! Looks good!
@jillithd @repepo ha, very nice, and very where my head has been lately with 3D interlacing notions
@repepo
Lovely, and fascinating.
You may be familiar with the “Leaded” exhibition. It was memorable.

@repepo - Your post solves one of my Christmas gift woes this year. Thank you very much.
@repepo wow, how long did it take to assemble? I would have one behind my ear, one in my mouth to stop from screaming, one stabbed into the couch cushion and the rest would likely be on fire :-) I admire your patience.
@repepo Wow, impressive geometry and craftsmanship 👍👍
@repepo wow that's so cool.

@repepo Cool! I started making those as a pandemic project when I wasn't going out much. Some variants I experimented with:

“Removing 13 pencils allowed me to slip the tennis ball inside; it's slightly smaller than the hollow and so just fits! Here it is all sealed up, illuminated with UV, trapped inside its pencil prison ;)”

@repepo well aren’t you talented. That is an amazing feat, well done.
@repepo Easiest way would probably be to make a jig for each of the 4 prisms then just slide them together
Hexastix - Wikipedia

@Althea_syriacus @repepo I made this out of round toothpicks and silicone hair bands in November 2014. This was the maximum size before the bands started slipping off the tapered ends. I started with the level of model in the article, then grew it by sliding in toothpicks. Then once it was at full size, I slid out the inner toothpicks.
@repepo Reciprocal framing at its best!
