tired of the artists discourse. lemme try something a little different: air fryers are shit.
some of you have *enormous* kitchens and it shows 💅
tbh I do get your defensiveness, air fryer owners. I once shelled out £8 on a slightly fancy potato masher which was ultimately uncomfortable to hold and bad at mashing potatoes but I insisted on using it for years to justify the expense.
running a quick calculation based on the numbers here, if I were to invest in a low-end-of-mid-range air fryer (£120), I would need to eat 632 portions of oven chips in order to break even. at my rate of consuming oven chips, it would take me 158 years to start saving money (less flippantly, even if I were to use it daily it would take two years to start seeing savings) https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/oven-air-fryer-slow-cooker-or-hob-comparing-the-cheapest-ways-to-cook-a0kmu7Z7tBhJ
Oven, air fryer, slow cooker or hob? Comparing the cheapest ways to cook

Chips, cakes, chicken and more - we cooked several different food types using a variety of appliances to find the cheapest options

Which?
@stavvers I got myself a ninja 14 in 1 - it definitely saves money, but, and here's the big but which isn't talked about enough, I am cooking largely for one or two and I cook from scratch. So on a steam meal (for example) I can cook salmon, carbs and veg in 10 mins, costs about 15p. Pressure cooked soup or stews on a batch cook, about 10p. They don't teach u how to cook tho, and if u don't preserve, bake, and make soups etc loads of functions won't be economical
@stavvers I wanted to buy and air fryer but then I saw how small they were... lol wut.
@stavvers My husband just won one at a company Holiday party he didn’t attend because he had an appointment at the eye doctor. I have no idea what we are going to do with it. Anyone who wants one already has one!
@flyswatter charity shop! Someone will probably want it and it's good they don't have to shell out full price

@stavvers WTF kind of potato masher costs £8? *thinks*

Was is an Oxo one?

@barrowofdirt Joseph Joseph, who usually do good (but pricey) stuff; the masher is shit though
@stavvers I thought they were crap but got one as a random gift (I suspect a regift?) And it turned out I love it. But we don't have a convection oven (not super common when we bought our oven)
@nirak yeah, I think it makes a difference if you don't have a fan oven, but if you do, it's probably not worth it

@stavvers going from raw potato to french fries in 20 minutes just feels like magic to me still :D

I keep half hoping my oven will die but not really because that'll be $$$$

@stavvers @nirak oh so you guys ALREADY have convection ovens?
@stavvers Idk, mine takes up a lot of counter space I do not have, but on the other hand is functionally a microwave that can bake a camembert and cook 20 pigs in blankets in 15 minutes, so I’m torn
@andi the big question is can it do both of those at the same time, because an oven can in just five minutes longer
@stavvers It can! But also the oven was already *right there* so
@stavvers My kitchen can fit so much air in it
@stavvers yep, HUGE, about 40% of the total area of the downstairs of our house, and SO badly designed. 5 plug sockets total for the whole room, one of those is behind a fitted cupboard, yet this is how our washer and dryer are plugged in
@stavvers balls, forgot alt text: a messy kitchen with the washer and dryer (I’m doing alright for myself) power cables at full stretch to get to the two plug sockets on that side of the kitchen
@BethanyBlack oh my GOD that is so upsetting to look at. I've never met your landlord but I hate them with my life
@stavvers worst is we can’t even add an extension neatly tidy away the cable, because we need to unplug the dryer to plug in the toaster and balance it on the recycling bins. Also when they build the extension they built the foundation 2” higher on one side and the slope is directly under where the washing machine needs to go. Took me three days to level it properly.
@stavvers in the spirit of discourse, i disagree for reasons entirely relevant only to myself
@iyalei I passionately disagree with your disagreement and am defederating your entire server
@stavvers scandalous! I shall whip up controversy over this until people split into camps and argue about the specific minutiae of our disagreement in meta discourse.
@stavvers as a serious question, why are they?
@stavvers My son will often refuse to eat what the rest of us are having and insists on chips and fish fingers. The air fryer is invaluable.

