So, I'm finding out the hard way that if you start a new Mastodon server, nobody can find you.

This is a shameless request for some boosts so some of the bigger instances see me.

@jordankettner Running a small site myself - 15 active users at the moment.

1: Import a blocklist to keep out fash. wandering.shop's list is good and is public. Do this _before_ step 2, because relays I've found don't moderate, they're relying on the sites they relay.

2: A few not-so-bad relays:

https://relay.fedi.agency/inbox
https://mastodon-relay.thedoodleproject.net/inbox
https://relay.intahnet.co.uk/inbox

3: Watch your Federated feed explode! Now you can find people to follow. Follow freely, don't be afraid to unfollow later. ^_^

@moira @jordankettner I also run a small community, 15 users so far.

Where do get a Blocklist and where do I import it?

I've created a new Discord for Admins. Let me know if y'all would like to join. I set up a niche instance for my partner and I'm a noob! We could all help each other!

@SilentJoy @jordankettner wandering.shop maintains a good one and keeps it public.

Federation is under Preferences/Moderation, and you can Add New Domain Block one at a time. Suspend is a complete block, Silence still lets individual users follow someone at a defederated instance but keeps it invisible to everyone else. (Particularly in the Federated tab.)

In general, I go straight to Suspend, but I will use Silence in certain small occasions.
