Question of the Day: what's an opinion/take on a media thing you care about (#TV #movies #videogames #anime #manga #books #comics #music #sports #ttrpg, etc) that's pretty common among people not into it that bothers you a lot?

(it doesn't have to be on a specific property it can be just on the genre/hobby as a whole too, etc)

#questionoftheday

@ami_angelwings The eagles discourse re: Lord of the Rings. It’s so bad that it’s become a meme, so it’s now impossible to tell if someone is serious or not with it.
Other than that, the idea that Winston is the “dumb” Ghostbuster. He’s an expert mechanic, and frequently the only one with any common sense.
@ami_angelwings Lynch movies are "weird just to be weird," and that would be a bad thing for some reason.
@ami_angelwings Babylon 5 is a Star Trek rip-off.
@robinrenee @ami_angelwings - Especially given the growing (admittedly single (very trustworthy) source) evidence it was the other way around....
@dolari @ami_angelwings Apparently JMS went into some detail, with receipts, of how the Trek people did what they could to copy or sink B5 in his autobiography, which I still have to get.

@robinrenee @ami_angelwings - I have that biography and absolutely, he goes into detail about that.

It wasn't so much the DS9 production that was doing it (and in fact, many of the DS9 production folks and B5 production folks were friendly at the time), but was more Paramount's corporate folks doing it.

@dolari @ami_angelwings That figures.

@robinrenee @ami_angelwings - That book has some stuff in it. The Crusade cancellation was really WOW.

Basically TNT trying to get JMS to kill Crusade by asking for more and more ridiculous things until he finally did.

@dolari @ami_angelwings Wow, I’ll have to get the autobiography now. I hadn’t heard any backstory on what happened to Crusade, so I want to check that out. Thanks for the info.

* #Metal music is people senselessly screaming at a microphone while unskillfully bashing at instruments
* #7thSea 2e sucks (I can elaborate why I can understand and at the same time not share the sentiment)
* Being knowledgeable/having a background in #CompSci and/or #IT means you somehow are knowledgeable on and able to solve _any_ problem related to smartphones and computers.
@ami_angelwings hmmm... Maybe that "everyone with an anime girl icon is automatically a Nasty Person", of course I know that this stereotype exists for a reason, but there are so many LGBTQ anime fans, anime fans of color, and of course allies. Sometimes I have seen transphobes complain about being ganged up on by "anime avatars" and that makes me happy. A new (and much better) reputation!
@pikestaff @ami_angelwings
I just really love Sailor Moon. Nothing nasty. It caught me when I was a kid, surrounded by strong female family members. Seemed a natural bit of entertainment to me. I wouldn’t be caught dead with a Sailor Moon avatar for exactly this reason: the stereotype.
@thatnerddave @ami_angelwings my love for the character in my icon overrides the stereotype for me. I am a gay woman of color so I'm reclaiming the stereotype, lol.

@ami_angelwings that the english voice acting in ffx is bad

given the technical constraints they were under (e.g. all dialogue had to be at least as fast as the original japanese recordings or the engine would break) most of the actors do pretty great

like don't get me wrong there are some pretty bad line deliveries, like any time biran or yenke talk, but that scene of tidus intentionally being a dork to make yuna laugh isn't one of them

@ami_angelwings - I may have just answered with this (I honestly don't remember), but I'll repeat it...

::ahem::

KIRK DID NOT LIKE GREEN GIRLS PIKE LIKED GREEN GIRLS KIRK TRIED TO GET AWAY FROM EVERY GREEN GIRL HE GOT NEAR AND PIKE HAD FANTASIES ABOUT THEM.

::huff huff huff::

@ami_angelwings Sherlock Holmes is not an asshole, he's actually really nice to his clients.
@ami_angelwings Also, Leia is not actually smarter than Luke or Han, she's just stupid in different ways.
@ami_angelwings The idea that video games are harmful, and children need to be protected from their evils. 🧐 Gaming is SO good for us!
@ami_angelwings Comics are for kids is such an annoying cliche that still lingers on today
@ami_angelwings I'm certainly tired of hearing butthurt superhero movie fans saying that Scorsese only makes gangster movies.
@ami_angelwings As a fan of the film Soylent Green, there's this mythos that the film isn't worth watching knowing the "twist" and that the cannibalism is the shocking bit in film (we already know there's a black market human meat market the cops ignore) it's a secret in the film universe because the meat was being sourced by escalating murder of the elderly & the poor. Soylent Green being people explains the other violence.

@darksidecat @ami_angelwings

The original author, Harry Harrison, lowkey hated that the cannibalism was focused on for shock value and felt the true horror was the overpopulation.

@darksidecat @ami_angelwings - Spoilers can ruin a film, sure. But a lot of people forget that there's a STORY getting to the spoiler. That's important, too.

@ami_angelwings
#acupuncture is not science & doesn’t work/is a hoax/placebo only. Not true: acupuncture is the result of systematic observation, collation of data, and empirical testing by literate practitioners over 25 centuries in China. A growing body of modern Western research supports it.

#DnD 2e (aka #ADnD2e ) is confusing/difficult/overly crunchy. It was THE game for 13 years, and the systems and settings are fun and engaging even now.

I have others
 đŸ€”

@ami_angelwings Toho productions used high quality, painstakingly crafted miniature cities, and the common misconception Godzilla tramples cheap cardboard is freaking unfair!
@ami_angelwings RA Dickey sucked.
@PhilMoscovitch as in that's the thing you believe contrary to others, or that that's a mainstream opinion about him that's incorrect?
@ami_angelwings I realized I should have been clearer. I kept hearing that he sucked, and it very much irritated me. He would consistently give you in the neighbourhood of 200 innings (if I'm remembering correctly), most of them very solid.
@PhilMoscovitch oh yes, I think it was just that his debut with the Jays was so bad, and when he'd blow up he'd blow up hard, and he was an old slow throwing knuckleballer so people just remembered the bad moments to fit into their narrative

"isekai are anime"

I wrote an entire lit crit series about this including bits from Umberto Eco

Rich Puchalsky :anarchism: (@[email protected])

I was looking at my pinned intro post and the one category I haven't posted here yet is " literary criticism I guess?" So here it is, literary criticism I guess. An examination of the isekai genre via some amateur lit-crit tools and too many references to previous things I've written. #isekai #mediastudies #anime 1. Does it matter that tabletop RPGs encourage a folk belief in reincarnation and demiurgy? For isekai, it does: http://rpuchalsky.blogspot.com/2022/08/open-posts-closed-works-other-worlds.html 2.
