NEW: Twitter is shutting down its data center in Sacramento and downsizing another in Atlanta by early Jan, likely as a cost saving measure. This means a huge amount of traffic will be shifted to its remaining data centers, which could result in increased instability.
@zoeschiffer oh this is going to get even more interesting...
@zoeschiffer People on the political left are still using Twitter, meaning we need to throttle that data - so says the fascist king who bought it.
@zoeschiffer good thing less ppl are using #Twitter it will save Elmo money

@zoeschiffer I’m loving sitting back and watching this twitter ship 🚢 sink in slow motion. It’s exhilarating. 🐣🪦

I’m comfortable watching it from afar, too. What I gather from mastodon daily is the perfect amount. 💕 🥰

@NEPTOON @zoeschiffer
It's a new movie called #Twittertanic a cruise ship called the Blue Bird and an unstable captain who spends all his time ripping apart the engine and stabbing holes in the floor of the ship. 🚢

@Sector9 @NEPTOON @zoeschiffer

The only problem is we're watching all this happen from the vantage point of one of the lifeboats which is already at capacity

@bornach @NEPTOON @zoeschiffer Yes but we have champagne 🍾 and popcorn 🍿 and good company.
@zoeschiffer Oh good, it keeps getting worse.
@zoeschiffer How haven't they publicly disclosed any breach yet ?

@zoeschiffer

Nothing says growth like shutting down datacenters!

@transitory @zoeschiffer He will run Twitter on the excess computing power left in all the unsold Tesla's Huge farms of Tesla all connected by CAT6A that he got a great price on buying from Aliexpress, but it will all turn out to be CAT3 cable with flammable insulation that outgases cyanide when exposed to UV or heat.
@zoeschiffer Do they have competent engineers left that are able to perform that migration??
@zoeschiffer Ok so he is gonna move them all to Texas with an unstable 3rd world condition power grid? Boss move.
@Teufelwolf666 @zoeschiffer I assume that is his plan with not paying rent. Wait till the building owner kicks them out and go “woe is me! My company has no home! We must move to Texas to get away from evil lib building owners who are attacking me for my politics” or some other Bs.
@Danielsand @zoeschiffer Failure to pay debts is moral turpitude which is grounds to strip someone of their security clearance.

@zoeschiffer

So Twitter will have two single points of failure: the data center and the CEO.

@zoeschiffer And that will probably result in a lot of traffic to here.
@zoeschiffer 800MM request let second is going to backup center...
@zoeschiffer remaining data centers plural? I thought after Sacramento and Atlanta, they only have Portland?
@zoeschiffer
People keep fantasizing about #Twitter dying on its own, so that they can avoid withdrawal symptoms for their addictions until the last minute.
Twitter will not die until non-fascist users actually stop using it.
Pretending it's going to just fall off the internet in any meaningful way is just prolonging its life.
What do you think is going to happen with this server thing? It might go down for ~6hrs and we all high five while elon keeps pocketing cash from you still being there.

Attached: 1 image If you are upset or not dealing well with your #Mastodon server being down, a quick reminder that in the first years of the bird site, we had regularly this image of a whale when their server was down. #Twitter #twittermigration

@zoeschiffer it’s good that we no need data centers here.
@zoeschiffer I am celebrating the downward spiral of Twitter. This is a net positive to ending corporate control of speech.
@zoeschiffer @drewharwell if they even know how to decommission a DC properly!
@zoeschiffer The House of Birds are already in free fall…
@zoeschiffer All according to plan.
@zoeschiffer I wonder how much of this eventually will be part of his cutting birdsite loose from CA…
@zoeschiffer One step closer to this outcome
@zoeschiffer
Well the instability part would at least be in alignment with owner behavior.
@zoeschiffer I went from adamantly stating I wouldn't leave to leaving within a couple weeks when I realized this was going to be a slow motion train wreck and not a quick one. It's happening either way.
@zoeschiffer what could go wrong with that scenario??? 🤦‍♀️
@zoeschiffer well I don’t know for sure about Twitter but I submit that it would be hard for Elon Musk to get much more unstable
@zoeschiffer I've lost count of the number of ways Elon Musk has materially worsened Twitter this year so far. Starting to feel more like intention -- a sabotage plan -- not accident via incompetence. admittedly line can blur
@zoeschiffer I hope it’s somewhere in tornado ally 🥳
@zoeschiffer What, even more unstable than Elmo?
@zoeschiffer I think I best be downloading my data from the #bluebird

@zoeschiffer

I'm surprised that we haven't seen another peak in numbers signing up for the #Fediverse.

May be that will come when the closures occur.

@zoeschiffer my employer shut down our data center in Santa Clara but not because anything bad was happening, just was not cost effective compared to the likes of AWS and Google.

Much harder to scale up, moving to newer hardware was pretty much impossible,, reliability, etc.

@zoeschiffer Massive layoffs, refusing to pay rent, now this. Wonder what’s coming next? 🍿
@zoeschiffer Twitter users going to be seeing lots of this soon enough.
#failwhale

@zoeschiffer

That sounds like a Christmas to every teenage wanna-be hacker that always wanted to knock Twitter offline, but couldn't because the infrastructure was too strong.

Elon the genius.

@zoeschiffer Twitter getting onto more shaky ground? Starting to show potential signs of 'crumbling'?
