I started designing a physical dungeon crawl card game. Coming from the digital game world, making (and remaking) hundreds of cards is daunting. I've tried dozens of dungeon craw board/card games and none of the scratch my itch, so I'll make my own. I've never designed a physical game before, so I expect it to be awful and degrade into a version of 52-card pick-up.
@grumpygamer Trying things outside of one's wheelhouse is good - especially as it gives you fresh perspective for what *is* in the wheelhouse...

@grumpygamer

Single or multiplayer? I'd dig a good single-player physical dungeon crawl card game.

@grumpygamer I've literally started doing the same thing for myself recently for the same reason. Not even aiming to publish, just to have the thing that works the way I want.
@grumpygamer Have you tried any of the Clanks, and if so, in what ways did they fall short of scratching the itch you're after? Clank Legacy in particular feels like the current high water mark of the genre, to me.
@grumpygamer what software are you using for layout? I recently discovered nanDeck (https://www.nandeck.com/) but haven't tried it for a project yet. In the past I've used PageMaker (showin' my age) and InDesign, and most recently I've been happy with the results of using Flash for layouts because making movie clips with shared layout elements on the bottom layer and differences on upper layers works really well.

@grumpygamer Card Hunter started out as a physical prototype, and plenty of players asked us to do a physical version over the years, but ultimately having a computer handle all the rules and calculations was a far nicer experience than using our own noggins.

Anyway, I'm excited to see what you come up with! The best I've played recently was D&D Adventure Begins with Pokemon cards shuffled into the deck.

@Farbs "with Pokemon cards shuffled into the deck." - That makes any game better. I try that at next weeks poker night.

Re: I expect it to be awful

Nonetheless we all will buy it!

@grumpygamer i have instead an idea for a new type of multiplayer survival game based on Lovecraft stories, someone interested?
@grumpygamer One thing I've had to learn (going from video to board games) is, the nebulous term, 'fiddliness' and how it can make or break a game. How often is a player expected to recompute stats? How will players expect to maintain their own character's game state? What are the actual physical steps involved in, say, adding another floor to a dungeon? It's something I still struggle with.
@grumpygamer Best of luck. I imagine almost all your professional skills and work ethic are completely transferable to the physical game realm. I’ve often considered creating one too, so will be watching your journey with great interest.
@grumpygamer Because of some references you made, I thought you were about to release a dungeon crawler when you announced Return to Monkey Island. Probably best you did it this way round.
@grumpygamer I’m very excited to see this if you share it (no pressure!)
@grumpygamer I hope you will have fun making it :)
