@sfoskett this is normal when two cultures collide . Especially when one is the guest of another because their own culture self destructed. At least there aren't hot takes being quote tweeted and fanning the flames

And QT exists on Tusky.
@Homebrewandhacking @hobs @sfoskett Sure, you can knock something together to qrt (I have with screenshots, copy/paste, and links), but the problem is that it's time consuming, not the easiest, and not ideal.
You all seem to forget that *Twitter* didn't always have qrts and implemented them after users made their own.
Yeah that's a rude way to put it.
Mastodon.ie didn't exist before Irish Twitter decided to say "Fuck Elon Musk in his ugly fucking ear he can die in a fire. We're out of here." I'm definitely a guest there but to imply I'm a guest on a server I'm not on? Quite a lot of a reach to be honest. 😀
But I do like accessibility culture and privacy controls and content warnings. Those are cool!
@audleyzdarke @hobs @sfoskett Immaturity isn't a badge of honor.
If you go to a garden party and start loudly demanding that they serve you vodka shots, play death metal music and clear space for an "awesome" mosh pit, it shouldn't really surprise you that you're met with hostility.
Even if your suggestions would make things better (in your eyes), and even if some at the party would enjoy that more, it's still anti-social behavior.
@Wtime90 @sfoskett @hobs There have been some really lovely people who have been patient with my n00b questions and been welcoming.
But, as I have said elsewhere, in all of my 11 years on Twitter (and all of my social media experience going back to LJ), I have NEVER been told I am unwelcome or that my presence is ruining the space. That has happened here.
@audleyzdarke @Wtime90 @sfoskett @hobs Not to me. The folks over there have been quite open about running Twitter refugees off the platform. It worked on me; I don't want to be associated with it. And if this turns into that, I'll be outta here as well -- life's too short for such drama.
What's wild: I find YouTube the most easygoing of social-media spaces. IDK if it depends more on the videos one watches and the audiences they attract, or if YT has actually gotten rid of a lot of trolls.
@audleyzdarke I think it's just that the sucky ones are a lot louder. The trick is tuning them out so you get a better signal-to-noise ratio.
After six years and 12,000+ followers on the dead-bird site, I had more than 60,000 accounts blocked (which I don't think is unreasonable considering the platform's scale). That turned the volume way, waaay down and created a much more enjoyable experience.
Then Space Karen came along and ruined everything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@leonidas @Wtime90 @audleyzdarke @sfoskett @hobs You said it. It's like the person who moves into town and immediately starts writing LTTEs about what needs to change (and then runs for city council in six months).
Have you ever seen the old (1990s) email forward, "The Natural Life Cycle of Mailing Lists"? I've found it applies neatly to every last online group situation, no matter the platform.
I'd say Mastodon in general appears to be in Stage 5, wouldn't you?

@sfoskett I love irony, it’s my favorite 🤷🏼♀️
The irony of people on mastodon piling on a Twitter person asking for a feature because it would make mastodon more hostile is not lost on me. I hope they can see it too.
In all cases, the #mostimportant thing I've learned over the years of managing a couple of large #online #communities is to resist the #temptation to get drawn into #flamewars and to instead remain #focused on the positive.
I may (or may not) agree with the opinions stated, but generally find it more positive to just let these die out rather than fanning the #flames in question. Because not much of it really mattered in the end.
Yeah, I know... ymmv™ but Merry Xmas all the same.
@sfoskett I've been on this site for a month and seen this conversation pop up at least half a dozen times.
It's not just redundant, it's that "implement this feature the same way as the birdsite or we're leaving" is exactly the wrong way to talk about it.
What *exactly* do you want to do? Why can't you do it with the tools currently available?
@sfoskett Even more ironic when it is a feature that any client can add without permission from anyone.
Open standards mean you can do that.
@sfoskett I'm not sure why this keeps coming up. It's already been addressed.
