The irony of people on mastodon piling on a Twitter person asking for a feature because it would make mastodon more hostile is not lost on me. I hope they can see it too.

@sfoskett this is normal when two cultures collide . Especially when one is the guest of another because their own culture self destructed. At least there aren't hot takes being quote tweeted and fanning the flames

Mastodon for Android but it's pink and has more features

@justinionn @hobs @sfoskett Good! Now people that want "quote-toots," or whatever we end up calling them, can have them. They can stop harassing developers now.

@hobs @sfoskett A "guest"?

This is exactly why I call this place a walled-off garden party. You all just can't help being gatekeepers.

@Homebrewandhacking @hobs @sfoskett Sure, you can knock something together to qrt (I have with screenshots, copy/paste, and links), but the problem is that it's time consuming, not the easiest, and not ideal.

You all seem to forget that *Twitter* didn't always have qrts and implemented them after users made their own.

@audleyzdarke @hobs @sfoskett

Yeah that's a rude way to put it.

Mastodon.ie didn't exist before Irish Twitter decided to say "Fuck Elon Musk in his ugly fucking ear he can die in a fire. We're out of here." I'm definitely a guest there but to imply I'm a guest on a server I'm not on? Quite a lot of a reach to be honest. 😀

But I do like accessibility culture and privacy controls and content warnings. Those are cool!

@audleyzdarke @hobs @sfoskett Immaturity isn't a badge of honor.

If you go to a garden party and start loudly demanding that they serve you vodka shots, play death metal music and clear space for an "awesome" mosh pit, it shouldn't really surprise you that you're met with hostility.

Even if your suggestions would make things better (in your eyes), and even if some at the party would enjoy that more, it's still anti-social behavior.

@tob @hobs @sfoskett Just say you don't want Twitter users here and save yourself some characters.
@tob @hobs @sfoskett Also, lol, I've been here LONGER, Jesus.
@audleyzdarke @hobs @sfoskett Almost like you made assumptions that didn't hold true but still dismiss what I'm saying regardless.
@tob @audleyzdarke @hobs @sfoskett sure but Tom respectfully I think we all know death metal makes everything better
@tob @audleyzdarke @hobs @sfoskett you're not a refugee, nobody hounded you out of home, also – you're pretty new here. you're bloody disgusting.
@sfoskett @audleyzdarke @hobs Not everyone here behaves like the gate-police. Some are just adjusting to the sudden growth, and some new-comers are, naturally, pushing for changes. I like the idea of an opt-in quote tweet choice. Meanwhile, I mute or block the #CW extremists and those others who violate boundaries and demand that new users do this or that. #TwitterMigration #ChangeHappens #QuoteTootPlease #QuoteToot

@Wtime90 @sfoskett @hobs There have been some really lovely people who have been patient with my n00b questions and been welcoming.

But, as I have said elsewhere, in all of my 11 years on Twitter (and all of my social media experience going back to LJ), I have NEVER been told I am unwelcome or that my presence is ruining the space. That has happened here.

@Wtime90 @sfoskett @hobs Even Tumblr has been warmer.
@hobs @audleyzdarke @sfoskett In a purely metaphorical way, this experience feels similar to what relocated refugees must sometimes feel. Many citizens, once new arrivals, are kind and welcoming, but others are unwelcoming or alarmed. Unlike RL, we all can mute or block those who offend. 😊 #TwitterMigration

@audleyzdarke @Wtime90 @sfoskett @hobs Not to me. The folks over there have been quite open about running Twitter refugees off the platform. It worked on me; I don't want to be associated with it. And if this turns into that, I'll be outta here as well -- life's too short for such drama.

What's wild: I find YouTube the most easygoing of social-media spaces. IDK if it depends more on the videos one watches and the audiences they attract, or if YT has actually gotten rid of a lot of trolls.

@audleyzdarke @jarocats @sfoskett @hobs Would you happen to know why a globe shows up on your post, but no one else’s posts have one? I’m still sorting out “home, local, and federation.” Thanks, in advance.
@jarocats @Wtime90 @sfoskett @hobs Okay, that's WILD about YouTube- I would have never thought!
@jarocats God, people suck everywhere.

@audleyzdarke I think it's just that the sucky ones are a lot louder. The trick is tuning them out so you get a better signal-to-noise ratio.

After six years and 12,000+ followers on the dead-bird site, I had more than 60,000 accounts blocked (which I don't think is unreasonable considering the platform's scale). That turned the volume way, waaay down and created a much more enjoyable experience.

Then Space Karen came along and ruined everything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@jarocats My Twitter was really well curated too- I "only" have 1100 or so followers, but I'm not afraid of a good ol block.
@Wtime90 @audleyzdarke @sfoskett @hobs @jarocats on tumblr it’s way more tongue-in-cheek (“look how cringey we are!! betcha don’t want to come back now do you?”) whereas some people on here seem genuinely opposed to the idea of new people joining. it’s even weirder when they’re new to the platform themselves and trying to portray themselves as experts.

@leonidas @Wtime90 @audleyzdarke @sfoskett @hobs You said it. It's like the person who moves into town and immediately starts writing LTTEs about what needs to change (and then runs for city council in six months).

