Silly question, maybe, but... how do you DM on here?
@gwensnyder in a post click the little globe at the bottom and set to "mentioned people only". It's not quite the same as a DM, but close - if you @ mention someone (besides the intended recipient) they still get access to it
@joshuagrochow @gwensnyder Replies to such messages will have that same visibility - mentioned folks only - by default, so you can keep a running DM thread without fiddling with that setting when you reply.
@gwensnyder not a silly question! (I honestly just figured this out myself.) you type out your message starting with [at]username, just like you would to reply publicly, but you're going to click on the little earth at the bottom of your toot window. that lets you set the privacy to "only those mentioned can see it," turning it into a DM. any replies to the DM will automatically be DMs themselves.
@gwensnyder also, if you mention someone in the DM using their [at]username rather than just username, it adds them to the conversation so FYI.
@gwensnyder Not a silly question, it is less than obvious.
@trick @gwensnyder If I could vote on feature fixes, this would be it. It just seems wrong as it is currently implemented and prone to sending intended DM far and wide.
@gwensnyder "and that was how i ended up getting 3,175 DMS in one hour..."
@gwensnyder I think the answer is that you don't/use another platform if you really need them to be invisible to others. I found this explanation helpful https://raxx.la/notice/APLLdY8JsnqpUQKu8m

@meditativezebra @mmasnick It's because they're not *really* DMs. What they are are statuses with a privacy level set to "only those mentioned" (and mentioning causes a notification to show up). ...

@gwensnyder You need to change the post visibility direct or private, how it’s phrased depends on the client. The post will then only be visible to those users you @ mentioned
@gwensnyder In the timeline (not in a thread) click the little "..." at the bottom of the person's post and choose the option to DM the author.
@gwensnyder you can't really. All posts are public even "DMs". The mastodon interface will hide them but they are still public.
@gwensnyder just a heads-up, AFAIK DMs on mastodon aren’t e2e encrypted and the servers’ admins can read them.
@gwensnyder I don’t know the answer to this question but I have heard that DMs on here are not private, so if you do figure out how, keep that in mind ☺️
@gwensnyder btw depending on your instance, i believe the admin can see everything. see here for more https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18079

@gwensnyder It’s a poor, but secure, workaround: Use Signal for DMs.
@gwensnyder Select the @ ‘d person only privacy option. Anyone @ ed at any point in the convo will have visibility on that post, and the messages will all be visible to your instance admins.
@gwensnyder First you need to get a bunch of players together and have them roll up characters…

@gwensnyder I've not been fully able to figure it out.

It's why I'm looking into other methods for DMs.

@majorlinux
Can't speak for other clients but with FediLab.

1) Click on the profile pic
2) Click three dots in the top right
3) Select the first option to DM.

All the caveats though.
1) If you tag someone other than the recipient in the DM, that person will see your DM. It becomes a group DM.
2) Instance admins, if they choose, can see your messages

So if something truly private, don't use DMs in the Fediverse.

@gwensnyder

@gwensnyder Dropdown on the user profile

It is kinda weirdly buried, not sure if there's an easier way

@oceanity @gwensnyder If you reply to someone, there's a globe icon in the box you type in. Clicking that and setting it to "Mentioned People Only" will send it to their DMs.
I think...
@QueerBuccaneer @gwensnyder Yup, just tested with my other account and that does work, good to know!
