—Electoral Count Act reforms to stop Trump’s next coup attempt

—Increased NLRB funding to fight union-busting

—Increased merger filing fees to fight corporate monopolies

The omnibus spending bill has many flaws, but it does include some critical provisions.

Keep up the fight.

Attempts by the GOP to include the extension of three Trump-era tax cuts for corporations and private equity companies were also defeated.

A low bar to clear, yes, but important nonetheless.

Now for the bad news:

As the military industrial complex continues to feast, the expansion of the Child Tax Credit that went into effect for 2021 was not included in the $1.7 trillion federal spending bill.

Endless money for war. No money for hungry kids or working families.

@rbreich capitalism at its finest - making certain those in need suffer the most.
@rbreich I don't have anything important to add, but I wanted to offer a sincere thanks for what you do and all that you have done.
@rbreich
Same as it ever was :(
@rbreich well see there’s method to their madness, hungry people want to eat, the military has food for them. That attitude became clear during the pandemic, workers need to be kept hungry to ensure they will do what the masters say. They actually said that part out loud. Remember we should all go back to work and sacrifice ourselves for the “economy”. Economy is just a euphemism for the oligarchs bank accounts. We have oligarchs here and we should be calling them that.
@rbreich You are a relentless advocate for everyday people. God bless.

@rbreich

Never money for programs that help those that need it. Maybe they'll just put needy people's names on missiles, bombs, planes, ships guns etc as an act of kindness! 🙄

@rbreich this NYT article captures much of what’s wrong about where we are. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/16/us/child-care-centers-private-equity.html
Can Child Care Be a Big Business? Private Equity Thinks So

Some high-end chains are surprisingly profitable, and they are trying to shape child care policy in Washington.

@rbreich what gives me hope are the GenZ. My student (interned at the Capitol last summer) wrote a terrific paper on how child care support needs to be reconceptualized to empower women and support children. ✊🏽
@rbreich So they want to get rid of abortion so people can have more children. But they don't want to give money to those families to help raise the children. Makes absolutely no sense.

@rbreich

You show us what you value when you show us what you're willing to pay for.

Too many US politicians value supporting & providing for war over supporting & providing for American children (or education, healthcare, science, the arts, etc...)

The question is: Do these politicians really value war/the military so highly? Or do they think they constituents do? Or are they afraid of what the military industrial complex will do to them if they limit govt funding?

@ZhiZhu

One thing to keep in mind is that different levels of government in the US have different functions and different jurisdictions.

In many cases even a sincere politician will push one cause instead of another because the one is under his jurisdiction while the other is not.

@rbreich Robert, no offense but your posts are generally bad news. Please, for the sake of followers such as myself, reserve this expression for prefacing something like “the bombs are in the air” or “Publix no longer has BOGOs.”
@rbreich I thought the goal was to keep them hungry and poor so they would join the military. Thus the circle is complete.
@rbreich Republicans do not care if people go hungry as long as they get their feast. The $1,000 dollar bottle of champagne, their maids, butlers, any type of food they wish to eat and the lavish lifestyles. These people are selfish human beings. To use Charles Dickens words, Scrooge said, if they have better die, then let them do it and decrease the surplus population. That’s the GOP.
@rbreich endless money to the big defense contractors that use it buy back their stocks and pay dividends to their major shareholders.

@rbreich

This is a little bit tone deaf given what's going on in Ukraine, don't you think?

@rbreich same as it ever was. Eisenhower warned us.
@rbreich based on what I have seen, half of the spending bill is for defense. However, there are provisions for increased pay for our military members.
@rbreich hegemony costs money .. it’s cheaper than a European wide war .. Blame republicans on short falls ..
