How to tell which government is controlled by the automotive and fossil fuel industries

Passenger trains in US vs EU

@FolksVelo you make a good point. The current UK Government is desperate to destroy the railways
@FolksVelo Are you seriously saying that there are no passenger trains *at all* in the whole of Wyoming or South Dakota?
@mike drive, bus or fly seem to the be the only options
@FolksVelo Well, that is truly amazing. Especially as, in the popular imagination, when we think of railroads, it's always America that leaps to mind first.

@mike @FolksVelo yup, though it looks like you could take a bus into Wyoming, but not into South Dakota.

For Americans who can't fly (many due to physical disabilities), #Amtrak is the best option. Its service is pretty good, but it greatly limits where and when you can travel.

@johnlogic @mike last month my wife had a double ear infection so the Dr said no flying. We came home by train and it was the single best family time we've ever had. Amtrak may not be as nice as some of the EU trains but it was waaaaaay better than Jetblue

@FolksVelo @mike

The whole experience on Amtrak is better than with any airline.

By rail, I don't need to arrive ridiculously early nor go through invasive (and ineffective) "security" screening.

And I say that even after once waiting an extra hour for a late outbound train.

@johnlogic @mike @FolksVelo You bring up a good point. As most Amtrak Thruway connecting buses are operated by Greyhound, it seems we should have Amtrak and Greyhound harmonized work together in a national intercity ground transportation plan. #rail #bus #intercity #Amtrak
@FolksVelo yet surface transport in Europe is dominated by cars as well. E.g. in Germany the passenger railway network has been shrinking in extent since long and we are spending much more for broader, upgraded or new streets than for railways. Many regions have a non-electrified single-line railway with totally outdated technology, but new, 4-lane highways next to them.

@FolksVelo I'd argue though that government like e.g. Germany are very much influenced by automotive and fossil fuel industries :-)

e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/sep/24/uk-france-and-germany-lobbied-for-flawed-car-emissions-tests-documents-reveal

UK, France and Germany lobbied for flawed car emissions tests, documents reveal

Countries publicly calling for investigations into VW emissions rigging scandal have privately fought to keep loopholes in car tests for carbon emissions
