Self promote. Show everyone your cool stuff. This isn’t Reddit. Don’t tell people not to show their cool shit.
@gamingonlinux Check my profile. I may start cartooning some more...
@gamingonlinux here's a picture I took of a deer:
@midwesterner @gamingonlinux nice shot composition :) were you trying for the rule of thirds for the head, or lucky? (Only heard about the rule recently. You know how things can get embedded without conscious understanding)
@fuzzysteve @gamingonlinux I use a stochastic approach to taking pictures: take lots of them and delete the bad ones 😂
@midwesterner @gamingonlinux digital cameras have made a huge difference there 😀 still remember hoarding my last shot on an old camera for the right moment. (I was young.) And that reminds me of a very good final statement in a film. "Lens cap" 😉
@midwesterner @gamingonlinux
whitetail? I'm not great at identifying fawns
@gamingonlinux Cool shit is cool. I mean don't be a @brands.town type but if you're actually doing cool stuff like @Cheeseness or @Mellifloss are ... We like your cool stuff. I *know* there's others here that we like too.
@gamingonlinux Looking at cool shit people made or have is entirely why I am here.
@gamingonlinux I've been seeing that sentiment all over the place. Was that a thing on twitter? That's one of the things that made Tumblr so rad, was all the cool artists promoting there stuff. Why would anyone not want that? Idu.
@Bodhioshea @gamingonlinux people could share art on Twitter, but some people over here don't seem to understand that artists/writers/creatives need to self-promote to live. They think people sharing their work and trying to build followers are a) advertising (not allowed on Mastadon), or b) attention-seeking. But sharing and promoting your work is essential to creatives, not the same as big brands, and gives us all cool shit to see.

@Rhube @gamingonlinux I agree. And don't want to come off as pejorative, I'm really trying to be descriptive, those notions about why you should not promoting your art sound really stupid to me. But idk. Maybe there's something I'm missing 🤔 like, what do people mean by "promoting." Are you just saying you want to post pictures of your work with a link that says "if you're interested, see more here?"

But I see how "advertising" could open pandoras box. How about this as a proposed moderation rule on advertising yourself: "No Capitalist Advertising." So, you got a nonprofit, mutual care need, it's a labor cooperative, or just you, go for it. Anyone who employs for profit, uses copyright or patent, rents or lends at interest can fuck right off? [This would be a perfect time to experiment with a poll, but I won't]

@Bodhioshea @gamingonlinux yeah, no, creatives actually need to profit to live, not just beg and ask for mutual aid.

I was responding to explain the situation, but I'm not going to enter a debate about it, for my mental health. I hope you understand.

@Rhube @gamingonlinux um yeah. Sorry. Wasn't trying to debate. Thought i was agreeing with you. Maybe i misunderstood? But no, profit isn't necessary to live. All you need to do is convert your focused effort on art into the same amount of money that you can use for food, shelter, etc. There is no need to profit and receive more than you put into a system. And, i want you to get paid. And, I also don't want you to have to pay for shelter, healthcare, or utilities. I'm on your side! Good luck and take care of yourself ❤️ You deserve peace and happiness.
@Bodhioshea @Rhube profit absolutely is necessary to live and to say otherwise is just so unbelievably naive to the way the world works
@gamingonlinux @Rhube I suppose it depends on what you mean by profit? Are we talking positive net invome?
@gamingonlinux @Rhube like, I'm being sincere. What is profit? Positive net income isn't a necessity. Breaking even is. Or, maybe not even that, because to an extent we can borrow and declare bankruptcy, if we're being practical and precise. But I don't want that. I want everyone to have an abundance. And I think in a very real practical way, we can do that now without acting like capitalists who use land enclosures to collect housing rents, regulator capture, "employing people or rents from copyright and patent. All these laws and paywalls seem a lot more naive and utopian to me than my assertion that profit isn't a requirement for life. If that were true, all the poor people would be dead.

@gamingonlinux lol, I jumped over here and immediately started posting my projects.

