I'm going to say this as nicely as I can:

A lot of the people yelling at marginalized people for "supporting fascism" because they're slow to leave hard-won community space on Twitter...

...are also people who never showed up for those marginalized communities when they were being targeted by fascists.

It's not a good look.

Marginalized people are very used to having to make "devil you know versus devil you don't" choices.

It's a caution based on lessons learned.

Sit down, be patient, and stay in your lane.

@gwensnyder We also have to calculate the lesser of the two evils on a consistent basis as well.

#blackmastodon
#blackfedi
#blacktwitter

@gwensnyder That’s a lot nicer than the way I said it to the last guy 😀
@gwensnyder I think no yelling should be involved but it is probably time to recreate these spaces elsewhere. How can this be supported by others?

@gwensnyder Yeah ... I really didn't want to leave because of the community I have there.

But if I didn't leave now, not only would losing that community become an eventuality, but all of my history and things I said would also be deleted, depriving everyone else of the work.

@gwensnyder The people who fascism has targeted fight fascism simply by continuing to exist. Doesn’t matter much where they do it.

@gwensnyder Yelling?! Wtaf? That's not remotely helpful. "Supporting fascism"? Talk about failing to understand how any of this works. I believe this place will be better in the long run about #Racism and #ableism. But it's sadly not there just yet.

(I hope it's not out of my lane to get infuriated about this; if so I'll delete it and try to do better.)

@gwensnyder Seeing a disconcerting amount of shaming for people staying and really the lack of compassion and understanding is what's shameful.
@gwensnyder all of this is why I swing wildly back and forth about my own Twitter use
@gwensnyder
Yep - just for starters, I have to wonder if those yellers understand how many Twitter support networks there are - mutual aid for trans & nonbi ppl, unhoused ppl, and so many more; specialized social networks for, say, BIPOC in academia, to creatives like, say, women in comedy sharing the names of men not to be trusted - and on and on.
These networks took years to grow organically. They won't be recreated on Masto overnight (if ever!). No amount of yelling changes that.
@RufusJCooter @gwensnyder I hope the spaces are re-created and quick. Thank you for the insight. I needed it.
@gwensnyder i’m very sorry to hear that anybody is doing that. I would encourage people not to link directly to Twitter, however. Every click puts money in Elon’s pocket.
@gwensnyder and I would love to know if there’s anything the rest of us can do to help
@gwensnyder Personally the only people I'm asking politely to stop using twitter are journalists who create a lot of content there and are actively helping maintain the narrative of normalcy. I also think government entities should step away from twitter, but I also know how important twitter is for so many marginalized communities, so all I can do is create a better place in here for them to come out of the bird site.
@gwensnyder I grew up black in South Africa! In the 80s and 90s.
I am a member of a marginalised group! Black woman with an African accent 😬😬 I get all sorts of attacks from fascists.
Anyway! My message to other marginalised people:
Leave Twitter as soon as you can. The whites who took part in or benefitted from apartheid always escalated. Musk will escalate. You are NOT SAFE THERE! Neither are we out here.

@gwensnyder Your post reminds me of a video I saw today. Obama talks about people being too judgmental and that getting in the way of being politically effective. I was glad to hear it because I am a fan of kindness and grace.

@gwensnyder And they’re still not showing up here. If I see one more nondisabled person report a disabled person’s medical fundraiser as spam…
