shout out to everybody who bought a Tesla to save on gas or show off or whatever and is now trying to figure out what to do with the fact that they’re driving around in a $45,000 MAGA hat
@dansolomon I was thinking the same for the guy in a Tesla in front of me last night. Sad.
@dansolomon often a $70K or more MAGA hat.
@dansolomon I bought one because I wanted an electric vehicle with good range. That was a few years ago before Elon showed his true colors. It's still a great car, but that's because of everyone else that worked on it.
@Relayer Elon is a mess, but I just ordered my 3rd Tesla because they are the best BEV available today. (Not perfect of course)
@dansolomon Rip the chrome off it maybe?
@dansolomon As a long-term road bicyclist, I've learned to correlate the type of vehicle with the probability of misbehaviour. A big pickup with or without commercial markings? A late-model BMW? They are going to come closer than necessary and (particularly in the case of the pickup) they aren't going to signal. Tesla drivers are firmly in the BMW camp - demonstrated personality problems acted out in unsafe driving behavior. They generally aren't signalling eco-consciousness, they are signalling privilege. Take from that what you will about the future of the market for Teslas, but I think it will thrive.
@rose to be fair the tesla could be driving too close because the owner is using the self-driving mode and it doesn't recognize that you exist
@rose @dansolomon that’s disappointing! I’m sorry that’s been your experience. We are a road biking family who (sadly now) also owns a Tesla. We always respect the cyclists! Bummed this car has so much stigma now.
@kk I still drive a petrol-burner! The tendency to link our identities with the brands we have chosen is also a choice we make. Just choose not to?
@rose deal. I’ll be extra kind to cyclists though!
@rose @dansolomon I recently started riding an ebike a fair amount and I would say probably 90% of the times I've almost been hit it's been a Tesla

@rose @dansolomon
The car talk guys used to say something similar about Jetta owners pretending they were driving BMW's.

I wonder what Ray and Tom would say about today's Tesla. I bet they (Tesla owners) pass on the right a lot

@rose @dansolomon I've noticed this too, even though I'm not on a bicycle. Around Austin I've also noticed Teslas with no visible license plate, trying to cosplay Steve Jobs.
@lpar @dansolomon Need code to run on my rear-facing camera to warm me when a Tesla, BMW, or pickup is approaching.
@dansolomon There's surely a nonzero number of people who sold their Prius and bought a Tesla in protest of Toyota supporting Trump's rollback of emissions standards
@dansolomon I’m in this toot and I DON’T FUCKIN LIKE IT.

@dansolomon

Honestly, even as someone who despises Musk at this point, my inclination is to judge Tesla owners *slightly* for having a dumb car with weird design choices (a convenient handle on the inside that opens the door, but damages the windowframe, because you should've pushed a button or something!), but generally...EVs are good and I'm happy to see more of them?

I see a brand new Tesla, I'm happy to regard it as such at this point.

@dansolomon I almost look forward to answering questions about the Matchbox Teslas on my desk with the epic tale of the Extremely Divorced Man in a couple of decades' time
@dansolomon may or may not have contributed to why I sold mine LMAO 💀
@dansolomon I get mad at them when I see them on road. reflexively if they drive poorly.

@dansolomon musk has turned #tesla into mypillow

How long before shareholders cut & run? How long before #musk is ousted from the board?

@dansolomon as embarrassing as it is the fact that I love my car helps soften the blow . . . also 45k? maybe used!
@dansolomon meh. I don't have one, but would've bought one if my current car had died prematurely. Because the Tesla cars are built on great technology from www.acpropulsion.com, and Tesla's investment has put practical EVs on everyone's radar. None of that has anything to do with Musk.
@dansolomon ugh. This is me. Luckily it’s leased and will not be replacing with another Tesla! I’m the meantime, I needa find a bumper sticker or something to indicate I’m not team #spacekaren

@dansolomon
Surely real maggots would gladly pay $45,000 to finally own a MAGA hat made in the USA?

