I'm looking for connections to any of the folks working to unionize tech workers. Hoping to find ways to learn and help drive it forward. Any introductions are welcome! Thank you.
Thank you to all the wonderful folks who boosted this! Really appreciate it.
@taliesan Tech worker here, and member of Prospect union.
@taliesan eager to connect and learn from people in this space. Our group in the Philippines is Computer Professionals' Union or CPU (https://cp-union.com/). Though we are not a labor union in specific workplace. We are organizing tech professionals and advocate for pro-people views around issues in privacy, mass surveillance, freedom of information, free and open source software, among others. *the union name was more of a wish / aspiration of the founders two decades ago to be part of unions under an entirely different ecosystem in the Philippines in the early 2000s. ICT professionals were then considered part of the management and were not allowed to join unions in their companies.
@gladys Awesome. I'll let you know if I learn anything helpful!
@taliesan If you haven't already, check out CWA! They have some free training resources, and can set you up with free consultation https://code-cwa.org/

@spilliams Thanks! I will. Are you involved? Appreciate your time. =)
@taliesan I’ve talked with them a little about my own workplace, and they were keen, but I got overworked and burned out so I can’t do as many extracurriculars (especially the social kind)

@taliesan I'm a tech worker, but in Academia, so joined AUT (now UCU) who represent tech workers at my level in Academia. We are woefully under-organised within my department though.

However I know Unite in Cambridge (UK) have an Engineering branch which covers some of the tech firms round here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064557589302

@taliesan there is a union focused mastodon instance
@taliesan Hi there, I am involved with a union who do training on exactly this, and have helped to organise tech workers before. Where are you based? (what country?)

@taliesan
I'm in the same camp.

This briefly recounts my failed attempt at drumming up interest in organizing and collective action amongst my ex-Netflix cohort:

Next for me is attending a CODE-CWA organizing workshop so that when I go back to doing tech work I'm ready to get the ball rolling.

I also think it's important to normalize #Union and #Organizing discussion on LinkedIn so I try and amplify and be vocal there.

@toolbear @taliesan
Telco layer 1/2 tech worker here.

Telcos unionized 60ish years ago. My telco IBEW local was founded in 1963.

We’re all in the same union. Call centers, outside plant, tech support, network engineers.

Stick together. Show solidarity.

@taliesan
There are a few of my fellow AWU-CWA sibs on Mastodon, although I don't know that any of us toot about our organizing that much. Tech organizing is definitely an uphill battle, but I find it mostly rewarding.
@taliesan IEBW or CWA would be my guess as a starting point. Good on you for doing this!
I am guessing you probably already know about the Tech Workers Coalition, but if not, here it is.

https://techworkerscoalition.org/
Tech Workers Coalition

A coalition of tech industry workers, labor organizers, community organizers, and friends cultivating solidarity among all workers in tech.

The Union Place: a federated server for union members, organizations, friends, and allies. If you support labor and labor rights, you have a place here!

@taliesan #australian here. I'm a scientist working in tech in a consultancy that caters mostly to the finance industry and government.

As far as I can tell, there isn't really a #union for me here. Maybe the #FinanceSectorUnion? But it's not really specific to the work I do, and there doesn't seem to be a union that is.

Following this thread with interest!
