Everybody's gonna find their own way on here, but in case helpful to any other relative newcomers...

I had avoided using tools like Movetodon that let you easily follow all your Twitter follows, bc I wanted to start fresh.

But I was finding it a bit quiet, so today I used Movetodon and sorted the list to show the most recently active users at the top. I selectively followed about 100 of those, and now my Mastodon feed is much livelier. https://www.movetodon.org/

@willoremus Agree, I selectively picked folks from there to follow here (if I knew them, or if I knew by looking at their name who they were and why I followed). I'm good with restarting the feed here with mostly new people.

@willoremus nice recommendation. On the one hand, it's nice to start fresh and not be encumbered by the things I might not have liked about Twitter, but discovery also seems to be a challenge with Mastodon (so far).

@willoremus That's what I did, then found useful hashtags to identify interesting people, and may consider lists. If you want a break, try #NewMexico - and, good reminder, I should see where all the tech people here are, too. #scicomm

@willoremus You have to follow a wide range of people & also follow hashtags of interest or it can feel very quiet.

i would love to extol the virtues of movetodon.org/ and this amazing tool—i was able to capture a whole bunch of my follows. however it just flat stopped working right in the middle of a process. i've tried to reboot in several ways, but login button (Mastodon side) now dead—for me.

will try back later..

i am satisfied I gained at least some/most. and while working it could not have been easier or had a more simple UI 🙏​ @Tibor

I'm on web Chrome/MacBook. Dead links after trying to reboot, clearing cache, cookies, alternate browser, etc. 🙏​

@willoremus I just did the same, but I did not move all in bulk - I took it as a chance to clean house after a lot of years of follow spawl.

@joejerome the nice thing is there's no engagement algorithm to punish you for posting stuff here that gets zero faves. it's pretty freeing tbh.
