Oh, only -2F / -19C this week in Chicago. That’s a downright wimpy polar vortex. When I was young I had to walk uphill both ways to the liquor store in -20F.
@hacks4pancakes that's what I'm saying for Friday down here in St Louis.
@hacks4pancakes But at least on the way back you had liquor!
@hacks4pancakes Try minus -36C all week up here in SK, Canada 🥶 🤣
@hacks4pancakes I moved to Chicago the weekend of the polar vortex. Having to unload a uhaul in -50 weather was not fun! I love this city but I’m going to be a home body for the next month or two.
@hacks4pancakes I did literally walk to school in -25F once. I grew up in the Colorado mountains. They should have closed school that day due to the numerous dead batteries. I think about 40% of the school showed up.
@hacks4pancakes we had to make our own liquor at a still that was 32 miles away uphill both ways. Plus bears.
@noplasticshower @hacks4pancakes and then Granddad drank it all if you didn’t hide it well enough.
@Lee_in_Iowa @hacks4pancakes he could really suck it down since he lost all them teeth
@hacks4pancakes Ah, but what’s the wind chill? They’re talking wind chill of -30F/-34C in Indy.
I remember having to walk to and from school in fall winter with pouring rain and arriving soaked to and from school. I think it might help build character 🤷‍♂️
@hacks4pancakes Its all fun and games until your nostrils freeze together
@hacks4pancakes I remember getting frostbite once.
Iirc it was in early elementary school and it was cold enough to cancel recess in northern MN.
Good thing I had intact shoes that year.
@hacks4pancakes Wasn't that in a foot of snow?

@hacks4pancakes

Its the idea of wind chills hitting -55 that I am looking forward too

@hacks4pancakes At least the alcohol didn’t freeze.
@hacks4pancakes ha and can you believe they have heaters on the ‘L’ platforms? In my day you huddled for warmth with 5 random strangers and just hoped none of them was a Sox fan.
@hacks4pancakes with shoes that have holes in them, and no socks because you had to share them with your siblings...
@hacks4pancakes The walk back was kind of a haze, but that was the point.
@hacks4pancakes with the wind blowing from in front of you and from behind all at once 😁
@hacks4pancakes Heck, we're only supposed to get down into the teens here in mid-Michigan this week. Thanks, lake effect!
@hacks4pancakes oh, that's Saturday night. Here, at least. here, at least. The real cold is supposed to hit on Saturday.
@Splott poor Santa
@hacks4pancakes poor Santa! But I’m sure he’s dressed for it!
@hacks4pancakes Downtown was a bit chilly yesterday evening.
@hacks4pancakes Or stand on the El platform at 6am freezing your ass off, waiting to commute to the Loop
@wendynather @hacks4pancakes I used to bike to work in Chicago year round. I rode extra fast during the winter, because stopping meant death.
@hacks4pancakes come on down to St. Louis, we’re expecting wind chills of -30 later in the week
@hacks4pancakes Chicago late 1970s, radio announcer: "And the high for today is -13F".
@hacks4pancakes I was asked to apply for a job at Northwestern, way back when. But I’d been up there in winter and felt the Polar winds coming off the Lake. I stayed out here on the Prairie, where the icy winds have to get past the Dakotas first.
@hacks4pancakes You're welcome to join us lol
@NO53LF I mean at some point around -20 I can’t tell the difference
@hacks4pancakes Yea, that's very true, lol. Too numb to notice 🤣
@hacks4pancakes Malört is a great numbing agent it seems 😂
@hacks4pancakes When I was in high school, my family moved to the Chicago area on a day when it was -20F. It wasn't a huge shock since we were moving from Michigan, but still felt symbolic. Many years later, I now live in Los Angeles...
@hacks4pancakes the high here in mn is -1 😱🥶
