Texas attorney general Ken Paxton has reportedly asked for a list of everyone who changed their sex on state documents in the past two years. Why? Paxton's office hasn't said. When asked for docs, they said none exist.

I'm sure it's no big deal. They just want a list of transgender people in Texas so they can send them milk and cookies.

Texas attorney general’s office sought state data on transgender Texans

The effort to obtain data came as Attorney General Ken Paxton, Gov. Greg Abbott and other Republican leaders have marshaled resources against transgender Texans.

@evacide He's the one who is under indictment, correct?
@blueteamgoon @evacide Seven years, and still awaiting trial on felony securities fraud charges.
@evacide There are regular complaints about German bureaucracy... inefficient, slow... no cross state/department comms... lots of paper... and people just miss that _this_ is actually the threat model that whole system was designed around. -.-'

@evacide Horrifying, but at least they're sticking to public info... for the moment...

Still NOT good.

@evacide How is this guy not in prison!!
@evacide and this is EXACTLY why we should not collect and save data on people.
@evacide Under no FUCKING CIRCUMSTANCES should anyone give them any information.
@evacide My state is a shitshow. One of the biggest crooks stays popular with the freak-show Christian Nationalists.
@evacide
Sounds like LGBTQ Texans have grounds for a lawsuit. Attorney Mark Zaid is who they want to call.

@evacide #Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton reportedly requested a list of everyone who changed their sex on state documents in the past two years. #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA #alphabetMafia #trans #transRights

Reported in the Washington Post (behind paywall)

@IpswichTriptych @evacide holy crap! The GOP is doubling down on ugly.
@evacide you couldn't pay me enough to live in Texas at this point. And, frankly, I wouldn't want to drive through it now, either. Flight stopover is probably OK, but also easily avoidable...
@evacide she needs to be out of office.
@evacide Does the US not have any data protection laws that would prohibit this data from being disclosed? In the UK/EU disseminating that kind of personal data would be unlawful.

@steve @evacide The US is a lot like the EU: 50 individual governments with one big body coordinating everything that goes in-between them.

So unfortunately, no. Governors are effectively Presidents in their states, right down to the use of their national guards.

@STEMtheBleeding @evacide In the EU, data protection law is set by the EU. Member states can't just opt-out.
@evacide Being stuck in Texas for now (and with my name and gender marker change pending in court) this worries me greatly.
@evacide probably gonna use it to eventually arrest them for being trans, I think Texas is becoming a threat to freedom and democracy in the US
@evacide I boosted the preceding post at first, and then I thought that it’s just the sort of content that I’d rather have seen hidden behind a content warning
@evacide this article is insanely disturbing
@evacide anyone who scoffs at the idea that we don't live in a state teetering on fascism is a jackass
@evacide the playbook would be to bring child abuse or endangerment charges against parents or medical providers. My fear is that they are looking for a winnable test case.l
@evacide Oh, a registry, those always end well. /s
@evacide @vmcintosh boosted. But I so want a boost + comment on this.
@evacide I’d like a list of all the people who have not been screwed by Ken Paxton. Want to guess which list is shorter and which list is none of our business?
@evacide really love to live in a place where the information i need to learn about the way the government wishes to kill me is behind a paywall
@evacide Ken Paxton is a corrupt bitch!
What are Texans thinking?
@evacide It boggles the mind that this man is still an elected individual and continues to be elected.
@sri @evacide This faith in 'voting will solve it' is going to get us killed.
@evacide
Someday I pray to understand why so much evil exists in public office. How in the world did these people get elected, are the people in Texas so morally bankrupt that want people who are different to be put in danger? None of this makes sense to me, it's 2022 for heavens sake, we should be past this.
@evacide what’s wrong with keeping track of all the mentally ill people?

@evacide I've said many times, organisations need to stop asking for sex / gender on their forms. In almost all cases, it's irrelevant to the services being offered. I used to work in library systems, and I saw no basis for the question, since all sexes get the same service.

My university, in an attempt to appear progressive, introduced an alternative X category in addition to M and F. But they should have simply stopped asking the question, since it has no relevance and is nobody's business.

@evacide and if any of Paxton's fellow travelers are smugly thinking this won't affect them, they should check their driver's licenses. Mine had me listed as F (I'm a cis M) for about ten years. I never even noticed it until a few years ago.

I wouldn't wish state persecution on anyone, but it gives me a cold little flicker of amusement to imagine one of Paxton's bigoted supporters finding himself the target of the Texas Department of Dirty Tricks because some DMV clerk hit the wrong key.

@evacide This sounds like how genocides get started, this is not good.
@evacide wouldn't be surprised if insurance companies found a way to exploit this.
@evacide This is beyond frightening. Fascist behavior.
@evacide that criminal is supported by the the governor. both deplorable.
@evacide Maybe the plan is to simply have transgender folks wear an armband to identify themselves in public. Republicans should be ashamed of the hate and discrimination they show towards those in the trans community and other LGBT citizens.
@evacide The scariest part is the fact that they lied about making such requests. This needs a federal investigation.
@evacide The US Census has been recording ethnicities for how long now? The government(s) here have *always* collected information specifically for the purpose of persecution.
@evacide It would be so nice if this felt surprising. I recently left Texas, after about a decade. Couldn't take it any more. Every time there was a glimmer of hope that the old guard would change, they'd vote these pieces of shit back in. If only that secession thing was real (it's not) and we could let that state become just an unfriendly neighboring country, the rest of us would be better off.
@evacide if this ain't dystopian as fuck I dunno what is
@evacide this has always been my biggest fear, and now that it is real and occurring, I need to step up as a queer elder. I’ve stood back in the shadows, whispering gently about policy for too long. Being a baby queer taught me so much opsec I never knew I had.