@stavvers I think you mean "the shit"

*Traipses off to make brussels sprouts in the air fryer*

@stavvers now this is the #Discourse i log on for!
@ancient_catbus have you picked a side, Catbus? I'd *hate* to have to block and report you

@stavvers I am air fryer flexible, so I'll take the winning side here (yours)

Now if we were talking instant pots...i will fight and die for the honor of THE GREATEST KITCHEN GADGET OF ALL TIME

@ancient_catbus I very much understand the appeal of these for anyone with an electric hob but good stoneware casserole dish + gas hob is my jam
@ancient_catbus @stavvers I think it’s a tie between the Instant Pot and the Vacu-Sealer
@Porpentina2017 @ancient_catbus I have always wanted a vacu sealer
@stavvers @Porpentina2017 @ancient_catbus
Vacusealers are 🔥🏆👏🏼🙏🏼✅💖
@stavvers @ancient_catbus Oh my! They are absolutely critical to freeze for later “file-o-food” (as my husband calls it).
@Porpentina2017 @stavvers @ancient_catbus
I love how soon this app soon turns to Knowledge rather than Outrage.

@stavvers @Porpentina2017 I would love a sealer but I've maxxed storage capacity w my current gadget lineup (instant pot, toaster, microwave, molcajete, espresso machine, food processor, stand mixer)

I had to cut my cookbook library in half to reclaim two shelves for storage bc i haven't enough counter space 😭

@ancient_catbus @stavvers @Porpentina2017 A bit sheepishly I'll admit I'm on the "too much kitchen space" side of things. I don't have a dedicated air fryer, but my toaster oven fills that role. The toaster oven and coffee maker are the only things with permanent places. All the other gadgets are in constant flux.
@geekyonion @stavvers @Porpentina2017 I'd love a toaster oven for convince sake, but my stove has a good broiler so i can't justify it 😔
@ancient_catbus @stavvers @Porpentina2017 I got hooked on a toaster oven when I was living alone and just cooking a tray of tater tots and nuggets. With just me and my wife, it's been so much more efficient to use that than the full oven.
@geekyonion @stavvers @Porpentina2017 yah the oven is a pita for little things, i wish i had the space to justify a toaster oven
@stavvers @ancient_catbus now it depends on the type, if it has a rotary arm that tumbles the chips over, well those are the business, if it a static one, meh.
@stavvers Frying air seems real stupid to me.

@stavvers I have sympathy for this viewpoint.

The frying bit is a big Johnson-esq lie. I was told by the significant life partner that this would be as good as a deep fat fryer.

it’s not, just just a desktop fan oven.

What’s worse is everything comes out tasting salty, from the tears generated by this titanic deceit.

Cooks chicken nuggets quickly though.

@secretbatcave you ever tried shallow frying chicken nuggets in a pan? much crunchier.
@stavvers not yet, I’ll report back in about three hours
@stavvers @secretbatcave Shallow frying in a wok was a revelation when I tried it. Sort of almost semi-deep frying with a minimal amount of oil, and a lot of space to move things around. Chicken thighs especially.
@stavvers I have never used one, have a tiny kitchen, and think you are the Devil herslef
@stavvers How. dare. you. 😉
@smelltouchfeel I am grateful for a response like this, every other air fryer owner has basically responded with a kind of sheepish "well the food is less good bur hey I own one so I'm gonna use it"
@stavvers Ha yeah, no, not me. Don't really care about air fryers per se, but I'm a BIG fan of short cuts. I can have a hard boiled egg without having to get out a pan and boil water and clean everything after? Count me in. Also not a foodie, which probably helps.
@stavvers Does it make a frying noise? No? Not a fryer but a liar. I am standing fast on my opinion.
@stavvers I disagree because I'm lazy and don't want to preheat the oven.
@FrozenPizza THINK how many frozen pizzas you could get in the oven at once tho
@stavvers I don't understand the desire to take up valuable kitchen space with a small convection oven when I already have a normal convection oven
@mirahimage RIGHT???
@stavvers yeah, I'm already torn about getting a ride cooker even though I make rice probably 5x/week, simply because I already have a pan with a lid and can set a 17 minute timer
