Epic Games to pay $520 million for privacy violations and unwanted charges

The FTC announced that Epic Games has agreed to pay $520 million, due to "violating children's privacy laws" and "tricking users into making unwanted charges".

@gamingonlinux nice. I just had them ask my birth date today in their launcher so gave them some bs date
@throAU @gamingonlinux I have essentially zero trust for Epic as a company since they were caught scanning your Windows Steam folder for content and friends information without your permission. If I remember right they said the information never left your device, but the fact they considered it acceptable to do in the first place and only admitted it after they were caught didn't really make me inclined to believe them.
@picard @gamingonlinux pretty much my thoughts also. Only reason I installed was to play wonderlands with a friend and the game isn’t that good so may as well deinstall it.
@gamingonlinux The next in the row should be a gog with their faulty practices and policies. Example: you can buy Witcher3 without any drm's, but to have some items/bonuses/extras that are part of this purchase you need to install additional software with drm's.- galaxy and such. But there is no info about this on the page. You can't read about it before buying. Instead the information is provided only by angry users after the purchase one the game forums or elsewhere online.

@gamingonlinux these are the same guys trying to get iOS to open up it's app restrictions "to benefit everyone"

(definitely not to make more profits from non-App Store IAPs)

@gamingonlinux They are only dinged for this because they are so big - hundreds of crappy phone apps are just as bad. But their store definitely is designed intentionally to separate parents wallets from their money.
@gamingonlinux Fortnite alone had $5.8 billion revenue in 2021, sadly a drop in a bucket, since it has been going on for years now.
@henrikpihl @gamingonlinux This. 👆🏼 Whilst it’s always a good thing to see a bad actor punished for ripping off consumers, even $520 million is just pocket change for #EpicGames … And we know from all the fines handed out to other big tech companies (#Facebook , #Google , #Microsoft , etc…) that it’s unlikely to change their behaviour.
@gamingonlinux Epic Games to pay epic fines. Come on! It's right there!
@TastyWheat @gamingonlinux #EpicGames make billions off #Fortnite alone… This is pocket change for them.
@gamingonlinux I really want epic games to be good. But they just keep doing stupid things since UE4. I used to think releasing a game on multiple platforms can't hurt, but now I think the epic games store should be avoided by developers and publishers.
@gamingonlinux But EPIC are the good guys who fight against big companies for the Users.
@cyberman67 @GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮 I absolutely enjoyed waiting a year longer for games which had been announced for Linux earlier but turned into an Epic exclusive overnight as a user ^^
@gamingonlinux They should have been fined more. This is way too low.
