@erraggy yes. though, at least for me it's been growing pretty quickly.
But after seeing multiple friends brigaded and attacked by complete fucking morons, it seemed like something worth doing.
If the press leave "the other side", then I think it will just be parler or discord groups. like minded communities, but not igniting trends that are then amplified by the press, thus soliciting more flamethrowers.
I wonder if the press can go back to reporting the old ways, or find new ways.
What I hope for is a broader range of topics handled by the press and society-- this way we can solve problems in parallel.
I can hope.
@brewsterkahle @mmasnick Very literally, I see members of the press deliberating between Mastodon's journalist-oriented instances and PostNews.
One has the familiar VC backing and a promise of tie-ins with advertisers and publishers, the other offers (potential) moderation and audience. I suspect the feature set of Mastodon wins, if their employers make the slightest efforts to use them.

You're referring to this thread?
https://www.upworthy.com/bartender-explains-why-he-swiftly-kicks-nazis-out-of-his-punk-bar-even-if-theyre-not-bothering-anyone
What Michael B. Tager didn't realise was that the zero tolerance approach to Nazis would rile up a "free speech absolutist" billionaire into buying the bar, firing all the staff, then go on to accuse the previous management of being a pedo
I signed up for the Spoutible.com pre-beta and will lock my Twitter account as soon as I get onto Spoutible and can confirm that it works.
I won't do Post, not after seeing how they intend to use their Posters. I like Mastodon, but I feel like I'm imposing on the server owners. Spoutible looks like it's going to be everything that Twitter should have been from the start.
if not for a functional need to keep that channel open there would be no traffic to that fowl site from any of my devices

@mmasnick
Just leave the Birdsite
Why keep giving Musk free content, user info and real people to sell to advertizers?
@mmasnick
Sure. Happy to hear your reasons, if you care to share.
But at a macro level, I am proud to highlight how the bird site is unsafe. Each day there provides:
- free content for Musk
- cover for his disinfo
- justification to advertisers
- another chance to radicalise you
So please don’t jump on me for pointing out the dangers and asking you to stop feeding the hate-for-profit machine. I do it from a place of caring.
@mmasnick I've been on private for 3 weeks, the longest ever since I joined in 2009. I've only posted a handful of anti-Musk RTs.
The only reason I'm reluctant to delete is lots of useful research threads I'd want to put on WayBack first.
@mmasnick
P.S. Justine Musk (his ex) just posted this article on Twitter along with this Tweet.
"Many things contribute to lack of empathy, including + especially the belief that 'empathy' is for sissies, snowflakes, + people who watch Oprah.
Empathy is not a fucking weakness."
