@jeffjarvis @mmasnick I myself have wondered "well, what happens when the first great content moderation war happens on Mastodon?" Because NO platform can be all things to all people.

But that's kind of the point; "John Mastodon" is a joke meme here precisely because Mastodon doesn't claim to have God Emperor Messiahs; it has thousands of individual instance mods who will just muddle through it and aren't making grandiose promises they can't keep about free speech.

Hopefully decentralized decision making will lead to a decent outcome, not fully balkanized but with groups of people talking to each other with varying degrees of openness depending on the nature of their disagreements. We handle this in other parts of our lives. Sort of like extended family at holiday time. Happy Holidays everybody!

@ad5nl @jeffjarvis @mmasnick That decentralization brings a remarkable resiliency. Even if all current servers are nuked, you could fire up a new machine (assuming someone has a copy of the software) and you're back in action like that (sort of).

The notion of downloading all your data and taking it anywhere reminds me a lot of the novel Walkaway by @pluralistic

@ad5nl @jeffjarvis @mmasnick ... and there have been moderation 'wars' already: so some instances get blocked from some other ones, and life goes on. Unhappy users can not only switch instances (cumbersome) but have accounts on multiple instances, making 'hard' censorship pretty much impossible. Protection from all sorts of awfulness OTOH is robustly available for anyone needing it - though no set of rules can substitute for just being kind.