Have you ever seen the old (1990s) email forward, "The Natural Life Cycle of Mailing Lists"? I've found it applies neatly to every last online group situation, no matter the platform.

I'd say Mastodon in general appears to be in Stage 5, wouldn't you?

Psychology of Cyberspace - Natural Life Cycle of Mailing Lists

@sfoskett @jarocats @audleyzdarke @hobs @Wtime90 yup, nice article! it’s neat to put a name to this kind of phenomenon.
@jarocats @leonidas @Wtime90 @audleyzdarke @sfoskett Very cool. Never seen this 90's wisdom. Seems perfectly apt. And Stage 5 is definitely where we're at. Hope we stay here in the "diversity" stage for a long time. Stack Exchange and Wikipedia have been in Stage 6 for a while. Seems that modern corporate social media platforms push us through the first 4 stages as fast as possible.
@hobs @sfoskett No one is a guest of anyone else here. That's the point, and I'm sorry you haven't grasped it. You're uninvited to happy hour
@sfoskett @hobs Many from the #TwitterMigration are not guests. They are citizens now. Like it or not, change happens. For everyone. #TwitterMigration #QuoteTootPlease
@hobs @sfoskett You can look at it as a collision, or as an opportunity to meld the best of both worlds. I choose the latter -- unless, of course, it's been made clear that the other person refuses to find common ground, right out of the gate. In that case, I give up on that person and move on -- and, while I am deeply flawed and prone to failure despite the best intentions -- I try never to "collide."
@sfoskett If I could QT this and express my heartfelt agreement, I would. But since this group of nerds are as self-righteously opinionated as every other group, I can’t. 🤷‍♂️

@justinionn Thanks. I’m on iOS but maybe that means there’s an iPhone client that does the same thing?
@mikestanley @sfoskett self-righteous nerds having overblown slapfights? Say it ain't so
@mikestanley @sfoskett Your reply doesn't express your heartfelt agreement
@tob @sfoskett I’d like to think it was reasonably implied. Given that the author favorited it, I’m confident he saw it that way. 🤷‍♂️
@sfoskett The people who have been loudest and rudest are those claiming they don't want any harassment here.
@sfoskett @edbott I've seen people disagreeing politely. It's nothing like the hostility I've seen on the other side.
@cpke_sonu @edbott This is certainly true. There have been many positive, friendly, and supportive people saying "no we don't really want that and here's why" and that's the kind of environment I want to surround myself with!

@sfoskett I love irony, it’s my favorite 🤷🏼‍♀️

Tech Field Day

@sfoskett

In all cases, the #mostimportant thing I've learned over the years of managing a couple of large #online #communities is to resist the #temptation to get drawn into #flamewars and to instead remain #focused on the positive.

I may (or may not) agree with the opinions stated, but generally find it more positive to just let these die out rather than fanning the #flames in question. Because not much of it really mattered in the end.

Yeah, I know... ymmv™ but Merry Xmas all the same.

@francoisknyc Well said! And I endorse this position!

@sfoskett I've been on this site for a month and seen this conversation pop up at least half a dozen times.

It's not just redundant, it's that "implement this feature the same way as the birdsite or we're leaving" is exactly the wrong way to talk about it.

What *exactly* do you want to do? Why can't you do it with the tools currently available?

@sfoskett Even more ironic when it is a feature that any client can add without permission from anyone.

Open standards mean you can do that.

@sfoskett Tbh this post itself is too negative and inflammatory for me, and reminds me too much of twitter dunks.
@sfoskett I’m agnostic on the QT debate but her Toot came off as arrogant and that’s probably what set people off.
@sfoskett @kyozou
May I ask what was arrogant about it? I didn’t see it and so have no opinion yet
@sfoskett Interestingly, the “Don’t Change My Culture” censors and the Content Warning extremists are the only trolls that I have had to mute or block. No one else misbehaves here. #TwitterMigration #TheMastodonCensors #QuoteToot #Boundaries
@Wtime90 @sfoskett ‘The Phantom Splainers’, as someone amusingly called them. Knotweed best eliminated with Mute or Block. I’m deaf and I try not to go full Robcop if people fail to remember, as we are all busy spinning our own plates in life.
@sfoskett @blabberlicious I agree. I don’t mute/block all of the them, just the handful that feel too zealous. 😊

@sfoskett I'm not sure why this keeps coming up. It's already been addressed.

This turned out to be a major Twitter feature: being able to inline the text of a retweet while adding your own. It was done by manually copy-pasting the text before a feature was developed. How to...

@sfoskett almost like these people don't think in spectrum and have cold eye for journalists.
@sfoskett Such is humanity. I came over from Twitter. I didn't demand Mastodon act like Twitter. I find the side demanding the change has been uncompromising about it and persistent. I have unfollowed accounts doing this.
@sfoskett I was thinking the same thing. Watching someone be toxic saying they didn’t want this place to turn toxic was very ironic.
@sfoskett This is the mildest piling on I’ve ever seen
@sfoskett One feature of #mastodon I hope never gets implemented is quoting. Quote #tweeting on #Twitter is often done maliciously.
