But posting this just gave him an excuse to do it immediately, without having to take a second hit later for changing the rules a second time to prohibit competitor advertising or something else stupid that makes him look bad.

I suspect that at some point he will make some splashy promise about stepping back...but by that time the people responsible for the day to day moderation are going to be so accustomed to enforcing his whims that everything will just keep rolling (but they will be fired in an instant if there is any negative attention drawn).
