If you want to know why #creators are still on #birdsite even knowing it’s a cesspool, ask Willie Sutton, the bank robber. When asked why he robbed banks, he replied “That’s where the money is.” Money aside, if you are a journalist or activist or academic or NASA trying to get a message out, birdsite is still where the eyeballs are. Let’s keep growing the Fediverse and they’ll come. It may take a while.
@dgoldsmith This👆I’m wondering if after Christmas more might come. #Art #Twitter
@dgoldsmith I'm not so certain that even the eyeballs are there. When I look at view stats of my tweets, they're really low. That doesn't bother me (I'm not well known, don't have lots of followers) but it does mean it's really easy for me to step away and tweet only once or twice a week. Its not worth it, for me.
@vera I’m thinking more of accounts like NASA or Greta Thunberg. They still have huge followings. Even medium-size accounts are still getting the audience they’re trying to get a message to. I’ve seen several accounts I follow there try posting here, then give up after a short while because not enough people are listening to make it worth their time. Sad, and I hope it’s temporary.
@dgoldsmith When Twitter user DMs are released, lots of journalists will run.
@dgoldsmith @kitoconnell I am there…as a lurker, documenting…but cannot post. I don’t post on hate sites. https://nadinbrzezinski.medium.com/twitter-continues-to-turn-to-the-far-right-91e40795657b
Twitter Continues to Turn to the Far Right - Nadin Brzezinski - Medium

With the return of Andrew Anglin, a well-known white supremacist, the turn towards a hate platform continues. Twitter is no longer a safe space for many people from marginalized communities. It’s not…

Medium
@dgoldsmith Not only is it going to take a while, but we need to push the #Fediverse more. Someone with many resources needs to advertise this platform, and we need to make it more enticing to the average person.
@Ertain Better apps will help. I have high hopes for the upcoming batch of new apps.

@dgoldsmith
Easier self instance hosting is key here. Many people may want to move to the fediverse but be reluctant to join an instant owned by some other party.

@Ertain

@dgoldsmith That’s why I posted earlier that journalists are still on Twitter for the same reason you find them in war zones.
@dgoldsmith I think it's more like missionary work at this point. They're trying to convert the post-factual universe back to reality. Magical business plan, that.
@aka_quant_noir Not the ones I still follow. They are totally aware of what’s going on but still hope to reach their followers who are still there.
@dgoldsmith Well I hope they adjust their business model. And I hope they find the eyeballs they're looking for aren't where they thought they were.
@aka_quant_noir Greta Thunberg and NASA many others don’t have a business model. They believe they need to be on birdsite to reach the most people.

@dgoldsmith

I've hit a hardline with this. I'm so furious they're all still there. Not the audience, the journalists. The "resistors", pundits, all the ones who HAVE audiences. I rage against the machine, not the workforce and i'm so furious at the machine. They're there literally being part of the reach of that filthy site. There are people right now freezing, starving, dying in a stand against fascism. All these... *gnaws tongue to refrain from expletives* cowards have to do is not TWEET

@dgoldsmith I want to see the White House, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama here.
@robinbrenizer Me too, but there are 2M people here vs. 100x that on birdsite.
@dgoldsmith I get it. That’s why 100x are there. The biggest political shakers and movers need to at least trust someone with a server to open another account here. Maybe Hillary’s server. I’d join that instance. @Hillarys.server 😂
@dgoldsmith Yeah, that's why I am still there for awhile at least. I have a debut novel coming out in a few months and a second academic monograph as well. My publisher says I need to promote them. Going to where the social media followings are is, sadly, part of the job.
@dgoldsmith I'm a creator but I'm gonna shift my attention to Mastodon (and Tumblr) starting in the new year. I will probably keep my Twitter account but I don't think I'll use it for anything other than posting links to my stuff.
@dgoldsmith i crosspost there with links back here.
@dgoldsmith not arguing, but this is so, so ironic, considering twitter no longer is paying *their* bills, very publicly.
