So, I'm finding out the hard way that if you start a new Mastodon server, nobody can find you.

This is a shameless request for some boosts so some of the bigger instances see me.

#mastodon #twittermigration #mastodonserver #findme #helpimtrappedinawell #imlonely

@jordankettner You just started yesterday. Rome was not built in a day and you have no posts. Follow hashtags, reply to others, follow others, post w/ #hastags. Once you start to engage with Mastodon you will find people.

#twittermigration #mastodontips

@jordankettner Engadge wit hothers. Do stuff. Boost begging isn't really gonna help you out.

I'm following you for hte time being, but that doens't mean you'll survvie the purges.

@jordankettner “🎶we’re sending out love down the well🎵”
@jordankettner adams is a libertarian in dem's clothing. Worst thing that NYC needed.
@jordankettner
Maybe try completing a fuller profile so people have a sense of who you are?
@Fascinatorfun @jordankettner That and more posts shared to the public view. There are many people with their own servers who find & connect with many people but not without a full profile & public posts.
@jordankettner Gotta follow lots of folks on other instances and interact with them.

@jordankettner
according to the doc there is a glue protocol (forget its name), it should be that you seed your existence into it and it does the rest.

if I send to @x@foo, my server has to ask "do I know who server foo is?"; how the glue maintains that in a table I don't know.

gun to head to guess, my server contacts foo via DNS (universal) and speaks the glue, and if it gets a response, there you go. so verify your 'glue speaking system' works.

@jordankettner

well shit, I could only have replied to you if my server did know you, so => what's da problem?

you wuz seen ... you iz seen.

@jordankettner thanks for talking about this process. I’ve recently been interested in how sharing and activity pub relays work with different instances, so this is a nice glimpse.
@jordankettner
What was your motivation for self-host? Nerd, security, longevity insurance, for the grins?
Did you do it flying mostly solo, or were there steps missing from public documentation?
@jordankettner the way i did it was i moved my account that i already had followers on to FORCE people to find me whether they like it or not
but yeah its just a downside of how federation works
nobodys gonna send posts to your server or vice versa without followers
@jordankettner May you can use Webfinger on your own domain to your advantage: https://fosstodon.org/@MattHodges@mastodon.social/109394247196306838
Matt Hodges (@[email protected])

Attached: 1 image [one way to share your identity] Okay this is so cool. I'm not hosting my own #mastodon instance — I'm still on mastodon.social — BUT you can now find me by searching [@]matt[@]matthodges.com (no square brackets). I followed this guide¹ by @[email protected] (h/t @d_run) to serve my #webfinger json² as a static file out of my domain. With one small addition³ I got #GitHub pages to play along. These open protocols rule. ¹ https://blog.maartenballiauw.be/post/2022/11/05/mastodon-own-donain-without-hosting-server.html ² https://webfinger.net/ ³ https://github.com/hodgesmr/hodgesmr.github.io/commit/d71a2912f6032a247f7514dfb30893c63030dd41

Mastodon
@jordankettner I've been there! Boost one of mine in return, please
@jordankettner look into adding some relays on your server--you’ll get a huge boost to your federated timeline, and posts from your instance will be sent out to all the other relay members!
@jordankettner nothing shameless about it. Done

@jordankettner

Honestly, I dont even know where i am !

Good luck,

Worst case : i've seen a migration option in the parameters

@jordankettner People will find you after you create public posts that include hashtags with your interests.

@jordankettner I'm not sure if it helps your case, but I have found this Chrome extension is helpful (for using Mastodon on a laptop browser).

FediAct:

FediAct

Simplifies interactions on other Mastodon instances than your own. Visit https://github.com/lartsch/FediAct for more.

@jordankettner I’m using a new one and I’m curious about your experience. Do you mean find in search?
@jordankettner yeah, lots of the pro-mastodon people were like "you can roll your own mastodon server, but probably shouldnt unless youve got a big following" (veronica explains video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqocW7DUFpg&t=480s
Why I'm not telling you to host your own Mastodon

YouTube
@jordankettner curious what made the decision to start your own server?
@jordankettner Welcome to the Federverse Wishing you the best with the new instance..
@jordankettner seems to me like the answer is having folks follow and post from it.
@jordankettner Boosted for the #helpimtrappedinawell tag. Don't worry, Timmy, Lassie is coming... :-)
@jordankettner you’re asking for a good reason. Happy to help.

@jordankettner I had some marginal success with relays; you might want to add these two on your setup. They're the only ones I've found to be functional.

@jordankettner You arent following enough people. In order to get your instance fully federated you need to follow & boost & get boosted.
My trick was to make accounts on a couple of the bigger instances that I had affinity with and mutually follow those accounts, then boost posts if relevant (SF posts for example). Has worked very well.

@jordankettner this is one of the downsides of the decentralization model, unfortunately

discoverability is low. yet another reason why congregation is inevitable!

good luck tho

@jordankettner I’m on my own server and I saw this post 😎❤️🦄
@jordankettner Have a reply and a b00st! Let's get that new server federating!!!
@jordankettner I don't have a big instance - actually a single user one! - but I do have a number of followers from them. I can boost and people will see it.
@jordankettner lol I typed this and then forgot to reshare. there

@jordankettner Have you tried #Introduction #Intro #Introductions to introduce yourself?

What is your instance going to focus on, besides reserving a username?

@jordankettner I would suggest that it isn't because if the instance. A better bio description might also help.
@jordankettner we've got a relay at fedi.artemai.art if you'd like a well managed relay for small instances, there's 21 of us there along with a matrix room for exchanging tips and info. Let me know if want more info!
@jordankettner they can, you should just move the account

@jordankettner just curious - what does having your own server (with your name) do/ what are the advantages?

e.g., is it one you want others to join (I'm guessing not, if it's your name) - ?

Just wanting to learn

@jordankettner Dont worry we are here to help and support.

BTW welcome to selfhosting. I am using @gotosocial for my self hosting needs. I also see you like #wordpress thats another interesting cross section for us.

My best wishes with your exploration.

@jordankettner Interesting. Thinking of setting up my own instance in the new year and hope to learn a few things from this thread. Good luck!
@jordankettner
The fact you know how to start a new server has impressed me, ha! That gets you a follow. Good luck!
@jordankettner very good. In was thinking the same.

@jordankettner #Failte

Hi from mastodon.ie home of the #Mastadaoine It looks cold out there! Come in warm up! Have a

@jordankettner Running a small site myself - 15 active users at the moment.

1: Import a blocklist to keep out fash. wandering.shop's list is good and is public. Do this _before_ step 2, because relays I've found don't moderate, they're relying on the sites they relay.

2: A few not-so-bad relays:

https://relay.fedi.agency/inbox
https://mastodon-relay.thedoodleproject.net/inbox
https://relay.intahnet.co.uk/inbox

3: Watch your Federated feed explode! Now you can find people to follow. Follow freely, don't be afraid to unfollow later. ^_^

@moira @jordankettner I also run a small community, 15 users so far.

Where do get a Blocklist and where do I import it?
