I found "Movetodon" to be really simple to use and useful for finding the folks here that I was following in the Bad Place. https://www.movetodon.org/

@maxfawcett Probably start with the base of people who you follow on Twitter (they call it the euphemism, the "bird site" over here) using https://movetodon.org/ and https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ (useful for also capturing people on list you follow).
For new people to follow, you're on one of the very large instances which make the local timeline pretty useless. I'd look at what people people you follow are sharing and follow hashtags to see who are posting what.
@maxfawcett Specialty instances like https://mstdn.ca , https://mastodon.energy , or https://newsie.social have benefit that the local timelines are useful for finding Cdns, energy folks, or journalists. You can peruse local timelines + directories by visiting them directly; i.e., https://mastodon.energy/public/local + https://mastodon.energy/directory (filter for local users). If you find someone, you click Follow & it will give you a link to paste into the search back on your own instance.

You can start building your list of follows by using online tools that allow you to find people you’ve followed on Twitter who have Mastodon handles in their profiles. I used one called Debirdify, but there are a few available. https://debirdify.pruvisto.org/