Everyone's going to see my cool shit, whether they like it or not! 😆

@gamingonlinux I wish I had some cool shit. I’d totally share that shit. Instead, I’ll just browse through your cool shit.
@gamingonlinux I ain't got no cool stuff.
@gamingonlinux I don't game anymore. I use my Linux to track satellites and solar weather :D
@gamingonlinux yeah, btw i'm only two followers away from 350 so please like and subscribe and smash that like button and leave a few comments and
@gamingonlinux Reddit = Mean-Spirited Gatekeepers and Lemmings. I regret every trip.
@mboezi same m, I generally only visit it to find news I miss and sparingly post on it now

@gamingonlinux

*Thank you.* Couldn't agree more.

I love the vibe in this place, and I'm all about people showing not only the cool stuff they have, but also their enthusiasm/love and their background history associated with that stuff.

@gamingonlinux I’m working on an interactive atlas of the world of Exandria from the #dungeonsanddragons actual-play stream #criticalrole and the #legendofvoxmachina. My maps are created using https://www.wonderdraft.net (available for Linux btw) and the atlas will be available as a module for the EncounterPlus virtual tabletop as well as a static PDF. I’m starting from scratch for version 3 and hosting the project on GitHub at https://github.com/MrFarland/Atlas-Exandria.
Wonderdraft

is an intuitive yet powerful fantasy map creation tool for 64-bit Windows 10, Linux, and MacOSX.

@gamingonlinux Ah, that's true. I lost track of how many times I couldn't show off on reddit because of "low effort post" rules
@trabex makes me a sad panda
@gamingonlinux Reddit, unfortunately, is an easy target for concern trolls and 4chan types
@gamingonlinux I'm working on a clock. It's going to have two clear disks with hands painted on them. They have gear teeth on the outer rim. They will ride inside a circular track, driven by two stepper motors controlled by a RPI Pico W with an NTP client and two stepper drivers.
@gamingonlinux follow everyone too. This isn’t Twitter.
If someone ever tells me not to show my cool shit, I am going to channel Glinda.

@gamingonlinux @Rjdlandscapes. Argh, this. All that Reddit’s inconsistently applied and maddening rule against “self-promotion” has accomplished is to turn nearly the entire site into a haven for semi-professional content thieves who, not coincidentally, are also mods

@gamingonlinux GW2 running on Mint going hard 6 months now.

I wanna quit my job and just ride the dopamine train to homelessness.

@gamingonlinux don't have much cool shit - yet.

I don't consider a Z600 with a 1050Ti to be cool...

@gamingonlinux alright, if you insist. Here's my latest entry on my personal film blog for "Robocop."

Robocop

Science fiction is an interesting genre for a great number of reasons, namely for the potential it allows for storytellers to invent new and exciting worlds. Sometimes, however, those storytellers don’t feel the need to ...

@gamingonlinux What's the difference to Reddit?
@fibonaccital Reddit and redditors generally hate self promotion and have rules against it
@gamingonlinux aha, have been on Reddit for many years but haven't experienced that.
@gamingonlinux i use vfio with qemu/libvirt/kvm. host is a 980ti running Gentoo, 3090 win10 passthrough.
@gamingonlinux here's my solar powered paddle boat charging by the dock
well here are some of my most recent artworks (more to come on my art alt @LeoJrTheTanooki)
@gamingonlinux I've never used Reddit extensively, do they really not allow self-promotion?
@OSCrane they have pretty hard rules on it and the term “blogspam” is used very often if anyone who runs a site like mine tries to take part and submit so I mostly gave up on it
@OSCrane @gamingonlinux it depends. Some subreddits have weekly "what are you working on" or "screenshot Saturday" threads specifically for people to post their projects. Most of the bigger subreddits have a self promotion rule, though, so they don't drown in a sea of "hey, look at my YouTube video!"
@gamingonlinux this gave me the motivation to post something I have otherwise not really shared outside of the relevant community

@gamingonlinux I've made a GZDopm mod called the monstrous weapons mod, and I'm working on a new version!
@gamingonlinux I'm literally on here to see cool shit?!? what else would I be doing here?!
@gamingonlinux We have a term where I work that fits - "confident, but humble"