(I gather Tesla's bought in the USA are usually made there)

@dansolomon
If you have one sell it while the battery has good range.
@dansolomon LOL. Tesla really has become another word for MAGA...
@dansolomon I remember that whenever I would see a pickup truck with a Trump sign on it, I would say that was a MAGA. Now, whenever I see someone with a tesla, they may as well have a MAGA logo on it...
@dansolomon I think I'll start calling Tesla's the "MAGA Wagen" in German.😆 #tesla #teslafundshate
@dansolomon That would be us.
Bought a used P90D.
Before we knew Musk was such a jerk.
For the planet & all that.
Oh well….
@dansolomon To be honest I’ve struggled separating the CEO from the Tesla vehicles and mission statement, but I succeed by reminding myself that Tesla is more than their CEO. The vehicles, batteries & solar are designed, manufactured & delivered by thousands of people, the majority of who (in the USA) support & vote independent & democrat, or for Berlin & Shanghai have no connection to USA politics or their CEO’s disturbing behaviour. #Tesla
@dansolomon that's funny. MAGA supporters wouldn't be caught dead in an electric car.
@dansolomon Show your support or lack of support with your wallet. Dump Tesla now!
@dansolomon just imagine what people still at bird will face soon if maga populist will create system where You can speak but not reach. It would make them usefull idiots talking when something important will happen. He will spam most important ideas with spam strategy. Very dangerous for free speach around the World
@dansolomon and if they wanted to fix it cheaply theyre also under a NDA
@dansolomon Don't worry, their car will burst into flames in due time. And the doors will be auto-locked.
@dansolomon Well, Tesla buyers mostly are woke libs. something that apparently never occurred to Galaxy Brain Elon.
@dansolomon
@paprikapink
Our next car will probably be electric, but it sure as heck will not be a Tesla.
@dansolomon According to https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-approval-rating-negative-territory-survey/ more people disapprove of Tesla's than approve. I wonder how much that has cost Musk on top of cost of destroying Twitter.
Tesla approval rating dips into negative territory: survey

Musk's polarizing political leanings have become apparent following his turbulent takeover of social media company Twitter.

TESLARATI

@dansolomon @aeva Sell it to someone who loves that stuff. It’s a win win win.

They now drive electric.

They bought used instead of new.

And the seller can now buy something else than an Elmowagen.

@dansolomon I saw a sticker on a Tesla last week that said something like "For the earth. Not for Elon." in a circle. (Austin, Texas)
@dansolomon
I don't know if Fisker marketing pays attention to social media, but an aggressive trade-in program would be a natural tie in to the Ocean or Pear sales program

@dansolomon I have zero love for Musk. He's a big baby who just needs to be knocked down a peg or 100 billion.

But I do love my Tesla. It's the best car I've ever owned by far. And I've had no problems with it. So far I've spent just about $200 on it for maintenance since I bought it in 2019. And we're installing solar panels next year (not Tesla) so it'll eventually be powered by the sun.

And you can call me one of those woke libs if you like. Woke is not a bad word in my world.

@dansolomon cuts-too-close-to-the-bone my man... cuts-too-close!!!

Refused to buy a VW lineage car because of Dieselgate back then, and here we are now!!! Maybe have a "fux Melon" bumper sticker will do the job? Ah wait, servicing... crap... 4.5 more years of warranty... oh well one can hope he would have sold all his shares and gotten kicked out of the board!!!

@dansolomon you own my cousin, he is feeling that in a big way 😒
@dansolomon Maybe don't make everything about tribal affiliation. The product can be good (or not) on its own merits, regardless of the current political leanings of the company founder.
@matt @dansolomon is it good though? my friend has one and when it rains it also rains INSIDE.

@dansolomon In like 2013 I remember telling people about these cool new electric cars that I was really excited about

and now a decade later, i just froth at the mouth ranting about how car-centric infrastructure is ruining modern life

@dansolomon to be fair, there are many who bought one because it’s the only viable option for a good EV a few years ago, and it simply isn’t a good financial decision right now to change cars just purely based on how shitty of a person the CEO became. Also applies to people still choosing to work in Tesla/SpaceX/Twitter/etc. Not everyone can afford to just quit or something without a job lined up. It’s easy for bystanders to talk shit but people don’t always have a choice.

@dansolomon

I give them the benefit of the doubt if the car is 20221 or older.

@dansolomon my town has more Teslas than you can count (we are a big space force city) and what I’m wondering is - what if tesla really collapses completely - what are they going to do with these expensive gadgets? No warranty coverage, etc….
@dansolomon all the people I know paid 70 grand plus
