I need help. I've been trying to find and follow Black People in the sciences, history, politics, education, and other specialties.

I've failed miserably.

Can Mastodonians point me to (for starters) Black People in epidemiology and virology? Thank you!

#BlackMastodon
#epidemiology
#virology

@zhivi @ZekeMD @onlymeindc do you have any leads? πŸ₯°
@Freedom2B
@MasonBee @zhivi @ZekeMD @Freedom2B I boosted, but I'm not a scholar in that field or an admin at a university with medical and biomedical fields and new here too so I can't help like I wish I could.

@MasonBee @zhivi @onlymeindc @Freedom2B

Thanks for including me! And not that I'm an expert, but hopefully this helps!! ✊🏾

I wish Whitney Robinson was here to represent #BlackEpi (if that ain't a hashtag, it should be).

Not sure about virology specifically but #BlackMastodon will definitely give you some ideas!

For "science" more broadly, here's some folx I like: (#BlackScience ?)

@drcaberry
@cclareMDMPH
@shengokai @onlymeindc
@timnitGebru @Alikufogo @dtgeek

@Freedom2B #EpiVerse used by a lot of folks in epidemiology
@Freedom2B Try to find some in https://fedi.bihlink.com Better way is to use search or even browse by hastags https://fedi.bihlink.com/tags/cloud (use filters!)

@Freedom2B
Today on my server, (in a web browser), I clicked on the hashtag you used: #BlackMastodon . It brought up a page of people using that tag, and then I "followed" the tag. I hope you can do a similar thng from your account. Followng hastags is pretty new in Mastodon. #Mastodon #BlackFedi #BlackLivesMatter #BlackHistory #Black
@outer @Freedom2B Neat! I didn’t know about following hashtags. Now to find how to find the result list
@outer @Freedom2B Clue- I need to be in a web browser?
@Freedom2B no one specific comes to mind but @socrates boosts introductions from people on scholar.social which is a) a bunch of scholars and b) from what I've heard, one of the safer instances to be Black
so I wouldn't be surprised if there were Black epidemiologists or virologists on there
@Freedom2B I wonder if @drcaberry can help you with your search…
@Freedom2B Not epidemiology but @mekkaokereke is in tech, a good follow, & boosts other Black voices.
@Freedom2B it would be easy if they used hashtags. You can try this hashtag #BlackAcademics

@Freedom2B
I am not positive of anyone but keep posting that message & ask the general public to boost it...2-3-4 times a day & you will get connected!!
@Freedom2B @professorcrunk literally started following her myself
@Freedom2B tangentially related: Raychelle Burks is a forensic chemist. There are several places to follow her work, but I don’t think Mastodon is one of them yet.

@Freedom2B I used this to find some of my twitter people on mastodon. It worked quite well. I found it through another mastodon user's recommendation: https://www.movetodon.org/
Movetodon: Finds your Twitter Friends on Mastodon

@Freedom2B Shoot this query @BlackMastodon - you should find some leads there
@Freedom2B I was told that @ ing people without their permission is not good etiquette here, but I did boost so my followers have a chance to reach out or to boost your request to *their* followers.

@Freedom2B I haven't found her on Mastodon yet, but Chelsey Spriggs (@[email protected]) from University of Michigan is wonderful.

It would be lovely to have her here on ecoevo.social, so I'll shoot her an invitation.

@Freedom2B a thank you for this conversation. I am not a scientist, just enjoy listening to them

@Freedom2B There is a mastodon server called blacktwitter.io

I only know of it because I followed someone who moved from the birdsite, but it seems like it might be worth checking
