Right now focusing on difficulty, and where/why people abandon the signup process.

Just doing this as a fun exercise because I’m curious.

@mikehoff Perhaps ask if choosing a server instance was something they liked or if it was confusing or a roadblock. I contend that there should be a default server(s) that people can just sign up without thinking and then there could be a secondary choice to search for a different one if desired.

@mikehoff The two most challenging areas seem to be: understanding why instances exist; selecting an instance. It looks like joinmastodon.org has made progress on both fronts, but I would focus on how this can be further improved.

https://instances.social/ could also use some improvement... and it might be worth asking whether people even know it exists.

@mikehoff I made it through yesterday, I think the initial barrier to entry was the fact that you need to do your own research. There were many options to choose from, and that is the strength and weakness of this platform.
