Could reporters stop both-siding COVID and focus on why political leaders are failing us? Politicians aren’t reinstating mandates because masks remind us we are in a pandemic, and they are afraid that people will consume less if they see more people wearing masks. They are prioritizing corporate profits over public health.

Why mask mandates aren’t coming back even though covid is

Mask mandates are an effective tool against respiratory viruses. But health officials hesitate to reinstate them after years of political controversy.

@luckytran
I'm in Arkansas. We have among the lowest vax rates in the nation. My hospital, Dr. Office, etc. don't require or wear masks. At this point I think I have fallen into "let Darwin do his thing"

The rest of us just have to accept that 7Million people in this country voted for Trump. That means at least 5 Million of those are really stupid. You can't fix stupid.

@statmonkey @luckytran

The problem is that many of us actually need medical care sometimes.

If the doctors are all infecting people (and they've infected my partner, twice), we can't get any medical care.

It's bad to not have any medical care available at all, but here we are

@neroden @luckytran
It's insane, I feel for you. My flippant response aside I realize how hard it is for immune compromised people and those with lowered defense.

I do a lot of things for people who are in this situation and they are prisoners of these selfish morons. There's another wave here now, it's going to be ugly. Meanwhile you have people like Death Santis who are vaxxed but are more interested in power than the deaths caused by their lies.

@statmonkey @luckytran

Make that let 'evolution do its thing'.

Mr Darwin was one of the first to notice the phenomenon of evolution. (Wallace)

From now on the virus will co-evolve in tandem with humanity.

The virus is not very nice, but things could be a lot worse.

@antipode77 @luckytran

True. But if you are the one who has been trapped in your house the last two years because others could not be considerate enough to wear a mask and get a free shot, Covid seems bad enough.

@statmonkey @luckytran

Yes. It sure was a miserable time.

Knowing things could have been a lot worse is a paltry consolation.

@antipode77 @luckytran Yes and no. I mean, it's somewhat consoling but it's still bad here and honestly it's still going on. So it definitely could still be worse. I had an uncle who has been fighting cancer for 3 years. He's been sheltering in place. He went to the hospital two weeks ago and caught Covid in physical therapy from a nurse. It killed him. This is not over.
@luckytran
China is going the same way.
Masks are required again in Oakland city buildings

Masking is an effective way to prevent the spread of COVID and other respiratory viruses.

@luckytran
I'm very worried about what's happening in China and a new variant starting there.
@luckytran
Except in East Asia, where COVID counts are still relatively low, the rest of world wants folks to die for the yankee dollar.
The Anglosphere is particularly bad. Face it, the anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, convoyers, Trumpistas, kill everyone over 55 (except over-wealthy) have won

@luckytran To this Kevin character: Sure. That's why we've never bothered with covered sewers or food safety regs for restaurants or tuberculosis xrays for teachers.

At least get Corsi ventilation boxes and UVC lights, doofus.

@luckytran
But it's not ever true!
Who shall consume anything when they are sick? Who shall produce, transport, and sell the products? There are staff shortages everywhere. What the beep they are thinking where it ends?!
@JP30567 Exactly, it's very short sighted. Unfortunately, the way economics works is that there are numbers that they can use to claim the economy is strong now, while ignoring the disastrous long term effects of mass death and chronic illness.
@luckytran They will notice soon, but I'm afraid they will blame the lockdowns and masks and maybe even the vaccinations. 😕
@luckytran AMEN. We are being overrun again and its bad. On the Pediatric side there are almost ZERO ICU beds at any given time (at least in Northern California) SoCal is not in any better shape.
@luckytran I feel we are at a stage of awareness of the damage COVID is doing similar to that of smoking 50 years ago. It may take a decade or more and a huge burden of disease before we realize we have to change our behaviour. And these changes will need to be legislated, as smoking is now banned in most indoor public spaces.
@Captainobservant Agreed. The problem is that policies move slow and viruses move fast. We can't afford to wait otherwise so much harm will be done!
@luckytran Unfortunately, my own daughter believes that all of the viruses we're experiencing is because people had to wear masks. She believes that kids have to be exposed when they're young to build their immune system. While I somewhat believe that, I don't believe it applies now. But I'm not an expert.
@Nanakim While it's important to say what we are seeing with multiple viruses is complex and we need to learn more, blaming it on masks is very wrong. Surges in viruses are being seen in many countries which have had vastly different COVID policies, including those who never locked down. It's very possible that mass infection with COVID has harmed immune systems making more vulnerable.
@luckytran Not to mention that his idea of “community” is one with no vulnerable people (because since no one can know for sure whether the person they are interacting with is in a vulnerable category, the only way his idea works is if no vulnerable people exist in his world).
