New statement from Sen. Ron Wyden: "Reporters are a big part of Twitter’s value. Elon Musk spent billions to buy this platform just to ban his critics who try to shed light on the truth. His childish actions are a fast track to Twitter becoming obsolete."
@drewharwell It would help if politicians cross-posted here or elsewhere (and news orgs too).
@Steve_Z @drewharwell agreed 💯 LFG politicians! let’s build this platform and ditch the birdsite.
@drewharwell nothing but respect for my senator
@drewharwell so when does Wyden open a Mastodon account? Only US Senator I've seen here so far has been @markwarner
@drewharwell #Capitalism at work! You’d think a CEO would know that. #journalism

@drewharwell

The direct news sources were one of the main reasons I joined Twitter.

If news is censored then less reason for me to be there!

@drewharwell Twitter is quickly becoming obsolete. Last night’s Elmo tantrum has only accelerated the exodus. We’ll soon be saying ‘Remember when we all used Twitter ..’
@drewharwell Twitter has much value, it has been a paragon of free speech (not hate speech) an that has been its value. To censor journalists, as part of a campaign to fuel some sort of egotistical control, is tiresome and goes against that value. It will, as you say, become obsolete, but maybe it is time? Maybe the fediverse has found it's moment?
@drewharwell We kind of knew that already, but it's nice to see it getting out there.
@drewharwell There are many people on Twitter that likely do not care about the lack of principles, transparency, and leaning in on free speech even if false and harmful. Twitter is all about eyeballs. Even if some of the posts are equivalent to yelling fire in theater falsely where someone is then trampled. Yelling fire is not illegal. It leading to harm can be.
@drewharwell Dear reporters (and suck up politicians) who think Twitter is vital. 6 years ago it wasn’t. Since then it’s been pretty toxic to most everyone, but all y’all in media built a cozy Twitter echo chamber around yourselves, to protect each other from Trump and mean subscribers, and you depend on it far too much. I’m glad this happened to tumble you all back into the real world.
@drewharwell notice he didn’t mention the 1st amendment because that’s not the issue. The issue is hypocrisy and power grabbing
@drewharwell "becoming"? thanks to his actions, the platform is already effectively useless as a source of news. unless a person is into QAnon or memes, it has little enough other use.
@drewharwell The twitter ship is slowly sinking. Just like the yacht in my header picture.
@drewharwell turning into truth social
@drewharwell 🙄oh yes just rely on market forces, that will work out
@drewharwell And the problem is? I am cheering on Musk because his toxicity is breaking the corporate stranglehold on social media. Twitter was always about enforcing the dominant narrative told by the wealthy.
@drewharwell this is my Senator and I’m damn proud of him every day.
@drewharwell that guy is a real one, I am proud to have been born in the state he represents.
@drewharwell Another MySpace bites the dust :)
